yum update -> [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out

Trying to update a second CentOS box, I'm getting this error repeatedly: [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out I'm getting this on every mirror and have gone through the list of mirrors more than a dozen times. Oddly, the RPMs I'm trying to upgrade I upgraded just yesterday without a problem on another machine on the same LAN with no problems whatsoever. I can ping mirrors fine. There were a spate of these errors back in 2006. The fix for many was to add this line to yum.conf: timeout=300 So I did that on the machine where yum is having the problem, but the same errors are returned. Anyone else seeing this? Anyone know what the problem is?

raid1: solve smart error

centos 5.6 and intel MHD4500 graphics card

Hi! I've a toshiba satellite notebook, and I tried to install centos 5.6. The installer starts, but when it turns to graphical mode, the backlight goes off. I see the windows, buttons, but it's very dark, maybe the backlight switching off.. How can I get the installer to work correctly? The machine details: core i3 330m (The graphics controller maybe integrated to the cpu...) it's a MHD4500 (GMA4500) Thanks: Balazs

preventing symlinks?

This may be more of a general linux question but is there a simple way of preventing users from creating symlinks to or from certain directories? I have a /scratch dir that's a single 27TB volume and I don't want users linking their home dirs as there's a chance it will screw up our external backups. Is this a job for SELinux? Any ideas? Redirecting PHP error messages into a log file

Hello, I'm using CentOS release 5.5 x86_64 with the stock php-5.1.6-27.el5 and would like to redirect PHP messages into /var/log/httpd/php_log First I tried adding that file name to /etc/php.ini: error_log = "/var/log/httpd/php_log" and restarted httpd, but the file didn't appear. I've touched it and changed owner to apache.apache, but that didn't help. Then I've changed that line to error_log = syslog and now I get the messages in /var/log/messages: Jul 29 21:29:24 hXXX httpd: PHP Notice: Undefined index: REMOTE_ADDR in /var/www/html/odnoklassniki/index.php on line 44 Jul 29 21:29:45 hXXX httpd: PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[' in /var/www/html/odnoklassniki/index.php on line 44 I still would like to move those message to a separate file though, so I've added the following line to /etc/syslog.conf and reloaded syslogd service: httpd.* /var/log/httpd/php_log but the file is still empty. Repo question

Not quite OT, I think. On one PC, I'm running Scientific Linux 6, and would like to add one or more additional repositories for yum a/o PackageKit to draw on. (In particular, at the moment, I can't seem to find an rpm for Pan that doesn't come up against dependency hell.) There don't seem to be any help/discussion lists such as this for SL, or I haven't found them. So I'm guessing that this is the nearest thing to one -- and also that, just maybe, a repo for CentOS would be the canonical first choice for my need. Kernel Errors

Checking my daily logwatch file, I see the following kernel error: --------------------- Kernel Begin ------------------------ WARNING: Kernel Errors Present end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector ...: 1 Time(s) ---------------------- Kernel End ------------------------- The thing is I have not used a floppy disk for weeks. Any ideas what's happening please? Is reboot needed after updating kernel, glibc, database?

Hello, I always wanted to ask: do you need to reboot after updating packages like kernel, glibc, postgresql? Or do you need to restart the postgresql service after updating it with yum?
