Running Asterisk & Freepbx on readonly Root (Stateless System)

Hi I am trying to Run AsteriskNow 1.5 which uses Centos 5.3 Distribution with Readonly Root Filesytem. Right now if I shutdown the system abrupty or there is power failure linux kernel doesn't not boot "Kernel panic" and other short of issues.prb due to corrupted files. Thats why i want to make root filesystem as read-only and placing some directories /var and /etc/asterisk etc as read/write in fstab so above problem doesn't exists. Centos Provides fantastic experimental technolyg with only a single line configuration to root read-only and make it boot /etc/sysconfig/readonly-root file Edting /etc/sysconfig/readonly-root -> change READONLY=no to READONLY=yes * * I tried but i am not able to run asterisk and freepbx.Linux system boots up properly. Any one has ever tried this ..Any suggestion how to proceed with. Thx *Alok* * *

CentOS 5.4 32-bit vs. 64-bit strange mystery WRT PXEBoot

I am in the process of migrating my desktop system from 32-bit CentOS 4.8 to 64-bit CentOS 5.4. One of the things I want to be able to do is boot my IBM Thinkpad X25 laptop via its PXEBoot ROM over the LAN (it has a hard disk and boot locally just fine, I just want a way to boot it for rescue and/or new O/S installs). On my 32-bit CentOS 4.8 this works just fine. It also works on another machine, running 32-bit CentOS 5.4. On my desktop system running the 64-bit version of CentOS 5.4 it does not. The DHCP part works fine, but I get a 'TFTP ARP TIMEOUT' message. The various config files are all the same (or consistent). I cannot figure out what is wrong. If I let the laptop boot up normally, it is happy to use tftp to fetch pxelinux.0 from the 64-bit CentOS 5.4 system. It just won't fetch it from the boot ROM. Another issue to consider with SSDs is that they are based on Flash technology. Each flash cell can only be written on about 10,000 to 100,000 times or so (*), so if you're using extensive read/write on your server you will be impacted. SSD manufacturers go around this issue by giving some intelligence to the drive controllers, so that they minimize the per-cell usage (which means moving things around a bit internally, transparently to you), so in many cases you will not see any impact. However, I would be careful on what I run on it, and what services are enabled, maybe having another disk around for write intensive apps. New selinux-policy breaks logwatch emails?

Hello, After a yum update last night, I had a CenOS 5.4 i386 system pull in the following selinux updates: Jan 07 21:39:14 Updated: selinux-policy-2.4.6-255.el5_4.3.noarch Jan 07 21:39:31 Updated: selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-255.el5_4.3.noarch This machine has SELinux set to Enforcing. This morning, I see I got the following email from Cron: /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch: sendmail: warning: premature end-of-input on /usr/sbin/postdrop -r while reading input attribute name sendmail: fatal: root(0): unable to execute /usr/sbin/postdrop -r: Success Frankly, this error message means little to mean... in the course of troubleshooting, I tried this: # setenforce Permissive # /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch And it worked! The logwatch email sends without error. If I turn SELinux back to Enforcing, then the email error is consistently repeated. What confuses me is that, when SElinux enforcing causes this error to occur, no SELinux or AVC messages appear in /var/log/messages or /vaar/log/secure or /var/log/audit/audit.log. Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

kickstart config file for LiveCD

Going through the steps for putting a LiveCD on a USB stick, I'm reading the docs and one is a bit ambiguous on one point: <https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/wiki/GetToolset> says: "The LiveCD creation process requires a kickstart configuration file." But two lines above that, is says the kickstart config file is optional. I've created a couple LiveCDs in the past (never on a USB stick though) and never needed a kickstart configuration file. Also, the same doc points to two different ones without explaining much about each. Perhaps here I should mention that my ultimate goal here is to take the USB stick into a computer store, boot up various laptops with it to see which ones have Linux-compatible hardware. So there's two issues here really-- at least. Any help, clarification, explanation would be much appreciated. -- Without music, life would be a mistake. --Friedrich Nietzsche

Setup multiple bridges for use with KVM

Running CentOS 5.4 x64. Have successfully bridged eth2 with br2 by following the instructions here: http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Networking (under the RHEL section) Have been running several KVM VMs successfully via this bridge. I am now trying to bridge additional interfaces by using the same routine. Each bridge is named to correspond with the ethX device its bridged with. Example of ifcfg-eth0 script: DEVICE=eth0 HWADDR=00:16:76:D6:C9:45 ONBOOT=yes BRIDGE=br0 then of ifcfg-br0 script: DEVICE=br0 TYPE=Bridge BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=yes DELAY=0 This is repeated 3 times for eth0-eth2 and br0-br2. I've read somewhere that STP needs to be enabled when using multiple bridges. I've tried adding STP=on to the ifcfg-brX scripts but with the same result. Yes, brctl shows that STP is on. The original bridge eth2-br2 continues to work but I can't get any traffic across any other bridge. Either by dhcp or static ips. Is multiple bridges a possibility? Previous to moving to KVM I was running Xen Server on the same hardware. I am just trying to recreate the network setup I had. I believe Xen Server runs on top of a linux platform so such a thing should be possible. Thanks, Jacob
