Changing from text bootup to graphical one

When I installed CentOS it was with an old monitor, and it turned out that I could not get system-config-display to set it up correctly. I bought a new monitor and now all is well, except... It still boots to a text login, and I have to startx. What do I need to edit to change this? Thanks Anne

Can I remove X11 while keeping LSB compatibility?

Hi all, I have a Cent OS 5 box with a fairly full install which I'm trying to strip down. Since this machine will be running headless I would like to remove all of the X11 stuff which is installed on it. However, it seems that the "redhat-lsb" package, which I would like to keep, is dependent on X11 - redhat-lsb depends on /usr/bin/lpr - /usr/bin/lpr is provided by cups - cups depends on paps - paps depends on pango - pango depends on libX11 Is it possible to safely break this dependancy chain so that I keep redhat-lsb while removing X11? I'm trying to keep all of my package management restricted to 'yum' and I certainly want to avoid 'rpm -- nodeps'. Looking at /etc/alternatives/ makes me think there must be another package besides cups which provides /usr/bin/lpr but I can't seem to find it. I won't be doing any printing from this machine so I would even be happy with a dummy /usr/bin/lpr which simply throws away anything it receives. Thanks, - Richard

Problems logging out....

I just started having some trouble logging out from my CentOS 5.1 system. For some reason, when I try to log out, the log out program hangs. This happens whether I click on the "Log Out" button or wait for the timeout. When I looked, I somehow (I forget how) found out that the clock applet would not go away. However, when I separately killed the clock applet, the session still refused to log out. The only way I could get the session logged out was to kill the gnome-session process (works like a charm). I thought this might be related to the new xorg server update problem from upstream, but the new one doesn't fix it (not surprised). Any clues, or is this a gnome-only issue? Thanks. mhr

Hi all, I have been out of the linux / unix loop for a good three years now, and a lot has changed.. I have a windows 2003 server on my home office lan as my domain controller. I would like to know if there is a good how-to that applies to Centos5 to achieve the following: Joining the centos machine to the AD domain (I believe I have done this already) Sharing files from it using the AD user object credentials (don't know how to do this yet, using system-config-samba-1.2.39, it does not show the domain users yet) Allowing login to centos using ssh or NX client (got the NX client working for root user and a local tesuser) using the <DOMAIN>\<windowsusername> credentials Correct configuration of the pam related files etc so that centos automatically creates and populates a user home directory for any first time logins I found the following article: http://www.nixadmins.net/modules.php?page=0%2C0 <http://www.nixadmins.net/modules.php?page=0%2C0&name=News&file=article&sid= 14> &name=News&file=article&sid=14 But I am a bit wary of editing files that I don't fully understand yet. Booting from Compact Flash

Hi all, Advance apologies if this is OT; if so, please mail me offlist. A client is considering using CentOS5.1 for an embedded project. They will be booting from Compact Flash. The CF in the device is being controlled by a VIA VT6421 SATA/RAID controller. Are there drivers available or must we truly 'roll our own' when compiling the 2.6x kernel for this? I've done some searching in the archives and on the site, but to no avail Also, are there any pitfalls we should be aware of up front? (any experience here is better than ours at this point!) Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, -Ray

centos authentication via ldap produces no name shell prompt

Hello, I'm trying to set up centos 5.1 to authenticate against an openldap server. I've got the authentication working, in that i can log in as a user contained within the ldap database but not in the system passwd/group files. The problem is instead of a prompt that for example looks like this: (username)@hostname:~/$ i'm getting this: (I have no name)@hostname:~/$ Aside from this everything works, i can finger, use id, etc. It's annoying and i'm thinking it might be a symptom of a misconfiguration. HowTo Recover Lost Data from LVM RAID1 ?

Guys, The other day while working on my old workstation it got frozen and after reboot I lost almost all data unexpectedly. I have a RAID1 configuration with LVM. 2 IDE HDDs. md0 .. store /boot (100MB) -------------------------- /dev/hda2 /dev/hdd1 md1 .. store / (26GB) -------------------------- /dev/hda3 /dev/hdd2 The only info that still rest in was that, that I restore after the fresh install. It seems that the disk were with problems and weren't syncing :(. This computer is old, Celeron 800MHz, 256MB of RAM and IDE disk too. I know that I have to suffer the consequences but if you know some way to recover some data, I'll appreciate it very much. These days I have been reading about: mdamd, and some way to recover but no success. I tried to boot from rescue mode with CentOS 5 first CD and do an fsck to /dev/hda3 and /dev/hdd2. After this something about superblock was told to me and that use the command e2fsck -b 8123 <device> (I don't remember the number exactly) but no success either. Do you have some idea what we can do to recover the data on m1 ? Thanks guys, Cheers, al.

Better recovery

Hi, Yesterday I upgraded to latest X release and immediately after installing it before the X restart, my computer froze. when I rebooted it could not reboot with: raid1:sda2: rescheduling sector 185xyz.... The problem was my raid drives was bad. I recovered the data with SystemRescueCD. I use 2x500Gb software raid. simple script idea

Hi there... Foolish me.... all was going sooooooo well and then I got a wild hair and updated to the latest clamav .92 today. It is possible I should have just done an rpm update install yet there were some changes in ClamAV lately and I didn't know how well that would go. up till now I spec'd and rolled my own Clamav RPMs without milter somewhat recently ClamAV changed from having a clamav-server RPM file to not having it so I went to the magnificent Dag repo and snagged what I needed I did a yum remove and then a yum localinstall What I didn't think about was that the clamav user and group would be deleted and then re-created... which I think poor package management design, yet what do I know. Anyways, would some kind soul point me in the right direction or help me create a script that will traverse the proper parts of the filesystem and grep for files with UID and/or GID 46 please? Ive been fighting this for a coupla hours just scrounging around and fixing what I knew needed to be chown'd based upon errors in the logfiles etc... ;-> Phew!!! Thanks for pointers in advance - rh

modprobe.conf and ipv6

Greetings, Are these still valid modprobe.conf for centos 5 ? alias net-pf-10 off alias ipv6 off Secondly, Are they still valid in centos 5 for the same reasons we put them in the modprobe.conf for centos 4 ? The centos wiki says yes. It used to be a "speedup" issue in centos 4 among other things if I recall correctly. What I don't understand is, if you turn off ipv6 on the NICs, why do we have to do this in modprobe.conf? Thank you in advance. - rh
