CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway

Hi Everyone, I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server (though it might be fun to have a local web) -- I might also use the computer for a file server, but I mostly want a... proxy server? Not sure what tool I need to use. I seem to remember there were specialty Linux distributions for this purpose. Once I do figure out what kind of box I'm building, would I still be able to put my Linksys router behind it, or would the Linux box *be* the router? -- and would I have to get a wireless switch instead? Would a Pentium III handle this duty, or would it gum up the works and make the Internet too slow? Sorry for stupid questions. At some point I'm going to have to learn about Linux servers. PAM_shield locking me out?

Yesterday I installed pam_shield and followed the testing suggested and thought all was well. today I find that I cannot get to my email account, I can login via ssh okay (uses keys) but su and sudo give segmentation faults. I am guessing due to the pam module causing a problem. As I cannot do remote login as root and sudo and su use pam I appear to have locked myself out. Any words of wisdom from those a little more knowledgeable? Why do I keep trying new things - I like to improve my system and harden it against constant script kiddies (many different triers per day), but despite reading all the instructions I fall into a hole I cannot climb out of. Hopefully someone has an idea BTW - the console also fails to allow login TIA Rob

Automatically detecting LUNs without a reboot

Hi everybody. I have an HP StorageWorks array connected to one of my servers, connected via an LSI controller (lspci reports: SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 08)) on an HP DL385 running CentOS 5.5 x86_64. I have set up multipath and all is working but, when I create a snaphost and export it as a new LUN from the HP web interface, it does not appear as a new disk. If I reboot, I get the LUN to appear as a new SCSI device (sd[a-z]). Is there any way I can force automatic detection? One of the reasons to use snapshots is to be able to back up the system without downtime, so not being able to detect the LUNs makes the whole set up a bit pointless. I have tried kudzu, the rescan-scsi-bus.sh script and everything else I have found online, with no luck. The LSI tools only seem to be available for i386, and I would like to avoid adding the 32bit environment, if I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gabriel Tabares

Centos 5.5, not booting latest kernel but older one instead

I've been going along not noticing things happening right under my nose. so imagine my surprise when I discovered last night that my Centos 5 box has installed multiple new kernels over the last few months, as updates come out, and IT IS NOT BOOTING THE NEWST ONE. grub.conf says to boot kernel 0, and 0 is the newest one. but the one it actually boots is 6 or 8 down the list (clearly I've not been keeping things cleaned up, either). Below is some info that shows the problem. Can anyone here provide helpful suggestions on (1) why it is doing this, and more importantly (2) how I can make it stop? GFS/GFS2 on CentOS

Hi all, If you have had experience hosting GFS/GFS2 on CentOS machines could you share you general impression on it? Was it realiable? Fast? Any issues or concerns? Also, how feasible is it to start it on just one machine and then grow it out if necessary? Thanks. Boris.

korganizer missing alarms

Korganizer has been working fine for years for me. But just recently it's started missing alarms... I mean I set an alarm for an event but the window for it is never popped. I googled around and found that other were having this problem back in 2007 and 2005, but there's no mention of it in recent months. problem about editing keypad

Hi, guys The keypad, i.e. the arrow keys, page up, page down, home, end and so on, does not work, which is very annoying. My system is CentOS 5.5. Is there any one who can help? Thank you very much! regards, fanping

e2fsck with millions of files

I have a large (1.5TB) partition with millions of files on it. e2fsck has been running nearly 12 hours and is still on "Checking directory structure". Any tips for speeding this along?
