Just to confirm: I'm using following setup

  http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.centos.devel/8190

with 256MB RAM and a "yum update" consumed all memory 
and finally the process was killed. It was possible 
to do it selectively but at least for "yum update glibc" 
the execution led to an unresponsive yum.
