I doubt you can do it. Besides requiring IE, you also have to download and run a Windows based viewer. "yum update" did not update kernel on one box

This morning, I did "yum update" on my wife's box. It did not update the kernel. I ran the command again, and there is a response that no updates are available. Her box is a Compaq Evo D300v Celeron. During the past couple of days, when I did "yum update", on my daughters box and mine (Dell Dimensions), the kernel was updated and in the GRUB menus now, there are two (2) Linux kernels to choose from, as well as the Win XP option, since these are all dual boot boxes. How can I update the kernel on the Compaq Evo so it has an up to date kernel? TIA!

read only root file system

I am looking at having a read only box, it will not use a swap partition. Well, i tried two possibilities years ago.. 1.) : There are SCSI-Disks with jumpers for "Write Protect" , so you have a real Hardware write-protection. 2.) : Have a look at (Open)BSD's "Immutable Flag"-Feature. (Well, i hope you all love OpenBSD?) ;-) But....don't get nervous while setting up the box... Regards Marc Rebischke

RH9 to centos 5 386

I am testing the likelyhood of updating a couple RH9 systems to centos 5 386. I found at document that talked about updating to centos 4. steps being: 1.) backup 2.) rpm --import http://pubmirrors.reflected.net/centos/5/os/i386/RPM-GPG-KEY-centOS-5 rpm -Uvh --nodeps http://pubmirrors.reflected.net/centos/5/os/i386/CentOS/yum-3.0.5-1.el5.cen… rpm -i --nodeps --force http://pubmirrors.reflected.net/centos/5/os/i386/CentOS/centos-release-5-1.… yum upgrade Everything was progressing until I did tte "yum upgrade" I got an error about not finding a yum package. "There was a problem importing one of the python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum" What do I do now... Thanks, Jerry

Archive-to-DVD

Hi folks, Here's the situation. I have a group of engineers who love to save things to disk. Now that the filer is getting full, they are interested in archiving some of those things to DVD. The tress containing the things they want to archive are specified like so: /path/path/path/A/04?? /path/path/path/B/04?? /path/path/path/A/05?? /path/path/path/B/05?? /path/path/path/A/06?? /path/path/path/B/06?? ...and there are things in A and B which do not match the specifications. The total amount of data in this specificaiton is around 30GB, and this is not distributed equally through the specification. What I'm hoping for is a program that I can feed in directory specifications like the above, and it will produce for me DVD images (.iso files) containing these trees in such a format that when the engineers want file $X, I can give them the DVD (or the whole stack, if required) and say "there you go" without having to go through a restore process. I don't want something which creates it's own archive format which spans the DVDs (ie split-tar or ufsdump). I would settle for a program that produces a list of files such that I can create DVD images on my own. We have CentOS Forums here: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/ Akemi Yagi (toracat on IRC) and Fabian Arrotin (arrfab on IRC) are the Forum Moderators. There are a lot of posts there that I find helpful when doing web searches ... but we could use more people answering questions there.
