Problems with screensavers / X config

Errors in display settings

This is what nvidia-settings gave me on the terminal window before it brought up its own (useless) window - anyone know what this means (or is it all related back to the other thread I posted on screensaver problems)? [mhr@mhrichter ~]$ nvidia-settings ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display. ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'. Gnome Commander

Hello. I use Centos 4.4 on desktop now and I was looking for gnome-commander, I see that RHEL or any RHEL based distro provides RPMs, only FC5 and FC7. Also Dag repository have this only for FC1. I would like know if there is anyo ther package better or similar to this, or any other package similar to Norton Commander. CentOS-5 beta Virtual Guest Setup Problem

Hi all, Using virt-manager to install a fully virtualized guest of CentOS 4.4 from DVD media fails after reboot at end of anaconda install process. Google has NOT been my friend on this but I know someone else has seen this problem, just no answers yet, and reading the docs has only resulted in more questions than answers (?my problem?). I think that the problem is in getting the vncpasswd for the reboot to display the GU. The qumu-dm*.log file shows this as: xs_read(): vncpasswd get error. /vm/8373baf3-8dd8-8559-19ad-546cf0283b0b/vncpasswd issued domain 1 reboot The xend.log and the virt-manager.log don't seem to be showing me any errors in the process, but then I just may not be interpreting them correctly. My system is a supermicro X7DBE+ with 2 Xeon 5160, 8G RAM and 4 147G SAS drives setup as raid 10. I did set the BIOS to allow virtualization. The CentOS 5 was a clean default install as a server GU with the virtualization option added. I have to admit that at best I only know enough to be dangerous, (that would be on a good day) having come over to linux from another OS and am more at the user level than a sys op, but I am trying to learn. Any help or hints would be appreciated. Mark

Kernel question(s): I/O handling

I have been chasing down the way the inode and page caches are structured and handled, but there is a mystery I have not been able to track down yet. How does the I/O queue that dirty inodes and pages are put into when it's time to flush them out to disk get picked up? Also, where are the sources for the I/O schedulers? I haven't been able to locate them yet either. I know this should not be too hard to locate, but it seems as though there's some magic involved when the inode/page gets put in the i/o queue and then <something happens here> and the i/o is scheduled and, eventually, performed. Consolidating LVM volumes..

Hi, Something I haven't done before is reduce the number of volumes on my server.. Here is my current disk setup.. [root@server1 /]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-RootVol00 15G 1.5G 13G 11% / /dev/md0 190M 42M 139M 24% /boot /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-DataVol00 39G 16G 22G 42% /data none 157M 0 157M 0% /dev/shm /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-HomeVol00 77G 58G 15G 80% /home /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-VarVol00 16G 382M 15G 3% /var Rather than try and reduce the size of the VarVol00 volume to make more unallocated space which I have heard is a little dangerous.. I would like to get rid of the VarVol00 and have the /var directory on the RootVol00 volume.. Then I can allocate some of the free space to HomeVol00 which is filling up.. So how do I do this? Do I simply copy /var to /var2 and then edit the /etc/fstab file to remove the line that mounts VarVol00?? Then at what point and how do I rename /var2 to /var to get it all working as normal again? Should this all be done in "single" mode? As you can see I am really not sure about this procedure so any help or step by step instructions for be great.. Thanks..

Command not running in crontab

Hi, Can anoyone tell me why this command is not executed (or it is without success) from crontab, but works perfectly from the command line ? (yes, i've restarted crontab service) # clean up postmaster 00 30 * * * root /usr/bin/find /var/qmail/maildirs/postmaster(a)telbit.pt/Maildir/new -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -n 50 rm The mind boggles... Updating the DVD ISO howto?

I seem to remember this being addressed before, but I can't find the howto anywhere. I've got a friend heading to another country with VERY limited bandwidth. He'd like me to update the 4.4 DVD to include all of the updated RPMS from updated. Where can I find the scripts to update the meta data on the RPMS and create a new bootable DVD? Thanks! Ben
