Anyway you'r certainly curious about the problem :-) This is a problem about ARP request. Maybe another machine with low activity share the same IP or your swith/hub is badly configured ! You can use arping to detect any device with the same IP and tcpdump to look for arp request."arp -an" will show you the arp table. I observed that when I ping the server from other machine, it replies but from time to time displays time-out. We use this server for our mail and proxy so it is affecting us when time outs occur. Error trying to install Ktorrent

Hi... I was trying to install Ktorrent in my centos 4 x64 (i use kde) and when I typed './configure' i get this error message: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.3 and < 4.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support! Weird NFS problem

I have a weird NFS problem here. I am trying to set up a machine with Centos 5 on it. First time I've tried Centos, but it looks like it's going to be the real thing for some machines that I look after that are intended to be long-term "just works" application servers. I plan to start reading and participating in this mailing list now, so Hello to everyone! My name is Frank Cox and I own and operate the Melville Theatre in Melville Saskatchewan, Canada. My first attempt to install Centos 5 was from ISO files that I put on my fileserver, which is the method that I use to install Fedora. Boot off a boot CD, point it to the appropriate directrory on the fileserver, and let 'er rip. That didn't work this time. I got to the point where I told the boot CD where to find the ISO files on the fileserver, and the whole thing hung up. I found an error message on one of the consoles that said something to the effect of "server fileserver not responding, still trying". And that's as far as I got. I tried this a half-dozen times with the same result. I thought maybe it just didn't like my fileserver for some reason, so I put the ISO files on another of my computers and set up an NFS share on that computer. Same thing again. I gave up and put Centos 5 onto CD's, booted from CD number 1 and just swapped CD's until I'm done. I thought that solved everything but now I have something even weirder. I mounted my fileserver like this: mount fileserver:/nas/NASDisk-00002/files /mnt/fileserver That's exactly the same way that I mount it on my Fedora machines. The fileserver mounts without error, and it appears at first glance to work. I can "cd /mnt/fileserver/where-ever" and use ls to view the files that are in the directories. However, if I try to read the files on the fileserver, my terminal hangs up. All I can do is view the directories on my fileserver. Doing anything that reads any file on the fileserver locks up my terminal. Logging in again from another terminal and viewing /var/log/messages tells me this: nfs: server fileserver not responding, still trying This appears to be the same problem that I had when I was installing the operating system. Normally if the installer can't find the NFS share due to a typo or whatever, it just tells me "Can't find the images" and that's all there is to it. But the installer hung up at the point where it was supposed to start reading the images so I think it could find them but couldn't read them either. This exact same procedure works fine from my Fedora machines. What in the world is going on here? If I can't get NFS to work on this machine I'm going to be up the creek because I use LTSP on it to run several terminals. I haven't tried web browsing from that machine yet, but the ethernet card is obviously working because I did a "yum update" and a few "yum installs" with no problem. It is an Intel motherboard and CPU with integrated everything. I strongly suspect that I'm doing something stupid here and can't see the obvious. Can someone give me a steer? searching for yum packages necessary for mail gateway

I'm looking for the Red Hat equivalent of this Debian statement "apt-get –y install postfix mailscanner spamassassin bind9 clamav ssh webmin webmin-core logwatch libspf2-0 libmail-spf-query-perl" "yum search" can't find some of the packages. Is there some sort of online DB or something that I can search through to see which repository I need to enable for some of those programs?

Openoffice 2.3 on centos 5 issue

I have just install OOo 2.3 on new centos 5 box. However OO keep open registration wizard everytime launched, even though i already select "i do not want to register". I've been playing with "$HOME/.openoffice.org2/" but still no luck. This problem did not happen on FC6, so i guess its not OOo bug. --beast

Checking how many DIMM slots are in use

Hi, I'm wondering if there's a method for doing any of these 1. Check what's the physical memory available. free -m shows ~768 mem but I was sure that I had 1G of memory in there. 2. I check the kernel and it seems like the 4G split is in effect so it should map / correctly recognise there's 1G of Mem there. Is there any way to check besides opening up the machine to look at it physically??

fstab problem after a failed drive

Everyone, I installed a sata drive on a SuperMicro with SCSI drives. No problem with the installation. Everything went as expected as the os recognized the drive and assigned /dev/sdc to the new 300 gig Seagate drive. I had planned to use this drive for backup tarballs. The drive had been functional for about a week with no problems. Apparently it went out today when I tried to reboot the system. Now the boot process brings the system up into repair mode, but mounts the / partition in "read only" status. I can see that the original /dev/sdc is present but /dev/sdc1 is not present. I removed the drive completely and predictably /dev/sdc is no longer present. The problem I have now is that I have an entry in /etc/fstab that references the disabled drive that I am unable to change because I can only get to /etc/fstab in "read only" status. I am sure there is way to remove the entry to /dev/sdc1 but I have not been able to do so. Any help would be appreciated Greg Ennis

CentOS 5.0 crash (cifs bug ?)

Hi I think I hit the cifs bug described at http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/WindowsShares and http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1776 As CentOS Wiki said, CentOS 5.0 do have a bug fixed cifs.ko, so I thought it should be in CentOSPlus repository ... so I upgrade my kernel and using 2.6.18-8.1.10.el5.centos.plus. X11 virtual screens on centos 5

When the you select an X11 virtual screen (1 of 4) with the mouse on default centos 5 what command gets executed to show screen 1, screen 2 etc... Basically, I want to have a command or know the command to execute to show the desired virtual X11 screen. Thanks, Jerry
