using conf.d files to override options in httpd.conf

Like many of you, I like to avoid modifying /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf as much as possible. Instead, modifying or adding files in /etc/httpd/conf.d However, because /var/www/html is declared within the main httpd.conf and certain directives are set along with "AllowOverride None" (thus forbidding use of .htaccess), it seems like the only way to override any of these options is to modify httpd.conf directly. If nothing else, at least setting "AllowOverride" to something besides None. Is that correct? Or does anyone know of a way to leave httpd.conf pristine, yet still override or set directives for /var/www/html? johnn

there is no priorities.conf file

Hi I am new to Linux. I need to use YUM to install Software. raid1 custom initrd and yum

OK sorry to hammer the list but one more question - having almost got the drives mirrored and happy - since I have created a custom initrd that has the raid1 drivers in it, do I now have to tell yum to ignore kernel updates? Will the stock kernel render me unbootable? Actually I am not 100% sure the initrd I created # mkinitrd -f --preload=raid1 /mnt/tmp/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r` is even being used, because lsmod still lists a raid1 module. Wouldn't it be "embedded" in the running kernel and thus not in the module list? either way I am a little confused and this is important ;) best regards and thanks to all for the help, Sam

Icon .png file loading error after graphics driver upgrade

Dear, I updated my nvidia graphics driver on one of the CentOS boxes. When I log in my account, icons are not displayed correctly. They are displayed as small empty squares, and there are error messages like "Fater error: failed to load <file name>.png : version error" for each icon. If I log in as super user, everything is OK. Icons are OK. No error messages. Do you have any idea? Thank you. -john

raid 1 ( mirroring ) after installation

DNS in CentOS

Hello, Am running Bind 9 in Cent OS 5.1. I have a DNS server, that: - DNS server to hosts in lab.company.com - 192.168.17.x - forwards query to company.com - 10.100.x.x. Problem: 1. FQDN and by-IP-address ping and nslookup is successful. 2. ping/nslookup by host-name-only --- from any 192.168.17.x hosts to any 10.100.x.x hosts fail and vice versa. I have setup the DNS of lab.company.com - to forward query to the DNS server of 10.100.x.x.hosts through the /etc/named.conf - options { listen-on port 53 { 127.0.0.1; 10.100.1.5; }; forwarders { 10.100.1.5 port 53; }; What tools/logs can I check to troubleshoot this? should I be configuring this as a forwarder or should I configure my DNS as a subdomain to the company.com DNS? pls advise. -- best, Vince

Applications staying open in Gnome

CentOs 5.1 updated with Gnome as desktop. I notice that after a reboot some applications reappear mysteriously. It seems that the last application that was closed *before* reboot reappears. For instance I had gedit appearing for some time, opened with a blank "unknown document". Now I'm getting the hardware manager/soundcard section opened on the desktop each time I reboot because that was the last application I had open *and* closed a few reboots ago. I haven't tried many other applications as I do not use many. Applications that do not behave like this are terminal and the file manager. They appear like normal on the screen if they were open before the reboot. The only oddity about them is that if two of them were open only one reappears and terminal never opens on the position it was before. That may be a shortcoming of the Gnome window manager. Problem with dhcpd and bootp

In order of making it easier to differentiate between existing clients and clients that I bring up only for installation and configuration I tried the following configuration. subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { pool { range 192.168.1.101 192.168.1.150; default-lease-time 86400; max-lease-time 604800; } pool { range dynamic-bootp 192.168.1.151 192.168.1.180; default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 86400; next-server 192.168.1.231; filename "pxelinux.0"; } } in the hope that bootp-clients would get an IP from the second IP range. Documentation of dhcpd doesn't say if using two pools in one subnet is actually allowed. It works. Sort of. Many hardware clients, clients from VMWare server and from xen get an IP from the second range and pxe-boot. But there are clients who should pxe-boot but get the first IP number and won't pxe-boot. An example are HP Proliant DL140 servers. Can I do it different, so it works for all clients? Does the HP server use another method than bootp for getting the boot image?
