Running another gnome or kde on virtual console

Hi, I'm still new in linux world and CentOS is my 2nd linux desktop I ever used ( have used it for month now, before using Ubuntu for 2 days ), so please gave me a little favor on it :) What I need to do is to have my virtual console that can also run gnome or kde, so I can have different windows on different virtual console. After googling, I found the qingy that just fit for my need. I try to install qingy ( http://qingy.sourceforge.net ) on my desktop by following the manual at qingy site with no luck :( after googling for the more installations howto, I found that most of it is for gentoo linux.. does anybody here with success story of it want to share info on installing it? I have install directfb as required by qingy but when I run fbset, I got error about /dev/fb0 can't opening.. if I follow the manual on qingy site, it's should list the display mode.. anybody can brief me what the error is all about and how I could create the /dev/fb0 file? When I go to virtual console ( alt+ctrl+f2 ), I got messages : Warning : cannot get console framebuffer resolutions! Unrecoverable error: reverting to text mode! Anyone have any ideal what that means? I have set : video=vesafb:ywrap mtrr vga=0x317 at grub configurations after the kernel statement, anyone have any suggestions? Anyone please shed me some light on this, and thanks in advances, If anyone can guide me on howto to have X running on virtual-console, I really appreciate it and sorry for my bad english Regards. ijez

Amavis on centos

I already have installed, postfix, squirrelmail, dovecot, spamassassin and clamav. The only thinks that I missed up is some interface between clamav , spamassassing and postfix, I am trying with amavis-new but I gat this error when I try to install amavis from the tar file. ERROR: MISSING REQUIRED BASIC MODULES: IO::Wrap IO::Stringy Unix::Syslog Mail::Field Mail::Address Mail::Header Mail::Internet Compress::Zlib MIME::Words MIME::Head MIME::Body MIME::Entity MIME::Parser MIME::Decoder MIME::Decoder::Base64 MIME::Decoder::Binary MIME::Decoder::QuotedPrint MIME::Decoder::NBit MIME::Decoder::UU MIME::Decoder::Gzip64 Net::Server Net::Server::PreForkSimple BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at ./amavisd line 147. LVM Snapshot Create Error

Just discovered that on CentOS 4.1 when you issue the command: lvcreate -s -n temp -L2G /dev/vgname/lvname to create a snapshot, you get the error message: snapshot: Required device-mapper target(s) not detected in your kernel I've checked and recheck my spelling and tried using the device created under /dev/mapper. I've tried it on both x86_64 and on i386. Works as expected under CentOS 3.5. Any ideas what is going on?

How does CentOS compare with FC 3

I have FC 3 running on my "play/test" box. Is CentOS (RHEL) a level above? Can I do an Upgrade or should I do an Install? Todd --

amavis again

I am progressing with this but i still gat a problem. . When I get to the step when I am supposed to install amavisd , I get the following error message: Can't locate BerkeleyDB.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /System/Library/Perl//darwin-2level /System/Library/Perl/ /Library/Perl//darwin-2level /Library/Perl/ /Library/Perl/ /Network/Library/Perl//darwin-2level /Network/Library/Perl/ /Network/Library/Perl/) at /usr/bin/amavisd line 5025. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/amavisd line 5025. BerkeleyDB.pm is in my CPAN directory and even when I moved it to /Library/Perl it did not work (not sure if I was supposed to even do that) Please help. Thanks for your help. While I know that, technically, the only i586 machines are the Pentium and Pentium MMX, it is still nice that I can use some headless AMD K6/2 machines I have lying around for CentOS 4. Linux newbie asks about sonypi on laptop

Okay. I've been able to set my laptop's screen brighter by working with the program spicctrl and the sonypi device. But everytime I boot, I login under my username then have to do the following every time... First I go into the bash terminal, then su because I can't do this under my login name mknod /dev/sonypi c 10 250 #because sonypi is not listed in /dev - it disappears everytime I shut down then I type chmod o+w sonypi #because I want to be able under my login name, not root, to set the brightness then i exit su and type spicctrl --setbrightness=150 and it works... My questions are: Why do I have to recreate the device every time? Shouldn't it be there every time? Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Ralph Loizzo

Reinstall Windows but preserve CentOS

I have a computer that dual boots between Windows and CentOS. Each has it's own hard drive. I suddenly have a problem with Windows, and may need to reinstall. I need it for applications like After Effects, Premiere, and other things that I am currently in the middle of a project with. It seems the system has become usnstable, it's preventing me from continuing to work, and I may need to wipe the Windows partition clean and start again. My concern is that if I do that, I will lose the Grub boot loader and not be able to access CentOS again. How can I reinstall Windows with a clean partition, and preserve my dual booting? Dave

sda of CentOS 4 and hda Windows dual boot possible?

greetings, since i have a test server in front of me and i have never tried it i request your assistance please. ive always been a fdisk and lilo person i have a fresh CentOS 4 "test" install on a WD120 sata /dev/sda /dev/sda1 / /dev/sda2 /boot /dev/sda3 swap and it just so happens i have a old test 17Gig Maxtor PATA with a fresh Win98 on it from helping my father migrate to a newer cpu and opsys when i go into a fdisk /dev/hda i get this "print" /dev/hda1 c: w95 fat32 lba /dev/hda2 w95 ext lba /dev/hda5 d: w95 fat 32 currently i can boot into the CentOS 4 install and it does not see the PATA drive by default unless i go into fdisk of course. it is not mounted. or i can switch them and boot into win98, whatever is best for this learning test. ive always tried to have 2 or more (hot/cold swapouts) of everything client and server hardwares so i never needed to dual boot. can someone show me what steps they would take using linux rescue to get this "test" situation to dual boot please? i did try with "linux rescue" and was rec'v grub not found errors when running grub-install /dev/sda so im sure i have done something worng. also, i can make the windows pata drive primary or the linux sata primary so please advise what is best. maybe i didnt understand the recent thread re: dual boot situation. thanks in advance and kind regards, - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications http://www.abbacomm.net
