Building rpms

I have been asked to update OpenLDAP to the latest stable version. I am using CentOS 4.2 and have OpenLDAP 2.2.13 installed. I can install from source if I have to, but I would rather stay with rpm packages if possible. I found an rpm from Fedora Core Development on RPMFIND. Will this one work with Centos, or should I grab the source rpm and rebuild it? Bowie

I meant not a visible choice by default :). Thanks for the tip. I was not aware of making it visible in that way. So at the prompt you type: "boot: lilo" ? Is lsdev AWOL?

I was looking at my newly installed CentOS 4.2 system with ls* commands yesterday and lsdev was not on the system. Did I miss installing a package? A Google search for CentOS 4.2 and lsdev was unhelpful. -- Jerry Hubbard hubbardjw(a)charter.net

kernel panic this morning

When I came into work this morning the console had the following: bio_endio __end_that_request_first scsi_end_request scsi_io_completion scsi_finish_command scsi_softirq __do_softirq do_softirg do_irq command_interrupt default_idle cpu_idle start_kernel Panic I am running software RAID-1 on this machine. I had 2 IDE disks and the machine when down once in a while with similiar messages. I switched to brand new 300 GIG SATA drives and now I am seeing the same kernel panic. What might be the problem here? THanks for any suggestions. Machine has 2 GIG RAM, Intel motherboard, Intel CPU 2.4 P4, "/" is 50 GIG, I have a 5 GIG Swap, and the rest is "/home". where / and /home are RAID-1 arrays. Jerry

SELinux niggle

Hi, I am not very experienced with SELinux and I have a problem which I can't track down. Any help would be really appreciated. I have an 'install everything' Centos 4.2 system which I am using as a workstation. Before anyone tells me off for installing everything, I have done this in order to get used to CentOS before using it on live servers. I read James B. Byrne's post on the 15th about audit2allow but I don't believe that I should go fiddling with dbus. Wouldn't that just be shooting the messenger? I know that I wouldn't get these messages on a server because I wouldn't be running X, but I would like to understand what is going on and increase my confidence to admin SELinux properly. Installation problems on old IBM server

I'm trying to install CentOS 4.2 on an old IBM x300 server, but it hangs during the boot from cd. The last entries I can see before it dies are the two "agpgart" lines. I've been playing around with bios settings (video settings and serial settings since the serial driver is the next thing going on in the kernel) and boot params (noapic, acpi=off etc) but I just can't get this thing up and running. It's been working like a charm (and still does) with CentOS 3. Any tips? Regards, Harald

CentOS 4.2 issues

Hello CentOS, I've just taken 2 old servers running CentOS 3.x, wiped it out, and installed CentOS 4.1 The systems seemed to work fine with CentOS 4.1, but when I proceeded to run yum -y update, all the RPM's (101) download and seem to install fine - however, upon reboot, partitions such as /usr/ and /var will not mount (ext3). These machines both use the Intel S875WP1 P4 Mainboards. Both use SATA Drives. One uses the promise controller (which on install seems to find a suitable driver). Anyway, I've also tried installing directly from the CentOS 4.2 Server CD, same issue. Install goes fine, but bootup won't mount /var Any idea what this is all about? -- Best regards, Mickael mailto:centos@silverservers.com
