Ethernet poor performance

I am attempting to build an IPv4/IPv6 router. I have put a 2nd ethernet card in a box. I have one Ethernet card attached to my network and the other to a switch with nothing else there just so the link comes up for testing. When I have the built-in Ethernet attached to my network, I get pings around 60ms. The other card, btw, does not have any IP addresses configed. When I switch the cards around, the addon card attached to my network, I get pings that alternate with one being ~1488ms and the next 488ms! This is regular. This is the 2nd card I have tried. The 1st one was getting ping times of 1900ms/900ms. I have played around with the IRQ for the 2nd card. The 1st card I tried I was limited to 9,10, or 11. The card I am using now allows 3, 4, or 7 (btw, I have disabled serial and parallel ports). Any Idea where I should look to fix this?

Want to _prevent_ upgrade to centos 5.2

Hi, With the release of 5.2 "yum update" seems to be upgrading our computers from CentOS 5.1 to CentOS 5.2. I note from release notes for 5.2 that you are only supposed to get 5.2 if you type in "yum upgrade". On two seperate machines entering "yum update" has resulted in yum geting repo information for packages with versions that only exist in the base repository of centos 5.2. The following snippet shows the beginning of yum update on a x86_64 server. It has noticed python-2.4.3-21.el5.x86_64, ltrace-0.5-7.45svn.el5.x86_64 and system-config-securitylevel-tui.x86_64 0:1.6.29.1-2.1.el5 which are a CentOs 5.2 package. On a workstation yum update resulted in upgrade of firefox from 1.5 to 3.0-0 beta5. Can I stop this from happening? Ideally I would like to stay on a particulare version of CentOS eg 5.2 until we can do a controlled upgrade. Maybe we have the same problem as having stable specified in a debian sources.list where what is meant by stable changes when a new version of debian is released. how to create an mpeg4 mimetype (OT)

Hi All, I think this may be off topic, but since it's through centos 5.2, I'm not sure. Here is what I would like to do: I have created a web page for family to log into and view clips of my new niece. My camera saves these clips in mpeg4 format. What I would like to do is have the web clients click on the link and have either the clip pop up a save dialog or even better, start playing the clip. Right now if the link is clicked it starts downloading right away but the file looks like gibberish. I guess what I am seeing is the raw code. I think it's a mimetype thing but I'm not sure and if it is, how would I create the mimetype entry to do what I would like? Thanks in advance for any and all information received. Phil

Rebuild of kernel 2.6.9-67.0.20.EL failure

Hello list. I'm trying to rebuild the 2.6.9.67.0.20.EL kernel, but it fails even without modifications. How did I try it? Created a (non-root) build environment (not a mock ) Installed the kernel.scr.rpm and did a rpmbuild -ba --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec 2> prep-err.log | tee prep-out.log The build failed at the end: Processing files: kernel-xenU-devel-2.6.9-67.0.20.EL Checking for unpackaged file(s): /usr/lib/rpm/check-files /home/john/rpmbuild/tmp/kernel-2.6.9-67.0.20.EL-root RPM build errors: In my setup rebuilding the 2.6.9-67.0.15.EL kernel went ok Does anybody knows what I do miss or what is going wrong? For the curios: Why to recompile the kernel? I want to rebuild the kernel because I created a patch to decrease the kernel timer frequency from 1000 to 100 HZ. The CentOS4.6 kernel doesn't have the divider option available in CentOS5.2 This prevent timing problems and high CPU load in VMware ESX.

xen save/restore causes cron to hang

i haven't found anything online to talk about this, so maybe i've got something odd going on here. i have my xen set up to save/restore on dom0 reboot. almost everything works fine, but cron on the guest os'es (everything is centos 5 x86_64) stop processing jobs. i'm guessing it is missing an alarm or something like that. anyone else see this?

Problem with nvidia-drv-x11 when upgrading to CentOS 5.2

Hi! I know that the nvidia-drv-x11-package is from RPMForge, but I thought I might mention it here. I have a machine with a NVidia-card and because of the ease of use I use the rpmforge-package for that. After upgrading the problem was that during rebooting as soon as the machine hit the RHGB (which implicitly uses that driver) the machine froze. I booted into the old kernel removed rhgb, rebooted. Now the machine froze when starting X. Same procedure: Old Kernel. Remove nvidia-drv-x11. Reboot into the new kernel and reinstall nvidia-drv-x11. After a reboot everything works as it used to. The cause of the problem could have been (sorry, I didn't do any thorough forensic) that the nvidia.ko that was used in the new kernel was a symbolic link from the "weak-updates"-directory into the old kernel "extra"-directory. Is it possible that this only works inside of kernels with the same x in CentOS 5.x ? For the other machines I am upgrading I plan to 1. deinstall nvidia-x11-drv 2. do a regular "yum upgrade" 3. reinstall nvidia-x11-drv after reboot Is there any better way to do it? Bernhard PS: the main purpose of this message is to alert others to this problem, not to get an answer, although that would be nice

is CentOS an LSB certified product?

Hi all, Would anyone know if CentOS 4 and 5 is LSB certified? I have not found any info on RH being LSB certified either. Is RH also LSB certified? In case you need to know, I am compiling a list of LSB certified Linux just for comparison as to who would want to be LSB certified. extract MIME attachments from 700MB imap folder

Hi all, Issue: I've been tasked with extracting a bunch of MIME attachments (M$Word docs) from emails which have been stored in an imap folder in /home/<username>/mail/<imap foldername>. As the subject states, the imap folder is about 700MB. Googling suggested that munpack might do the trick, but as it is intended only for one message at a time, it outputs the first attachment found, then exits gracefully. Further searches seemed to talk about mimedump, so I yum installed perl-MIME-tools.noarch from rpmforge as mimedump this was needed, and includes mimedump. I've read the man page, but am wholly unclear as to: 1) will this do the trick for me 2) are there other known tools which might be recommended Thanks in advance, -Ray System runs CentOS 5.1, not updated since April, but it is not connected to the internet (I do bring it online to install packages as needed); I will do a complete upgrade before the end of this month.
