CentOS-2 i386 errata - Updated ruby package fixes denial of service issue

kernel update with yum - no grub entry

Hi people I am new to this list - actually I am one of (probably) a few who are jumping ship from WBEL. I feel like a bit of a scab jumping over at this time - but we all make mistakes eh? I have installed CentOS and ran 'yum update' and installed everything it prompted me for. After a reboot, I realised I had booted into the same original kernel-2.4.21-20.EL.c0smp and not the updated one - kernel-2.4.21-20.0.1.ELsmp. Upon further inspection I found that there was no entry made in grub.conf for the new kernel, and there is no initrd in /boot for this new kernel. Could someone please explain what has happened and whether it is normal behaviour or not? I am used to updating a kernel with yum and having all of the grub stuff done automatically for me :/ Now that I might have to do it manually myself I am getting all sooky and so came to this list to cry for help (and coz I'm a lazy bastard!). Some questions regarding CEntos

Hello list. I am assigned the task to select a RHEL3 clone operating system for a couple of servers. So far I have found Whitehat Linux, Tao, Scientific Linux and Centos. I like the community developed aspect advantage of Centos compared to the other distros where one or couple people maintain the operating system. - Is this a long term goal project? How does it sustain itself? How much extra money is usually required on a monthly basis for operations? I noticed that developers had to pay for hosting costs when new iso images were released. Wouldn't using bittorrent cut down on downloading costs? - How does Centos compare to other RHEL clones? Are there enough developers to quickly update packages when Redhat makes security announcements? - Do Centos developers have access to RHEL3 machines or is everything done on Centos computers? For that matter do developers compile the Redhat released SRPMS + updates on RHEL computers or are binary RPM packages built on Centos operating system itself? I am asking because it would seem to me that using a full Redhat provided distro to build packages might introduce less erorrs? - What is changed from official RHEL releases besides the copyrighted logos for each Centos release? I am not talking about packages in the addons directories. Just the base os release packages. Unfortuately the FAQ referenced in the mailinglist archive with the solution does not seam to be online anymore. I ran into this same problem with x86-64 and VMWare GSX server, VMWare does not officially support x86-64 yet. The VMWare binaries are 32bit... VMWare problems on CentOS 3.3 x86-64

Hi folks, I'm hoping someone can help with a problem I'm having getting VMWare to work on CentOS 3.3 (x86-64). I recently downloaded VMWare workstation 4.5 (not sure of exact version number but its the latest version as of yesterday). I was hoping to run CentOS as my main OS and then use VMWare to still support Windows XP machines and run the couple of applications which refuse to work properly under Wine. I installed the RPM okay, ran the configuration script fro VMWare, however when it comes to running VMware I get a message about a missing libaray - "ld- linux.so.2". I did a search on the hard disk and couldn't find it. I also couldn't find an RPM package (either source or binary) to install. Everything else on CentOS seems to be going okay, its really fast compared to Suse 9.1 which I was running previously (not sure if thats because I'm running a 64-bit OS or that CentOS doesn't have as much running at once?). Could anyone suggest how I can get this library? Regards, Rob

Kernel Panic on New Kernel Package

Hey all, I have a P4 2.4 GHz CPU (hyper threading) and have been using the 2.4.21-20.EL.c0smp kernel and it works perfectly. I installed the new kernel-smp (2.4.21-20.0.1.EL) kernel and it installed flawlessly. However, every time I boot I get a kernel panic and I must reboot to the older kernel. The error I am getting is: (it seems to be failing on jbd.o and ext3.o) Kernel requires old insmod, but couldn't run /bin/insmod.old No such file or directory Then it can't find the initrd and Panics. I am running a single partition on my software RAID1, the file system is ext3. [root@admin /]# df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/md0 115377576 2014940 107501728 2% / none 512700 0 512700 0% /dev/shm [root@admin /]# I just can't seem to figure it out. I've done some searching online but the fixes people are posting just don't seem logical as my initrd IS there.
