large memory usage by perl .so modules?

Under Centos 5.5 on an x86_64 box I am seeing large memory usage associated with perl .so modules. Example: this script: #!/usr/bin/perl use Time::HiRes; open(SMAPS, "/proc/$$/smaps"); while (<SMAPS>) { if (m/^\d/) { chomp($lib = (split(' ', $_))[5]); } elsif (m/^Size:\s*(\d+.*)/) { my $size = $1; print "$size $lib\n" if ($lib =~ m/HiRes/); } } produces this output: 24 kB /usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so 2044 kB /usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so 4 kB /usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so What is this 2044 kB entry? On a 32-bit Centos 5.4 box the same script emits: 20 kB /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so 4 kB /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so The 2044 kB entry seems to be counted towards memory usage as reported by ps. /etc/hosts not resolving hostnames

I have modified /etc/hosts file with IP address and hostname entries. However, host command is returning 'Host vhost1.example.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)'. Also, apache is returning error on start as '[error] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: Could not resolve host name vhost1.example.com-- ignoring!' . The ssh worked fine and resolved the hostname correctly (ssh from same system to itself - just for test). Am I missing something here? I thought /etc/hosts will be referred for all lookups. Any help?? jM.

Exception error with 5.5 installation

Hi there -- I am trying to install the 64-bit version onto one of our servers. When I get to the point of loading various software packages, I normally select KDE desktop, and also make sure that CentOS extras is also selected. Once that is done, I click on Next to have the installation continue. Every attempt that I have made has resulted in an exception error occurring with the python packages. As a result, the installation fails. I have not been able to install CentOS since this problem started occurring. Does anyone know of a way I can get around this problem? Thanks. iptables package issue

I just did a test install off a netinstall iso to a mirror repo which left no /etc/sysconfig/iptables file in place. So a quick check: # yum whatprovides /etc/sysconfig/iptables --disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=base --enablerepo=updates --disableplugin=\* No Matches found Without that file iptables doesn't start as per the init script. Anyone know what may be awry? Thanks, jlc

It's not necessary to defend yourselves over a certain point (that has long been reached). Non-devs: if you think you can make a valuable contribution to centos infrastructure/development, please move over to centos-devel and make your serious offer *kindly* there. Can anyone suggest a SCSI 3 card in either PCI-X or PCI-E x 4 for a Dell Poweredge 2900?

The only PCI-X card I have is an old ICP Vortex RAID controller and the Dell hangs with that installed (BIOS is disabled). It's only for a tape drive so performance isn't really an issue. thanks

Controlling the order of /dev/sdX devices?

Hi CentOS 5.4(final) 2.6.18-164el5PAE. I am trying to prevent removable USB and eSATA devices from occupying /dev/sdX devices ahead of a 3ware RAID controller. For example: at boot, if a USB drive and eSATA HDD (connected to an LSI 1068E onboard controller, reflashed in "IT" mode to handle hotplug devices) were both present, they would occupy devices /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, ahead of the RAID controller which ends up as /dev/sdd. As these are removable devices, they should normally get handled by custom udev script looking for adds matching KERNEL=="sd[c-z][0-9]" ,SUBSYSTEM=="block", so the volume handled by RAID controller gets grabbed by udev but fails to mount and subsequent udev plug events fails due the slots left empty below /dev/sdd. If no hotplug devices are present while booting, fstab handles mounting of the system and RAID volume: SATA system HDD /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / RAID array LABEL=STORE /store ## mounts == /dev/sdb1 I realise this description is kind of a tangle, but i am essentially looking for a way to hard-map the 3ware RAID controller to /dev/sdb (UUID won't work as there are multiples of this system) before PCI (?) enumeration picks up the USB and LSI-managed devices so that udev can take care of the device at /dev/sdc and above. I've tried blacklisting the mpt and usb-storage modules and short-circuiting SUBSYSTEM=="block" devices in 05-udev-early.rules, all with zero or negative effect. rc.sysinit doesn't appear to be the right place and that's about as deep down as i know how to go. cheers, cs

Kernel Panic on HP/Compaq ProLiant G7

Hello Everyone, I recently installed CentOS 5.5 x86_64 on a brand new ProLiant DL380 G7. I have identical OS software running reock-solid on two other DL380 ProLiant servers, but they are G6 models, not G7. On the G7, the installation went perfectly and the machine ran great for about 2 weeks, when it just seemed to "stop". The system stopped responding on the network, and there was no video on the console (or remote console via iLO). It would not reboot or cold boot through iLO, I actually had to hold the power to turn it off and then hit it again to power up. This happened several times within a few days of each other. Each time, there was no evidence in any logs of a problem - the system just seemed to stop or lock up. We did have a CPU problem light appear on the front, so HP came in and replaced the one 4-core CPU. Since then, it has run as long as two weeks, but still crashes randomly. I have the Samba3x packages installed since we are beginning to introduce Win7 clients into our environment. Googling "Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception" and "CentOS" produced many hits, but nothing that seemed to exactly match my problem. Since this is the only G7 server I have here right now, I can't reproduce the problem on another machine. The G6s I have running the identical version of CentOS have no problems. I am trying to determine if this is pointing to a hardware or software issue. Some of the Google results suggested using a Centosplus kernel - is this a good idea? The server is a HP DL380 G7 Server with 4 GB RAM (1 DIMM 1333 MHz), one 4-core CPU (2133 MHz), 4 built-in Broadcom "NetExtreme II BCM5709 II Gigabit Ethernet" NICs, and a P410 Smart Array Controller. The P410 and the system BIOS have both been updated to the latest levels to see if that fixes the crashes, with no change. Any idea where I should look next? Thanks for any help anyone can provide!
