Raid / dual Opteron power issues

Hi All, I've just started caring for a dual Opteron machine. It has a 3Ware 9500S-12 RAID controller, a Tyan S2882G3NR motherboard, 10 IBM 400GB disk drives, and a 650 watt power supply. It has been behaving itself quite nicely until recently. The poor behavior started when I upgraded the OS from CentOS 4.1 (32 bit) to Centos 4.1 (x86_64). When running in uniprocessor mode, the system appears to work properly. However, when running in SMP mode I get a lot of SCSI disk errors in /var/log/messages. I've upgraded the 3w_9xxx driver and firmware, but no joy (actually, I did get some joy out of recompiling the kernel. Its been several years since I last compiled a kernel and the process has changed for the better). I've been in contact with 3Ware. From the error logs I supplied to them, it looks like the issue is an insufficient power supply. Their rule of thumb is 300W for the motherboard and 35 W for each disk drive. That means that I would need (at a theoretical minimum) a 650 W power supply - which I have. I only notice the problem in SMP mode, not in uniprocessor mode. That suggests to me that (1) I have a boarderline-sufficient power supply that can support one but not two CPUs or (2) there is a problem with the combination of Opteron/3Ware 9500S-12 hardware and the x86_64 SMP kernel. I suppose there are even worse possibilities, but I'd rather not think about those right now. What do you think? Does anyone have any experience with this sort of hardware on x86_64 kernels? Does the 3w_9xxx driver work well on a x86_64 machine? Does anyone have a suggestion as to what capacity power supply I should have? Thank you, Evan

system reboots after shutdown

Hi all, When i want to shutdown my laptop (the result is the same from command line as from gdm), screen gets blank, but computer restarts. APM is disabled (this laptop doesn't support it), and disabling ACPI is no solution, because it controls the fan. Kernel version is 2.6.9-11.EL and CPU is Pentium Centrino. Laptop is an AIRIS 840. I use different distros (ubuntu, debian and knoppix) to reproduce this problem without a result. How can I solve this problem?. Building bacula RPM from Karanbir's repo

Hi all, Has anyone tried to rebuild bacula from the source RPM provided on Karanbir's CentOS yum repo? Every time I give it a go, I'm given this error during the configure stage: checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you must specify one make[1]: Entering directory `/home/rpmbuilder/rpmbuild/BUILD/depkgs/mtx-1.2.17kes' make[1]: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/rpmbuilder/rpmbuild/BUILD/depkgs/mtx-1.2.17kes' make: *** [mtx] Error 2 error: Bad exit status from /home/rpmbuilder/rpmbuild/tmp/rpm-tmp.1839 (%build) I've tried specifying the host type in the spec file itself by entering the following: --host=x86_64-centos-linux-gnu and --host=x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu but neither have worked. This is my first go at building bacula, so I'm pretty sure I'm missing something: I just don't know what. Do I need to enter a macro in my .rpmmacros file? Currently: %_topdir %(echo "$HOME")/rpmbuild %_tmppath %{_topdir}/tmp Is the spec file hosed? Something else entirely? Any help would be appreciated. [OT] 3Ware 9.2.1.1 firmware for 9000 series released

Here are the version numbers I get after installing the 9.2.1.1 release: Model 9500S-4LP Firmware FE9X 2.08.00.003 Driver 2.26.03.019fw BIOS BE9X 2.03.01.052 Boot Loader BL9X 2.02.00.001 A bit confusing. Can't mount FAT32 partition

I am trying to mount a FAT32 partition in CentOS. I'm following the instructions on this page: http://www.linuxforum.com/linux_tutorials/14/1.php This is the line I put into /etc/fstab /dev/hda /mnt/windows vfat users,owner,rw,umask=000 0 0 And this is the error I get: [root@localhost mnt]# mount -a mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda, or too many mounted file systems What is the cause of this error? Show ShutDown steps

Is there a way to make Centos 4.1 show you the shutdown steps it is executing without having to hit a key on the keyboard (such as in Fedora Core 2 or Red Hat 9)?

My CentOs 4.1 desktop starts to freez ( non-responsive) with 100% cpu usage

It starts to become a non-responsive from time to time with 100% cpu usage eventhough there is no applications running except a browser. I have been running centos 4 for the past 6 months without any problem with regular update. Now, I have to reboot whenever it shows signs of a non-response. It starts to exhibit this behaviour a cople of days ago. I could not figure it out the reason and need help. Is there any tools to troubleshoot this ? I have tried top, system monitor.. 'Many' packages installed - CentOS 4.1

Hi Installed my first CentOS box last night after coming from Whitebox - This is perhaps me being stupid but on install i opted for 'Custom' install as i prefer minimal and then build as i suit. I went through the list of things to install and removed everything apart from networking. Install happenned and tons of stull ended up being installed including X openoffice and the like - Why was that when i de-selected everything apart from networking? It was very much bloatware and not what i want on a server. thanks for any hints

Mod_auth_mysql

Hello, I just upgraded from WBEL 4 to Centos 4.1 per the FAQ. I'm pretty sure after running 'yum update', mysql and apache were updated. I was previously using mod_auth_mysql under WBEL 4 to password protect several directories but now things seem to be broken. When I go to a password protected directory I get an Internal Server Error 500. The only explanation in the error log is "no user file?" Any ideas? TIA
