Is it the ITE IT8212 ATA RAID Controller ? I would suspect that raid card - the few I've tried didn't work well even with the manufacturer's supplied windows drivers. The linux drivers might not be any better. I'm not sure why you distrust DMA, or if it's just on this one card that you have problems with it. ATA is being phased out now, it became a very mature and reliable technology its it final years. Motherboards with onboard ATA66/100/133 ports became extremely reliable. As long as you used the 80 wire cables. Unfortunately, a good controller is hard to find. I used to like Promise as a windows controller. They were very reliable if you had the lastest firmware and drivers. But I don't know if they work well in linux, or even how well their current models work. (been a while since I've used one)

variable raid1 rebuild speed?

I have a 750Gb 3-member software raid1 where 2 partitions are always present and the third is regularly rotated and re-synced (SATA disks in hot-swap bays). The timing of the resync seems to be extremely variable recently, taking anywhere from 3 to 10 hours even if the partition is unmounted and the drives aren't doing anything else and regardless of what I echo into /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min or _max. Is there some way to tell if the drives are going bad or speed it up consistently if they aren't? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

dirty screen

Is there a command that marks the screen as "dirty" and hopefully redraws it? If I do a control ALT F1 and the F7 this in effect redraws the screen. I am getting video artifacts that I think is in the nvidia driver. the switching console works - I was just hoping there is a more convenient way. some command or something. Thanks, Jerry

IPv6, HE tunnel and ip6tables problems

CentOS 5.5, fully patched. I have a HE tunnel (tunnelbroker.net) IPv6 tunnel. This works pretty well and is simple to setup. Everything works fine. Until I try to set up an ip6tables firewall. eg if I try to view https://dnssec.surfnet.nl/?p=464 then the page never displays and the firewall shows kernel: IN=sit1 OUT=eth0 SRC=2001:0610:0001:40cd:0145:0100:0186:0033 DST=my.machine LEN=80 TC=0 HOPLIMIT=56 FLOWLBL=0 PROTO=TCP SPT=443 DPT=40367 WINDOW=5712 RES=0x00 ACK SYN URGP=0 I also see some DNS issues kernel: IN=sit1 OUT=eth0 SRC=2001:0620:0000:0009:0000:0000:0000:1103 DST=my.machine LEN=542 TC=0 HOPLIMIT=54 FLOWLBL=0 FRAG:1232 ID:0086942f PROTO=UDP (the source address here is ns1.zurich.surf.net). I'm wondering if this is due to fragmentation, but I'm only guessing. The dnssec page refered to above indicates there may be a fragment re-assembly issue causing ip6tables problems. Now I'm a newbie to IPv6 so I might be making a mistake. thumbnail cache

This webpage tells me that you can set the thumbnail cache size using gconf-editor: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1481182 However, the gconf-editor that I have on Centos 5.5 doesn't have that setting.
