Remote Installation

I "upgraded" a server from RH9 to CentOS remotely, as from WBEL 3.0 to CentOS 3.0, and a RH8 to CentOS 3.0.. Used YUM to do it.. HOWEVER, it was (basically) Redhat - > Redhat (based) upgrade. I have no idea how well it would work to do a Deb box that way. Maybe build a local box (or VMWare image, that way you can use the Snapshot to recover screwups), with Deb on it and try the "upgrade" .. See if it bombs out.

CentOS Remote Installation ?

Hi. Is there a way to install centos over my actually debian or suse server like an autoinstaller script or rsync or nfs? I have no local access to the server so that the installation must be done over remote. If yes can anyone provide an faq or HowTo for a way to update my server to centos. Thanks Sven S.

Nico, I'm studying for RHCE, the book I'm using says linuxconf is more or less deprecated. There's a bunch of other gui tools, however, that you can use instead. Exciting news about cAos & CentOS - Please read

I have the great pleasure to announce that the cAos Foundation has been given the right to an exhibitor booth at the upcoming LinuxWorld Expo in Boston, Massachusetts from February 15th - 17th. (More info here: http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/live/12/events/12BOS05A). This is a awesome opportunity to further cAos and CentOS linux. But I do not feel that we should give 1/2 an effort. I feel that we need to make a big impression. The biggest thing I am looking for is volunteers that can help me make this a large success. Just because you cannot attend also does not mean you cannot help, there are numerous ways to. Through my employer I'm trying to acquire a Exhibit Kiosk and some computers and servers for demo purposes. But there are lots of other things that I feel we need to succeed(but feel free to comment if you think of something else) Items needed: Volunteers for working in booth cAos Foundation, cAos Linux & CentOS banners & signs Marketing flyers for cAos Foundation, cAos Linux & CentOS CD's for cAos & CentOS If you have any interest in helping or have any ideas to make this a success, please contact me. What if this happens?

Does anyone have concern about this? What if Redhat stops giving SRPMS for new releases and updates in public? If you buy a subscription to RHEL AS and they have to give you the SRPMS because of GPL agreement can that person provide those SRPMS to public again because of GPL? They claim they are premium OpenSource company but they are still a company and for them money is bottom line. There is no need to change the package names that redhat have chosen to give to the linux community. (In rhel4 redhat-config -> system-config - and also a lot of work has been done by Fedora removing the word redhat where it is uneccesary - this has flowed through into Rhel4 - indeed even in U4 for 3.3 there are occasions where I have had to remove patches because they had been modified upstream by Fedora project and incorporated by Redhat) . > * Issue: yum > Don't ever auto-modify yum.conf. (We need someone in change > of the mirrors) There is no issue here - all of the mirrors use the same paths within the cAos repo - the mirror is just defined as the url including the path to the cAos repo - that does not cause any problems that I can see and can be used in automated scripts. Someone does need to volunteer to write the script to 'auto-modify yum.conf' to use a local mirror (ok not 'auto' maybe) - it would be done on install and manually thereafter - I am guessing a yum-config-centos rpm or some such containing a bash script that actually produces the first yum.conf on install (using the geolocate stuff) and thereafter would only write a .rpmnew unless run manually. How about the yum.conf in the actual yum rpm ?? what will happen to that ?? It is also a shame that yum cannot use iso image sets - although I wonder if with a dvd and all packages on a single disc the [base] repo could be local disc - probably not :( We have Rick Graves managing the mirror database now - I had been doing it up until recently. > * Issue: gpg key. > This should be installed by default so the user does not have to find & > import it. In any event to tell the user that the key has bene installed and how to check whether the key has been compromised/is the right key.
