install on a Dell4400 perc2 /DC

I got fedora core 4 to install and show me the configured Raid drives. no mean trick let me tell you. However, the platform is unstable and hangs. I tried Centos 4.1 but the raid drives are not identified like most other distros. can i do anything from the fedora install that might allow me to install the centos distro. I would rather not have to go out and buy a new raid card. peter richards

pop before smtp

Hi! Im using postfix+postfixadmin+mysql+courier-imap i just implemented pop-before-smtp[1], my problem is after recieving the mails i connect to the server using telnet and try to send spam using the mail server it did send it didn't ask for authentication anymore. i'm not sure how this pop-before-smtp really works but i was thinking how should i secure the server in this kind of attacks. yum custom install

I am trying to learn some of the in's and out's of yum, and thanks to the help of many on this forum, things are beginning to make more sense (though I still have a lot more to learn). My initial Centos install was the "minimum". From there I used yum grouplist and yum installgroup. However, one of the members helped me with using yum to install php-mysql and I just found on this forum php-gd (which I installed). It appears one "just has to know about these packages" or have I missed something? Once I have an install that I like, can I save off the list of packages and use it the next time I do an install? Semi-OT: OpenSource DRM server on CentOS?

Hello, all - I understand that this is moderately OT, but hey, since I plan on running it on top of CentOS.... ;) Please bear with me. For our company's internal use of protected media, I have been asked to investigate any and all kinds of OpenSource DRM servers/services. I wouldn't imagine that (if this exists) an OpenSource DRM server daemon would exist on the stock CentOS release, but if such a beast does live, where might I find it? Anyone have any names, or sites that might list something such as this? Anyone have experience in this realm? Thanks! -dant

bind and bind-chroot

greetings on a CentOS 4 _server_ install for a dns server rpm -qa | grep bind bind-9.2.4-2 bind-libs-9.2.4-2 bind-chroot-9.2.4-2 bind-utils-9.2.4-2 ypbind-1.17.2-3 rpm -qa | grep name caching-nameserver-7.3-3 ok, so i do this yum remove caching-nameserver and it is gone. now, do i need to leave bind-9.2.4-2 to use the bind-chroot-9.2.4-2 ??? or can i yum remove bind and still have a functional nameserver with only bind-chroot phg on there?? hopefully this makes sense. i was always so used to the old slackware ways of snag what you need, compile, config and go... thanks - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications http://www.abbacomm.net

RAID5 - MBR and default grub config on CentOS 4

greetings, i just know i have read several times on this list and in other places that on a RAID5 array that the MBR should be placed on the /boot partition. is this truly correct and if so, why? my experiences of putting the MBR on the /boot partition are contrary to that it will even work and boot that way... comments please? regards, - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications http://www.abbacomm.net

New User: Kudos, small/old platform, RPM Illegal Instruction

Hello All! My 1st use of CentOS went well on my later eqpt. Thanks and congrats on a good product. Figured I might as well see if I could use it on some old stuff, still good but obsolete. Picked an AMD 5x86 (equivalent to a Pentium 75 MHz) and decided to see if I could make it my gateway/router. Had some difficulties, not unexpected. Old CD drive couldn't read the CDs. No boot from CD in BIOS. Floppy was broken. Memory is 36 MB. VLB MB, appx. 1 GB old slow drives, etc. Decided to plug HD into another unit and do install there. Went OK, but for some reason, all the junk I tried to turn off still appears to get started. Anyway, my problem is that RPM traps with illegal instruction when a query all, among other combinations, is attempted. It does not do it on my AMD XP, but does do it on the old one. Possible that RPM was compiled with a later arch specified? If so, is there a way to recompile it on my faster machine for execution on the older machine? Or has someone already fixed this and I can download or something? I'm relatively new to this distribution stuff (been doing LFS in the past and many other *IX things before that). I did a search using "rpm illegal instruction" of the lists, but didn't see anything that seemed appropriate. By the way, if the rc.sysinit has the swapon moved up to the front, things work OK. If not, things freeze up as mem is exhausted. Swapon does not appear to be bothered by the fact that LVM is not in control yet. Even if it is, I added another disk, set up two swap areas there and sailed on. Performance counts on a (equiv. to) P75! 8-O If all this works out, I'll try to send some money. Also, *if* I'm able, I will help test what I can. Got an old Aptiva over in the corner too. Hmmm.... am I really a candidate for this org? Maybe not?

Antivirus logging linux

Hey Guys, I have a network of windows clients with a couple of linux servers for various tasks. What I would like to do is have some form of antivirus on the clients that will log alerts to something on a linux server and store the info in sql. Anybody have any idea on something that can do this? I tried asking on the securityfocus virus list and I emailed grisoft about their network product. Neither proved fruitful... I want to be able to run my own custom reporting from sql on the fly basically... Any pointers would be _greatly_ appreciated as even googling doesn't appear to be helping me here... Thanks, Wayne
