Centos 5 killing applications

I recently upgraded to CentOS5, and now I have application that suddenly close. Did not have any problem under 4.x Applications that crash regularly. Claws mail [compiled under CentOS5] VMware 5.5.3 workstation I see nothing in /var/log/messages. In vmware-0.log I have: May 11 00:18:56: vmx| * May 11 00:18:56: vmx| * The UI terminated unexpectedly. May 11 00:18:56: vmx| * If you file a bug or support request about this issue, May 11 00:18:56: vmx| * please include log and core file(s) from the UI if May 11 00:18:56: vmx| * available. May 11 00:18:56: vmx| * May 11 00:18:56: vmx| Unable to continue without a UI. Any suggestion on what's causing the crashes. STRANGE MOUSE POINTER BEHAVIOUR - CENTOS-5

Hi All, I have done a fresh install of CentOS-5 (64bit) from CD's downloaded and sha1sum checked. The install is a minimal version with KDE and XEN - to use as DOM0. However when booting up and logging in the mouse pointer appears as normal. Once in the Graphical screen the pointer disappears. The mouse does work as you can see changes in the icons on the screen when moving in around and if you click on an icon it opens. I have tried various setting for the mouse pointer but nothing makes it visible. Any pointers ? TIA ChrisG

The kickstart in this instance is passing through a firewall appliance, which I think is Open/FreeBSD based and we now believe is breaking tcp window scaling. It seems that CentOS3&4 was unaffected by this but with v5 network connections hang after transferring about 500k. On a network that does not pass through this firewall v5 works as expected. Dean

centos5 cifs/autofs

Hi all I am trying to use the cifs module to mount a share from a win2k3 server but I am getting the following error in /var/log/messages - the filesystem does mount but i'm having other issues accessing the data from our web based app. Can anyone explain why I get this error please? Do not forget to double check the /etc/nsswitch.conf file too. The line that starts with `hosts:' should have `files' listed first and `dns' last. New Centos User - Yum Repositories Question

I've been using Red Hat and its derivatives since RH4.2. I use Fedora Core 6 for all of my desktop machines, but I decided to go for Centos 5 for my new colo web server. So I've just taken delivery of a new Centos 5 virtual server from Bytemark (http://bytemark.co.uk/) and I'm trying to get it set up with all the RPMs that I'm used to from FC6. As I understand it, the Centos Extras repository at http://centos.karan.org/ is the equivalent of Fedora Extras, so I've downloaded and installed the *.repo file from that site. But I still don't seem to have access to all of the RPMs that I was hoping for. I was particularly looking for the Perl CPAN modules that are part of Fedora Extras. Very few of those seem to be available. Am I just too early? Is the Centos Extras repository not quite ready for Centos 5 yet? Or is there a technical reason why the Fedora Extras RPMs can't be rebuilt for Centos? Or do I need to configure yum for a different repository? if I have to rebuild the RPMs myself, then I'm quite happy to do that. I just wondered if they would become available automatically if I waited a while. There's no real hurry to get this server up. Cheers, Dave...

adsl-set up (solved)

A few days ago I wrote complaining that my new, cheap Compaq Presario (sr5010nx) could not create and maintain a dsl connection using Centos5. I was puzzled that that Ubuntu - with pppoeconf - would work just fine but Centos5 could not be configured. (cento4 -also) Eventually I googled and found a bug report for the r8169 Gigabit ethernet driver. Conclusion - there is a patch in new kernels - I tried the Centos 2.6.18 kernel - again no results - and finally I installed a fc6-2.6.20 kernel - problem solved. -----------------gary
