SSH question

On my logwatch that I have emailed to me, I see a line where I'm showed logging in via a known ip address, and when I log in from my laptop through my EV-DO card wirelessly, the computer show log in as ok, but it can not translate the ip from the aircard and marks the log in as a possible hack attempt. repo location for gnome package manager

Where does the package manager in gnome look for its repos? I have my local repos, and of course I want to get packages from there. I have set up yum to use them, but cannot see how the package manager is configured.

NOSSO(r) compression

I just downloaded solaris. They have two versions, the split DVD that comes with two 1.2GB zipped chunks and an exe which is 1.2GB but uncompresses to the full 2.5+GB. I found some info on them here: http://www.nosltd.com/nosso.html Any idea how they achieve such great compression? Looks like they're using a proprietary algorithm and don't offer any downloads. Also looks like it's windows only. Is there a linux/open source alternative out there? Russ

IO load takes IO wait into it's calculation, so it may be a writer process hammering the disks which are under powered for the IO load. It'll be fine (i.e. something like load average: 2.14, 1.27, 1.03), and then in a single sample, jump to something like the above. This seems to happen once a week or so on a few different servers (all running in a similar application). I've never seen the 1 minute sample spike as high as the 5 or 15 minute samples. Seeing as that last value is a 15 minute period, well, it doesn't seem possible that one can have a 500+ 15 minute sample without having observed a spike in the 5 minute sample at least 5 minutes before. Also, there aren't 500+ processes on these systems -- it's typically around 100 total processes (ps auxw | wc -l). (Is there a way to see the total count of kernel-level threads?) Install CentOS based distro

Hi, I'm making a dedicated distribution based on CentOS 5.1 My doubt is about the installation of the "new" distro. I was thinking about a (K)ubuntu kind of way: the CD/DVD boots, a graphical interface appears with an "Install" button, just a click on it and then just wait to finish. Now, I'd like to avoid building RPMs for my added software. Is this possible this way ? Other suggestions are welcome. Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, Mário Gamito

Using systemtap under Xen / Centos 5.1?

I'm trying to use systemtap to monitor per process diskio performance, however when trying to start stap it says I need kernel debug packages installed. Where can I find the kernel-xen-debuginfo and kernel-debuginfo-common packages for 5.1? Greets, Chris

yum update repo problems

Hi I noticed today that all my Centos servers are giving same error on "yum update". Error is: ---------------------------------- Loading "installonlyn" plugin Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories rpmforge 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=i386&repo=os error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')> Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base ---------------------------------- Servers are scattered around in different networks. Yum update has been workin OK on all of them. Centos 4.5 servers are giving similar error, but with less detail. Servers are relaying heavily on DNS for everyday work, so that should rule out DNS issues (all are running caching-nameservers). Is there any problem with repos? Anybody else having same erors? all the best Vahur
