The screenSaver is blocked in my centos5.3

When I open the screensaver windows in the kde, I find that it is blocked . I switch to the gnome, it is the same. Is it some rpm that I do not install it?

Announce list digest ??

It seems that the past month or so the CentOS Announce list digest has no longer been sent out to the general CentOS list ( this list ) although the CentOS Web site still says that this list is subscribed to the Announce list in digest form. I've been checking, and the announce message does not seem to be getting caught in any spam filter that I use. tools one could to use to troubleshoot for Apache

Have a question , Suppose i had a client tell me that he can access the web page but it takes long time to view the pages the website is a static website ( suppose this website does not server dynamic data or does not connect to a database )... what would one check other than : the server load ( cat /proc/loadaverage ) , the Apache logs , the number of client connection ( netstat -tupln |grep :80 |wc -l ) -- how would i know if it a client side issue or a server side issue ........ -- Regards Agnello D'souza

server is extremly slugish - unable to troubleshoot..

Dear all, I have a virtual machine with the following specs: Core 2 DUO 3.2 GHZ 4 GB RAM hdd: IDE 320 GB 32 bit OS: centos 5.2 I'm using it for local development with a number of Virtual hosts, and a big mysql database. the prob: At times, with no specific reason. system becomes extremly slugish. http requests takes forever to be served. Even ssh connections takes time to connect, and a simple command such as "clear" takes anywhere between 3 to 10 seconds to execute. i've checked TOP, over and over again and it's always within the following: CPU load average is max 10 % , and at that specific time it's never above 30 % RAM: swap is never used, there's always around 1.5 GB of free memory so it's not a matter of CPU nor RAM. so my next thought were that HDD is maxing out on the hosting physical server. i checked on the physical server, and HDD I/O is within normal range. and other VMs workign on the same physical server are running smoothly.. so what can i do more to troubleshoot? this is happening more than it should without any scenario in common. any advice on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated... PS: any command that may show I/O in KB/MB on the HDD ?

SDA and HDA

With the default settings in my Supermicro motherboard CentOS calls my SATA drive /dev/hda. If in bios setup I change 'Native Mode Operation' from auto to 'Serial ATA' it boots up calling the drive /dev/sda. I keep thinking its likely better under /dev/sda not? Any problem switching it to that after install? Matt

rexec error - where are you

Hi all, I've a particular host on my network that when I run; rexec -l username -p password remotehost command it just hangs. When I do; rexec -a -l username -p password remotehost command i get; Where are you? If I do; rexec -l username -p password localhostname (not just localhost but its actual name) command it works. Any ideas would be very appreciated. - aurf

Hi List, I am working on LINUX for the past six years , and am a core linux guys since i started my career on linux . Working more on Redhat / centos / Fedora based distribution system administration . with some basic bash scripting knowledge. Now am looking to deep dive into programming to contribute or innovate some thing new on linux operating system or kernel space (More importantly on kvm virtualization front since am an expert on virtualization). So i need your guidance to start my new career on linux programming front . As of now am planned to start with below sequences . C C++ Linux kernel Programming python Java Kindly provide me some good web links or beginner to advanced docs for the above languages to start , also correct me if am wrong any where . securing a remotely hosted machine

Hi, I'm looking to put together a doc for the wiki.c.o on howto secure a remotely hosted machine. Its a situation that many of us find ourselves in, wherein we either lease or colo a server ( or many ) and there is always the issue of remote hands, other facility users etc being able to get physical access of the machines. So what are the usual steps that people take in order to secure their remote-hosted-servers. A short list of things that I tend to always do is : - disable all getty's - make grub boot imediately with no user interrupt possible - put sensitive data on a locally encrypted disk - plumb in a bios password - have all console redirected to a iLo / drac / ipmi2 device; if there is one of those - if not then redirect the output to a non-existing ttySX port ( isnt ideal! ) - disable all telnet and http/https access to the ilo / drac interfaces, ensure impi is secured. What other, reasonable, steps should one consider ? the end result, ofcourse, is to still have the option of handing passwords etc to the DC ops should there be a need to actually work on the machine remotely. so removing the keyb and display interfaces might not be desirable. - KB
