[Semi-OT] Advice on large webmail setup

Hi all, As the resident Linux guru, I've just been tasked with costing a webmail setup for about 600 000 users. They each have 10MiB (small, I know) mailboxes. The current setup has about 40 million web page accesses per month. Has anyone here any experience with this kind of thing? If so, any pointers as to software and hardware used, and any other advice would be appreciated. TIA -- Cheers! (Relax...have a homebrew) Neil THEOREM: VI is perfect. Team CentOS breaks though the 200 ranking barrier.

Congratulations to all the CentOS folding@home team members for breaking through the 200 world ranking barrier. Its taken a bit of time but we've all helped to do it. Our next target is obviously to achieve 150th in the world ranking. But, to help achieve that we're going to need more members and more machines. Local mirroring of the CentOS repos

I figured I try if I can mirror the base and updates repos locally. There's no tutorial for that, only one about creating your own repo of packages which is not the same. So, I just mirrored all the stuff with wget and changed the baseurl in the repo files and hoped that's enough. Works. So easy you don't need a tutorial. *But* I then realized that the updates directory contains *all* updates, not just the latest. Which means if I don't regularly check I may get old versions mirrored I don't want. It also means that I get a lot of unwanted files at the time I start to mirror. And I cannot delete old files as these would again be mirrored in. An obvious solution would be to check each day and tell wget (or whatever software I use) to ignore files older than 24 hours. Still, this means the initial download has to get them all and I have to delete all unwanted old files manually. Is there a better solution? How to create initrd.img

Hi, anyone to point me URL on initrd.img creating? I have custom kernel and want to create initrd.img for install media. mkinitrd /tmp/initrd.img 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5.hrb -v -f create unusable file for install media. Thanks, David

(so should be good for about a year) The P5K-VM I was able to setup as AHCI in bios which is why I was able to get as far as I did. But there was no setting to do the same with the P5KC even though I had the latest BIOS. I still need to get the P5K-VM setup and since it is a server I would still like to use Centos. Taking file from pyhsical disk to new virtual disk

Hi I am playing with virtualization on centos 5. I have an old redhat 7 system I still need so I want to virtualize it. I found the old disk, installed in the virtual environment but found I had done some additions WAY back. I want to be sure my virtual system is exactly the same as the ACTUAL system. Do I use cpio on the actual system to grab everything and then put that back on the virtual system? What would the format of the command be to grab it and extract it? I have never used cpio and dont want to screw something up. Is there a better way? Jerry

Hi, im trying to create a trimmed down version of centos. just the base installation no services or anything, if i can trim it down to kernel bash and yum only working that would be great. What programs and dependencies i need for this kind of installation? thanks!

program calls system() gettind PID - slightly off topic

I have a C program on centos. When I call system("some_program &"); how do I get the PID of the some_program? I cant just list processes as there might be more than one some_program active. I need to know the one that I just started. Thanks, Jerry

Time Change
