[OT]: Passing password for a command on the fly

Hi, First things first, sorry for the off-topic, but I've already burned my eyes Googling and couldn't find the answer to what I need and I remembered asking here, because I'm a long time CentOS and its mailing list user. Again, my apologies. I have this command to create an FTP account: # pure-pw useradd mario -u 502 -g 502 -n 1000 -N 200 -d /home/pages/mario This command asks for the password twice. I need to pass the password (preferably without expect) so I can create the account without prompting. If i run: # echo secret | pure-pw useradd mario -u 502 -g 502 -n 1000 -N 200 -d /home/pages/gamito It reads the first insertion, but asks for the second. I knew how to do this a long time ago, but I've forgotten and couldn't find anything useful on Google. Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, Mário Gamito

i'm attempting to rebuild centos51 kernel-xen. OT DNS Question

Hi Everyone, I am currently reviewing the DNS records for the organization I work for and have one area I would like other peoples thoughts on. Would there ever be a situation where you need to have multiple A records pointing to the same IP Address? Currently we have a small number of cases where one IP Address has multiple A Records. This seems like a bad idea to me and I would replace these records with cnames. But I am meeting resistance to this. As far as I can think right now if you have one correctly configured A record with a matching reverse entry and then use cnames there shouldn't be any cases where you must add a second A record. Or am I missing something ?

php-pear - required files - which rpm

Hi I am tying to install a php based application but the error i recieve is Failed opening required 'HTML/Template/IT.php' This is something to do with pear from what i can tell but i do have php-pear installed. The file IT.php is not on my system but does anyone know what rpm this would come from? thanks

Replacing Qpopper with Dovecot

I currently have a Centos server with Sendmail and Qpopper supporting about 50 mail users. I am planning to replace Qpopper with Dovecot to allow some users to have IMAP access to their mail (others will still use POP3.) Is there anything special to be aware of in setting up this migration? Thanks for your comments. Gerald

Hi, I'm looking for a monitoring system that support snmp v3. I want to monitorize linux servers and network switches. Currently, I am trying to use zabbix, but sadly, it lack at present features that I need. For example, I want to get reporting screens with data and graphs from network switches, I'd like to configure one only port of a given switch and that is used as templates for the rest of switch ports and the rest of the switches. I'd like to use some open source software that meet that features, and I want to avoid Nagios :) Could you recommend me someone? Tape operation

Hi all, My only encounter with tape-backup was with Windows 2000. With it, when we backup things using windows' backup tool, it will create a 'catalog', then the catalog contains all the backup operations we do based on date. So, with this we can "append" many backups into one tape. Next time we want to restore a backup, we can choose what date available in that particular tape. I have zero experience with tape on Linux. I've been googling around and it seems that the backup operation is very different. For example: - The tape is 400GB (LTO-3) - The data is only 10GB Some of the articles I read imply that 1 tape contains 1 backup-file only. CMIIW. This is certainly not very efficient. The commands used are: mt, either tar, cpio. My question is: 1. How do I use that one tape of 400GB to store 39 archives of backup into it in Linux? 2. Is tape backup seen by Linux just like any other filesystem? Can we mount it and 'ls -l' it? 3. When to rewind, forward, why? 4. Wel will only backup data/files (not the entire filesystem), is it enough to use the software provided by the tape vendor, or do I need another software? Or just the mt command will do it? Any URL, scripts, insight are very welcome. Probably already answered, but kermit isn't open source.
