NDOutils ./configure results; do I need gcc?

Balsa for CentOS ??

Anybody know where I can find a RPM of a recent version of Balsa for RH5 or Centos 5? Dag, et al, don't seem to have it. Replacing failed software RAID drive

CentOS release 4.5 Hi All: First of all I will admit to being spoiled by my MegaRAID SCSI RAID controllers. When a drive fails on one of them I just replace the drive and carry on with out having to do anything else. I now find myself in the situation where I have a failed drive on a non-MegaRAID controller, specifically an Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller. The system is an Acer G700 with 8 internal hot-swappable SCSI drives arranged in two banks of 4 drives. Each bank is connected to a separate channel on the 29160 controller. When I installed CentOS 4 I enable software mirroring between the two banks so that I ended up with 4 pairs of mirrored drive (sda/sde, sdb/sdf, sdc/sdg, sdd/sdh). The problem I have now is that it is sda (the boot drive) that has failed. I have not encountered this problem before and therefore I need to make sure that I understand what I need to do before I start mucking around with things and dig myself into a deeper hole. I have spent much time attempting to research the problem but have not been able to come with any definite information to help. As far as I can see I have two options... Option 1: Leave the system running and replace the drive. Then either the RAID software will re-sync the drives or I can manually sync them with mdadm. I have not seen anything that will support this option but I am hoping that it is a valid option. Option 2: Create a boot disk (floppy or CD) that I can boot from but that points to sde (the boot mirror). Shutdown the system and replace the failed sda drive. Boot from the new boot disk. Format, partition and re-sync the new sda from sde. Shutdown, remove the boot disk, and reboot from the new sda. Can anyone confirm either of these options and point me in the right direction to any documentation that would assist me. nscd segfaulting on centos 4.5

Does anyone know if there is a fix for nscd segfaulting after a short period of time. Googling for it came up with one result that suggested deleting the files in /var/db/nscd , but that didn't help. Another result was about run away processes which is not the problem I'm having. CD emulation (a la daemontools)

I was wondering if anyone was aware of a method for mounting virtual CD devices with CD image files. I keep images (.CUE/.BIN pairs) of my CD collection on a NAS appliance tucked away in my closet. I'd like to write a script to mount each one, create ID tags, rip the tracks, then move along to the next one. I figure with a quad core opteron, it should be able to crank through them in a few days (it's a few thousand CD's worth of images). Anyone done this before with their trusty CentOS box? I'd be using CentOS 5. Best,

Thanks for the replies (and thanks Matt, PCI-e is indeed what I meant -brain freeze moment), I realise "linux dd" works -and is in fact how I've installed CentOS 5, but unfortunately I require a card (PCI even!) that will not require driver updates every kernel update and support a minimum of 6 ports in RAID 1. Being a noob at Linux I'm having trouble sourcing a card that is supported in the 2.6.18 kernel without the need to install drivers, and replies from manufacturers either evade the question or require a Masters degree in Linux, so I thought I'd tap into the combined knowledge of everyone here! So I'm still open to suggestions! ssh X11 forwarding not working

I'm having problems with ssh.com and X11 forwarding ssh: SSH Secure Shell 3.2.0 (non-commercial version) on i686-pc-linux-gnu I am in the process of testing some of my machines with CentOS 5 x86/x86_64 and have run into a bit of a snag. X11 Forwarding is not working. I've tried all combinations of (+/-)[Xx] and it doesn't work, seemingly it doesn't want to set the environment variable properly and therefore doesn't know where to send the X requests. Any hints? I've checked the ssh config files and they seem to be identical to the config files on our existing SuSE 10.0 machines which are working. This is troubling indeed. -- James A. NFS and Firewall

Hi Folks, I'm using VMWare on a Linux Host (CentOS) with a Linux-Guest Sidux). And I'd like to use NFS. Furthermore I'd like to use the Firewall in CentOS with this little GUI. If I activate this firewall then my Guest says "no route to host" on mounting nfs. Firewall disabled -> no problem occurs. Is there a solution to use firewall _and_ nfs ? Please, no iptables scripts. I'd like to use this small GUI for the firewall. Thx Timothy

two internet connections questions

I have two internet connections. One is a partial T1 of data (and rest voice) the other is business cable. Both connections come into my office into (2) centos 5 boxs with 2 ethernet cards in each box. The second ethernet card is 192.168.1.59 and 192.168.1.1 respectively. I have all my DHCP settings setup for a gateway of 192.168.1.1 In the event that the internet connection is DOWN (box is fine just the cable modem is down) how do I set things up so I can take advantage of the second internet connection? Look for users in both LDAP and /etc/passwd

Im running CentOS 5 with samba configured as PDC, with samba 3.0.24 and openldap-servers-2.3.30-2. My /etc/nsswitch.conf is like this: passwd: files ldap shadow: files ldap group: files ldap The problem is when I try to restart LDAP (/etc/init.d/ldap restart) then the init script just hangs. I suppose it will try to run slapd as the ldap user The ldap user is not in LDAP only in /etc/passwd, how can i configure my system to look for users first in LDAP and then in /etc/passwd When I remove LDAP from my /etc/nsswitch.conf, so it looks like below passwd: files shadow: files group: files then ldap start up nicely, but then my LDAP users can't sign in I tried to do different changes in pam, but without any progress Please advice
