Upgrade install using CentOS-3.1 ISO images

Cutting straight to the chase: When, if ever, does the installer offer an option to upgrade an existing installation, rather than wanting to reformat the disks? More details than you may want: I recently acquired a new PC chassis, with no operating system but with a Serial-ATA disk (which I was not expecting when I ordered it). I set the BIOS for legacy IDE mode and installed RedHat 9, then attempted to upgrade the kernel to add SATA support, without much luck. Searching for the SATA driver modules I found CentOS and decided to try it. I downloaded the three ISO images to another PC, burned CDs, and set about to upgrade my RH9. However, the installer never offered me the option of upgrading (keeping my existing filesystems) -- no matter what steps I tried using when starting the installer, by the time it got to the page for disk partitioning it always wanted to start from scratch and blow the existing partitions away. I finally concluded that I hadn't put anything important on the disks during my struggle with RH9, so I went ahead with the clean install. Everything is working nicely at this point, so thanks for that. However, there are some other RH9 systems around the office that may need to be upgraded at some point, and they definitely can't be wiped clean in the process. Is there a way to upgrade from RH9 to CentOS? Any remarks about upgrading from even older RedHat releases?

Install additional packages from CD

Hi, Newbie here... :) I've installed Centos 3.1 with selecting Custom Packages. Now, I want to install some packages not installed the first time. The manual says that I can use redhat-config-packages but there are no packages that's not installed, just installed packages. So, I can only remove packages.... So, how do I install addtional packages from CD without having to reinstall? I've tried installing manually by opening the RPMs but it always complain about dependency... Thanks, Yayan

Segmentation Fault when using dig, nslookup, host...

I have setup Centos-3.1 on a Dell Optiplex GX1 this week. It has to replace an old Compaq Deskpro I used as a firewall/router running the no longer supported RedHat 7.1. I have the NAT firewall up and running, and it works OK. However, there is one thing bugging me. I cannot use any client software that queries a nameserver. I tried to use "dig", "host" and "nslookup", and they all segfault on me. As all these applications suffer from the same problem, I think it has to be a general problem. Name resolution itself works correct, and other than this I cannot find any real indications of problems. Hello all, I have just installed Centos 3 and I can't help notices that the fonts are blurry. I have been using RH9 and then Fedora and the fonts there are fine, But Whitebox and Centos seem to be blurie. Can anyone tell if Cents has the Byte-code interpreter enabled in Freetype? yum fails on IBMJava2-JRE

My yum update for CentOS-2 started to fail a while ago. http://mirror.centos.org/centos-2/updates/headers/header.info mentions this line: 1:IBMJava2-JRE-1.3.1-10.i386=i386/IBMJava2-JRE-1.3.1-10.i386.rpm But that file doesn't seem to exist anywhere. So I end up with this error and it exits. getting /var/cache/yum/update/headers/IBMJava2-JRE-1-1.3.1-10.i386.hdr Error getting file http://mirror.centos.org/centos-2/updates//headers/IBMJava2-JRE-1-1.3.1-10.i 386.hdr [Errno 6] ERROR: Url Return no Content-Length - something is wrong Please help me understand how I can fix this. That might be a nice option for a testing branch, but wouldn't implementing a 2.6 kernel option go against the Centos 3 objective of reimplementing RHEL 3? Some of the 2.6 kernel enhancements have been backported in the Redhat EL kernel, if I understand correctly. Hola folks, I'm new to Centos and giving it a whirl in a test setting. fresh install - resolv.conf error?

Before I submit as a bug, has anyone else encountered -- doing a fresh, clean install of CentOS-3 results in a resolv.conf with only my secondary nameserver listed and the search domain. The install works fine, the eth0 and eth1 (onboard e100's) are detected, all the right info entered, etc -- typical by the book textmode (not GUI) install that I'd normally do with RH9/RHEL3. Static IP eth0, 2 nameservers, eth1 unused left at defaults. Anyone else confirm? Unfortunately the machine is already in production, so wiping and retrying to confirm isn't an option for me.
