I have port 143 open so that I can get my mail when away from home. Occasionally, though, my router reports things like Thu, 2008-03-27 02:00:11 - TCP Packet - Source:200.122.134.9,3821 Destination:88.97.17.41,143 - [IMAP rule match] Thu, 2008-03-27 05:39:49 - TCP Packet - Source:140.127.181.141,3461 Destination:88.97.17.41,143 - [IMAP rule match] Thu, 2008-03-27 16:10:03 - TCP Packet - Source:80.88.161.125,2352 Destination:88.97.17.41,143 - [IMAP rule match] Looking at those addresses in whois, I don't see any good reason for these, and I'm concerned in case they are relays. Advice? Anne

how do I run something on a newly installed server, on it's 1st boot only?

Hi all I'm busy with a kickstart file to automate server installations, and I need to run a bash script right after the server has been installed for the first time. But the script only needs to run once, and it needs to run automatically. questions on kickstart

I have 2 questions dealing with 2 different kickstart files. 1) my kickstart sections for RAID disk setup and kickstart reports it cannot find sda. Why is that. sda is there and works. clearpart --all --initlabel part raid.01 --asprimary --bytes-per-inode=4096 --fstype="raid" --onpart=sda1 --size=20000 part swap --asprimary --bytes-per-inode=4096 --fstype="swap" --onpart=sda2 --size=4000 part raid.02 --bytes-per-inode=4096 --fstype="raid" --grow --onpart=sda3 --size=1 part raid.03 --asprimary --bytes-per-inode=4096 --fstype="raid" --onpart=sdb1 --size=20000 part swap --asprimary --bytes-per-inode=4096 --fstype="swap" --onpart=sdb2 --size=4000 part raid.04 --asprimary --bytes-per-inode=4096 --fstype="raid" --grow --onpart=sdb3 --size=1 raid / --bytes-per-inode=4096 --device=md0 --fstype="ext3" --level=1 raid.01 raid.03 raid / --bytes-per-inode=4096 --device=md1 --fstype="ext3" --level=1 raid.02 raid.04 2) my kickstart section for normally single disk setup. However with 2 disks present in box it put / on sda and /home on sdb. Is there a way to put it ALL on sda??? arp_filter

Hello all, I have an annoying networking issue. The value of arp_filter is getting changed. /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/eth0/arp_filter 1 I specifically set it to 0 via /sbin/ifup-local. The hosts in question are setup to test some network gear, and they all have 1 "management" interface and 1 or more through put interface. mysql-server installing...or not`

Hi all, I've got a clean CentOS 5.1 install and need php/mysql support. Seems mysql (client) is installed, but I need server, so I did yum install mysql-server and got the errors posted below. Have I missed something or is there a problem with this package? Commandline utility to edit ID3 tags?

Hi, I'm running a webradio on our brandnew CentOS 5.1 database server. (The main purpose of this radio is fun, sure, but it's also a bit like a canary in a coalmine...) It's based on Icecast, MPD and NCMPC and works great. I'm configuring the server remotely via SSH, no X. Is there any commandline utility to edit ID3 tags? Cheers, Niki

USB printer stops working?

I have recently attached a USB to my centos 5.1 NAS server. The printer works for about 5 minutes after the box has started but after that it stops working. CUPS says the device is busy. If I print stuff, reboot the server and go into cups it mentions an error about HAL failing, i click start printer anyway and all the documents I have printed will be printed. Someone mentioned it might be USB power saving, if this is the case how do i turn it off? Alan

OpenGL and CAD Apps

I am likely going to switch a desktop over from Windows to either CentOS or Fedora and run two CAD apps that now have Linux ports. I was wondering as I can't seem to find much specific info about the support of OpenGL in RH based OS's. Does CentOS support this out of the box or do I need to do anything with it? Anyone doing this, or know of a definitive resource to point me towards? Thanks! jlc

Deleting file in /tmp directory

Hi, This is a bit of-topic, but since it has to do with /tmp permissions here it goes. Anyway, I'm sorry in advance for posting this. I have this PHP script (simplificated here), called delete_tmp.php that basically calls external commands: <?php $session_file = '/tmp/sess_89765' system(''rm -f' . ' ' . $session_file); ?> delete_tmp.php file is owned by gamito.users /tmp/sess_89765 file has permissions -rw------ and is owned by gamito.users My /tmp permissions are rwxrwxrwt and is owned by root.root I know that the the sticky bit only allows files to be deleted by their owners, the owner of the directory or by root. Never the less, i can switch to /tmp directory and delete sess_89765 file as user gamito. If I run: $ php delete_tmp.php as root, it deletes sess_89765 file. But if I do the same has user gamito, it doesn't delete the file !!! Ideas ? Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, Mário Gamito
