centos4 server, centosplus and perl update

Greetings One production box we have deployed is a yum current centos 4.4 Im thinking we should move to perl 5.8.8 in regards to Spamassassin among some other items... Would someone please tell me from experience if do the command below of yum --enablerepo=centosplus update perl* Q: will I get everything I need for this exercise or should I be looking to get some other supporting packages from the centosplus repo as well? Oracle instantclient on CentOS 4.4 with DBD::Oracle

Does anyone have experience on installing the Oracle instantclient and DBD::Oracle on CentOS 4.4. I have been having several issues with getting the RPMs from Oracle's site working with DBD::Oracle. I can get the oracle instant client to install without issue. But I cannot compile/install DBD::Oracle using cpan or cpan2rpm. I found http://freshrpms.net/docs/oracle/ which has a nosrc rpm for the oracle instant client but I cannot find the ZIP files that are referenced in the SPEC file as Oracle has released a new version. When I try to build perl-DBD-Oracle-1.16-4.el4.src.rpm from that page it errors out...When I try to install perl-DBD-Oracle-1.16-4.el4.i386.rpm it says it cannot locate the .so files that the instantclient installed although I know they are there. I am not sure where that package is assuming the files should be so I cannot symlink them. Any assistance would be wonderful. Thanks! -- Matt Martz CentOS Mirror Admin mdmartz(a)gflug.net

Screensavers for CentOS 5.0

Probably a stupid question, but here goes anyway. Are there any other screensavers available besides the four supplied in the release? Or is there a way to use the ones that came with 4.4 in 5.0?.... Lost file associations, only application/octet-stream

Hi, After updating from CentOS 4.92 to 5 through manual hacks and 'yum update' (see http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-April/079023.html), I've lost all gnome file associations. Now every file is identified as application/octet-stream or text/plain or x-directory/normal (for directories). I've checked everything with 'rpm -Va' but couldn't find problem related to mime types. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Leonardo

CentOS Install From Scratch on XFS File System

I'm thinking about switching to CentOS 4.4 x86_64 from another RH based version. However, I need to install it from scratch and I need EVERYTHING (including /boot & /) on XFS file systems. Does the default installer allow this? If not, how difficult would it be to make the necessary changes. Problems running programs compiled unter Centos 5 on Centos 4 machines

I know this is quite a handwaving, stupid question, but I don't know where else to ask it and maybe somebody here can at least point me into the right direction, because I'm stuck. I have a program package that were using here (OpenFOAM for those who know it). My problem is that when I compile and link this package on CentOS 5, it won't run on CentOS 4.x-machines but stops with a floating-point-exception. The funny thing is that my experiments with strace and gdb indicate that the problems occur during the loading of an .so (that does not belong to the package). I was able to remove that so from the build, the program then failed with similar symptoms at another library. Has anyone here seen similar behaviour and what would be a possible solution? (to compile under 5 in such a way that it runs on 4) My problem is, that moving all machines to CentOS 5 is not possible, because our cluster-solution (Rocks) is based on 4. Any hints (how trivial they may appear to you) are most welcome.

Scripting question

I'm writing a script that has logging via a simple routine: LogIt() { Msg="$1" echo "$THISSCRIPT: $Msg" echo "$Msg" >>$LogFile } #A portion of this script sends a file via ftp: # ftp -vn >$tempfile <<$$EOD : : $$EOD #Then reads the temporary file to log while read line do LogIt $line Done <$tempfile rm -f $tempfile -------------------------------------- All worked fine when I tested the ftp to a temporary file and reading it back to log the output, but once I created it as a cron entry (or so it seems) it now seems to take each line up to the first space: Connected 220-TCP/IP Copyright 220 Remote 331 230 250 200 local: 227 150-About : : See anything I'm doing wrong....any better way of handling this? Eventually found reference to a problem with tcp_window_scaling and firewalls and after disabling tcp_window_scaling on my test CentOS 5 box, everything started working. The install does not get far enough for the shell console to be available, it hangs at the transferring stage2.img. Dean
