centos ldap client authentication

Hello, I've got a FreeBSD openldap server set up and i'd like to authenticate to it with a centos 5.1 client. The server is also acting as a client itself and user access works fine from it. On the clientside I'm getting an error can not search ldap server, server is unavailable. This is with pam_ldap. I'm using tls encryption. On the client if i do: ldapsearch -xZ i get every entry in my directory. And if i do: ldapsearch -xZ -L '(uid=user)' i get a specific user out of it, so i'm concluding the error is in my /etc/ldap.conf file. I've added ldap to my nsswitch.conf file clientside to the passwd, shadow, and group lines. On the server i'm seeing a tls negotiation failure error msg and the client as i said can not search ldap server. Thanks. Dave.

Newer MySQL in centos-plus?

Hi List, I'm noticing that the CentOS-plus repo for 4.6 has MySQL 5.0.54 in it, but the CentOS 5.1 repo does not have a newer rpm, leaving the "newest" easily-available version as the vendor-provided mysql 5.0.22. Is there a reason for this? We're wanting to try a newer MySQL under CentOS 5.1 -- do any of the standard repos include such an RPM? Thanks! -Jeff

/etc/resolv.conf - Number of Nameservers

What is the maximum number of nameservers mentioned in /etc/resolv.conf which will be queried while looking up a hostname or IP address in the present version ? Earlier implementations had a ceiling of 3 name servers which could be queried. Has there been any increase ? Thanks, Manish

Anyone installed the amazon downloader on 5.1?

Just tried to install the Amazon-downloader on Centos 5.1 (the Fedora 8 version, which seems the closest match of any they offer). Of course it gets a bazillion unfulfilled dependencies. so I tried "yum localinstall ./a*m" and it trundles along for a while finding several of the packages available then spews out this: Error: Missing Dependency: libboost_date_time.so.3 is needed by package amazonmp3 Error: Missing Dependency: libboost_signals.so.3 is needed by package amazonmp3 Error: Missing Dependency: libboost_iostreams.so.3 is needed by package amazonmp3 Error: Missing Dependency: libboost_thread-mt.so.3 is needed by package amazonmp3 Error: Missing Dependency: libcurl.so.4 is needed by package amazonmp3 Can anyone point me to a repo where I could find these? Or other tricks for getting this to work? pdflatex: fuzzy fonts in Evince, but not on paper output

Hi, I've been using LaTeX for a few years on Mac OS X, and I'd like to use it on CentOS now. I installed a complete environment using 'yum groupinstall "Authoring and Publishing"' and then installing tetex-xdvi, plus manually installing the 'memoir' class. I can run 'latex document.tex' ok: the resulting .dvi looks nice in xdvi. When running 'dvips -o document.dvi', I get a .ps file that I can view OK in Evince. But when I run 'pdflatex document.tex', the fonts in the resulting PDF are all ragged and fuzzy... though the print output is OK. I thought I'd rather post this question here, since the answer is probably distribution-specific. Any suggestions? Niki

Unable open raw socket in CentOS 5 - SE Linux and kernel capability interaction?

I am wondering what is the interaction between SE Linux and the kernel "capabilities" in CentOS 5.1? I'm trying to open a raw socket and keep getting permission denied errors. I've tried using the lcap library to find that CAP_SETPCAP appears to be off in the kernel. For compliance reasons, I don't want to turn this on. I've also tried a hand-crafted SE Linux module policy. I have verified that the test program runs in the correct SE Linux domain and it generates no audit errors, but it still fails to open the port with permission denied. It appears that SE Linux is not preventing the socket being created (as evidenced by the lack of audit messages), so what am I missing? Do I still need to modify capabilities within the program, even if I'm using an SE Linux policy? OpenOffice won't start up

Hi, I just ran an install of OpenOffice 2.31 on Centos 5.1 using these instructions - http://www.melvilletheatre.com/articles/openoffice-fedora/index.html Install seemed to go fine until I finished and then tried to start up K writer and none of the OO apps will start up from the menu. even though they are all showing up in start menu that 2.3 is installed. I'm using KDE mostly but have gnome installed also. Can anyone give me an idea as to how to correct? Problem getting Java Runtime Environment installed into OpenOffice

Hi, I'm having trouble getting my new install of OpenOffice 2.31 to find my newly installed Java Runtime Environment version jre1.6.0_04 (downloaded from Sun). I tried installing it via Tools>Options>Java (am using OpenOffice Calc to try to set it up). The options dialog box is finding the Free Software Foundation version 1.4.2, but it won't find the new JRE file. I tried clicking on Add and tried just about every directory I could think of and it's just not finding the JRE. I believe after doing a search, that the newly installed JRE is located in the /usr/java/jre1.6.0_04 directory, and went to that dir in the options dialog box in Calc, and tried every dir and sub dir in that main dir, and Calc is still is not seeing it. Can anyone please give me an idea as to how to find JRE and get it plugged in to OpenOffice? _________________________________________________________________ Climb to the top of the charts! yum update best practices

Hello, we run approximately 400 Centos servers at our company. We use cfengine for configuration management. I am looking for some documentation to do patching including kernel patches. I was thinking of just having each host run yum update via cfengine but not sure if there are any gotchas there? Should I just do yum update? or should i exclude the kernel and be more careful with those? how about glibc? I am wondering what other people out there do with such large installations. I'd very much appreciate any help or suggestions on this. Also, kinda related to the above is my question about the correct yum behavior when installing kernels. I've seen it sometimes make the new kernel the default in grub.conf but sometimes it doesnt? what is the designed behavior? best regards, SK
