Reg. VNC server and Windows and Centos interworking

Hi all, I have a Windows XP PC and a Centos PC (Centos 4.3 release, kernel- 2.6.9-34.EL) which are in the same LAN. Currently, I am able to use VNC server on the centos to view the Windows PC, but not able to view the Centos PC from the Windows PC. This applies for even file sharing also. The samba server is running and I can view the windows network from Centos PC but in the Windows network, not able to view the Centos PC. Also not able to print from Centos to the LAN printer. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You, Padmaja

NFS options on kernel parameters

Hello, I am running an NFS server/PXE on a Cent OS 5.1 server. I have defined an NFS export with "no_root_squash" option in my /etc/exports file: # # NFS Export Files # /export/images *(rw,sync,no_root_squash) ... A client PXE boots as a diskless station to the above server into a root-NFS directory underneath the above /export/images export. When the client boots; the NFS export is NOT root-Squashing - whenever I touch a file, it is created as user nobody and NOT root. I would like to NFS root-squash the root directory. I believe that I am missing to pass a parameter in my kernel - (defined in .. /pxelinux.cfg/default) .. currently my kernel parameters are: APPEND root=/dev/nfs rw nfsroot=192.1.2.5:/export/images/root-fs ip=dhcp ... would anyone be kind to provide advise on how I can mount my client so that I am ensure that the "no_root_squash" setting is enabled? thanks in advace. -- best, Vince

Hello, Last night I upgraded a server to CentOS 5.2. The server has 16GB of RAM. How much memory is available? Is this a known issue?

Is there a FC8 update repo out there?

So I need python 2.5.1, and all of its dependecies. And 2.5.1 is at least in FC8. So this leads to wanting to try to do the update right via yum, thus needing a repo. Does such a thing exist? I find a directory out there, but no repodata directory with it: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/fedora/updates/testing/8/

pnm2ppa gone, in any repo?

I can't get my HP DeskJet 712C to print via cups. I believe the reason is that according to http://www.redhat.com/archives/epel-devel-list/2007-May/msg00002.html the pnm2ppa filter got dropped between RHEL 4 and RHEL 5, or between Fedora 6 and RHEL 5, depending on how you look at it. Foomatic still generates the pnm2ppa.xml file, but there is no pnm2ppa binary filter installed, so any print attempt ends with an error message. I don't find that any repo I have installed has picked this up for x86_64 architecture. Do I need to add a repo? Has this not been an issue for enough people that someone has made it available from a repo? Right now this has been a show-stopper on upgrading from Centos 4 to 5, as it is hard to use the workstation without a printer. Any help appreciated. Ted Miller Indiana, USA

Latest samaba updates

When I let yum install the latest samba updates, it ate my smb users file and smb.conf. Once I restored those, it gave me several selinux avc denials, one of which I can't clear up. See http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2965 for details. Anyone else having problems like this? Dave

make rpm for kernel

I am compiling a custom kernel. When I do a make oldconfig, and then make rpm, I get a kernel rpm. The problem is I am not getting the initrd image. Is this normal? TIA

Iptables not blocking UDP port 53

I'm attempting to block access to port 53 from internet hosts for an internal server. This device is behind a gateway router so all traffic appears to come from source ip 10.100.1.1. Here are my (non-working) iptables rules: -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j REJECT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s 10.100.1.1 -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j REJECT Further down the ruleset I have these rules to allow traffic from everyone else. If these rules are removed then nobody can make queries, because of the final default REJECT rule. -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m udp -p udp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT I have used tcpdump and confirmed that packets are in fact still coming across from internet hosts.
