SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. IE 9 not sending digest auth info

I migrated our internal wiki server last week, and some IE users aren't able to authenticate. The service is hosted by Apache using Digest authentication. It migrated from Apache 2.2.9 (Debian 5) to Apache 2.2.15 (CentOS 6). The internal hostname for the wiki server is a DNS CNAME that was repointed from one host to another during the cutover. In a normal session, 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client sends GET with Authorization header 4. Server sends 200 with Authentication-Info header and page content When using IE 9 (and possibly 8, I'm still trying to track that down), 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client resends GET (*without* Authorization header) 4. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 5. Etc. IE seems to be ignoring 401 and/or the WWW-Authenticate headers. Using Chrome on Windows works fine; the issues are specific to IE. Any ideas? CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?

USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev: Jun 27 19:53:37 torch kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sde at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch scsi.agent[13576]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host11/target11:0:0/11:0:0:0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! Jun 27 19:53:47 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! However, that's followed by this: Jun 27 19:54:07 torch hald[5179]: Timed out waiting for hotplug event 699. Rebasing to 699 I restarted hald (service haldaemon restart) and it picked up one of the two devices I'd plugged in, but not the other.

Unable to run yum update

Folks The system involved is a 32-bit system, installed via the net about a week ago. The command yum update encountered the following diagonstic Error: Package: yaf-1.3.2-1.el6.rf.x86_64 (@rpmforge) Requires: libfixbuf-0.9.0.so.8()(64bit) Removing: libfixbuf-0.9.0-1.el6.rf.x86_64 (@rpmforge) libfixbuf-0.9.0.so.8()(64bit) Updated By: libfixbuf-1.0.1-1.el6.rf.x86_64 (rpmforge) Not found You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest The repositories I use are: base epel extras rpmforge updates virtualbox I wonder if using priorities would help? Rpmforge is "supposed" to be non-conflicting, but then.... Please let me know what I should do. David

[C6] Some typical apps missing?

Hi everyone! :-) I just installed CentOS 6 on one of my desktop machines, and yum now tells me that some of my favorite apps are not present in any of the repositories I configured. To name a few: ktorrent, kile, krusader, pavucontrol, mplayerplug-in (or is it now gecko-mediaplayer), xine, xmms, and so on... All these apps were readily available for C5, and I used them happily. I am mostly surprised with the absence of *any* torrent client, bar the rtorrent (which doesn't have a man page and I have no idea how to use it). Also kile, krusader and pavucontrol are quite basic and common apps... The configured repositories are: base, updates, extras, rpmforge, elrepo, as reported by yum. What am I missing? I would also be grateful if anyone has a suggestion for a reasonable (and available) substitute for any of these apps. I usually prefer KDE4 apps, but will use anything that works. I found some (rtorrent, mozilla-vlc, gnome-volume-control), but I am not exactly thrilled with their quality, so I'm hoping someone has a better suggestion. Google didn't want to be my friend this time, all hits were related to C5... ;-) TIA, :-) Marko

VLAN support?

Are there any new tools in CentOS 6 to configure VLAN interfaces (where the switch passes multiple tagged VLANs over one physical link to the host) or is it best to edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/eth?.vlan# files manually? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Not receiving root mail

Although I have the alias defined in /etc/aliases and /etc/postfix/aliases, I'm not receiving root mail. Following the previous thread about unreceived logwatch mail, I tested with a manual run of logwatch, and found that my ISP is rejecting the mail because it is seeing an envelope carrying my local address. My suspicion is that the mail is going out via sendmail instead of postfix-sendmail. IIRC there used to be system-switch-mail or a similarly named package. I can't find any such package - and can't remember which file it edited. Can someone please point me to that file? Anne -- New to KDE Software? - get help from http://userbase.kde.org

Where are the CentOS 6 security updates?

The release announcement for CentOS-6.0 posted on CentOS-announce on Sun Jul 10 mentioned that: > Since upstream has a 6.1 version already released, we will be using a > Continous Release repository for 6.0 to bring all 6.1 and post 6.1 > security updates to all 6.0 users, till such time as CentOS-6.1 is > released itself. There will be more details about this posted within the > next 48 hours. I have not noticed anything said about this since, and I can't find any security updates. Firefox, for instance, is at 3.6.9. This is about a year old with many known security problems, so it really shouldn't be used. CentOS 5 and RHEL 6 have 3.6.18. Are there still no security updates available for CentOS 6, or have I just managed to completely miss how to access them?
