32bit HVM within CentOS5 x86_64+xen3?

Hi *! I have to install a xen virtualization host that will start with 4GB RAM and will maybe grow to 8GB in the future. And there has to be a 32bit winXP domU. Is CentOS5(.1) x86_64 able to run 32bit HVMs or do i have to stick with i386/PAE? /nils.

Adding user's and groups

Is it ok to edit the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files manually to add users and groups or would this circumvent other required system commands from being executed when adding them at the command line via useradd and groupadd? In reading the docs @ http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/s1-users-tools.htm… I see a user that is created with these utilities is disabled until unlocked with passwd. If someone is creating users for services without home dirs and shell access, how do you handle the password? Looking at the example provided in a doc I am reading, there is "*" in the password field in the passwd file. Is that suggesting it's just not displayed in the doc, or does the "*" have specific meaning? Thanks! jlc

Obtuse-smtpd and Postfix

Hi all.. I would like to switch to CENTOS Postfix from sendmail. My current sendmail, in combination with the very old obtuse-smtpd, allows me: 1. To control who of the internal users can send mail and to which domain or accounts 2. To control who of the internal users can receive mail and from which domain or accounts 3. To obtain a copy of all sent mails 4. To obtain a copy of all received mails Obtuse-smtpd is very easy to configure and very effective. It takes control of all smtp activities over Port 25 and, after filtering and checking, passes the safe mails to sendmail for final delivery. Obtuse can, also, check for addressability, through DNS, of the mail sender and other useful features. Unfortunately, obtuse-smtpd is so old that it works only (don't be surprised) with old sendmail versions. So, I always have to uninstall the in-OS shipped modern sendmail version and replace it with the proper old version. Now: Can Postfix do all this ? Or, at least: Can Postfix work in combination with obtuse-smtpd ? (at the end, obtuse just calls sendmail for the real mail delivery; it only receives mail in port 25 and checks what it receives with its rules, allowing or rejecting at the end) Thanks a lot, in advance. Replacement for Linux-HA (heartbeat) - RedHat cluster?

Hello, I'm beginning to give up on making Linux-HA's heartbeat work for my environment (CentOS x86_64) and am wondering what other option have I got to help me: 1. Use IPVS to maintain a cluster of virtual servers, either master/slave or load-balanced. 2. Use DRBD in master/slave fashion to keep a home-grown application highly-available. The first thing I stumbled upon is RedHat Cluster Suite ( http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/centos_linux_guides/centos_cluster_c…) from which I also saw some packages on my CentOS servers. I've never heard of it before and am just starting to dig its docs, but if someone here can confirm/deny that this is a possible route to take it might save me some time or doubts. Thanks, --Amos

Searching for beagle

Hi, there was a message in the list at Fri 26 Oct 2007 21:13:58, that beagle was added to centos testing repo. But I could not find it there. Please could someone give me an advice. Thank's a lot! "We have added beagle-0.2.18, tomboy-0.8.1, and mono-1.2.4 to the CentOS-5 testing repo for both x86_64 and i386." Are there any experiences with beagle under centos 5? Is it usable now or will it slow down my desktop like it did under fedora core 6? regards Olaf

Centos 5.1 distro: How to upgrade 5.0 to 5.1 with yum??

Hi, Redhat announced RHEL 5.1 on Nov 07, so hopefully CentOS 5.1 will be ready shortly. But I get kind of nervous of the arrival of 5.1. My problem is: I have hundreds Centos 5.0 boxes just finished installation and I will continue to install and upgrade hundreds more in next few months. With the arrival of Centos 5.1, I don't like to reinstall them anymore but continuous upgrade instead -- if this is possible? Currently I download the Centos 5.0 upgrade packages from mirror sites on Internet (.../centos/5/updates/{SRPMS,i386,x86_64}/...), with the arrival of Centos 5.1, are the existing Centos 5.0 update packages will be removed in honor of Centos 5.1 updates? or it will stay? And how about the Centos 5.1's default packages in distro? Give an example here: 2.6.18-8.1.15 version kernel is the most recently updated kernel for Centos 5.0 distro, if the Centos 5.1 distro comes with 2.6.18-8.1.10000 kernel and in the first few weeks there are no kernel updates for 5.1, then how can I upgrade my kernel to 2.6.18-8.1.10000 naturally -- will the 2.6.18-8.1.10000 shows in the same update sources directories(.../centos/5/updates/{SRPMS,i386,x86_64/...)? A similar question is: are the update diretories contains only updates for 5.1 distro, or both 5.0 and 5.1? Deleting a user?

Hello, I've compiled linux-ha heartbeat into an RPM but when I try to install it (after "yum erase heartbeat*") it complains that the user hacluster still exists: # rpm -ivh heartbeat-2.1.2-1.x86_64.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] useradd: user hacluster exists error: %pre(heartbeat-2.1.2-1.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 9 error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping heartbeat-2.1.2-1 I ran "userdel -r hacluster" which just disabled the user login then edited /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow to remove this user completely, but I still get this error. What else can I do to remove this user and help useradd succeed? I'd rather not force script-skipping if at all possible. Thanks, --Amos
