Yum Segfaulting

Hi All, I have a Centos 5.8 system with relatively little memory, that runs in rl3, where yum has decided not to work any more. As follows:- # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 774628 697516 77112 0 77720 313284 -/+ buffers/cache: 306512 468116 Swap: 2048276 160 2048116 # yum -v Segmentation fault # uname -a Linux **.**.co.uk 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue Apr 17 17:08:10 EDT 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux # cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5.8 (Final) I checked with "rpm -V yum" that its installed OK. Rebuilt the rpm database. Cut yum.repos.d down to just Centos-Base. I've manually cleared its cache. I've stopped most other processing to get the free memory to around 300K and yum still segfaults. I don't really feel like managing this system with just rpm :-( Any ideas where to look - I'm a bit stumped. yum --security not detecting security updates

Hello, We are running CentOS 5.5 on a server that is not reporting any security updates: [root@server01 ~]# yum -y --security check-update Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, security Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile * base: bay.uchicago.edu * extras: bay.uchicago.edu * updates: mirror.nyi.net Limiting package lists to security relevant ones No packages needed, for security, 261 available However, Nexpose, our vulnerability scanner detected otherwise. Upon digging deeper, I noticed that we are on a kernel version that has a known issue fixed in a later version: [root@server01 ~]# rpm -q kernel kernel-2.6.18-194.el5 kernel-2.6.18-194.8.1.el5 http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2010-0610.html http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2010-August/016890.html I appreciate anyone's insight in helping me understand this a bit better. dm-multipath do not autoscan partition table

Hello I am wondering if anyone este tried this. I Have few CentOS 6.2 systems that are running KVM virtual machines. As storage backend for them I use 2 iscsi targets (based on openindiana). For accessing these disks I use dm-multipath, since I use 2 separate networks for access. For these reasons I want host system to force not to scan dm-multipath disks for partitions. free memory listing

Hi, I have two 64 bit cent Os machine. I googled that in linux always show entire memory as used. But below showing only 1 GB detected. *Machine 1 :* i) It has 31 GB of ram. [root@machine1]# free -g total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 31 1 30 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 0 30 Swap: 49 0 49 ------------------------------------------ *Machine 2 :* i)It has 11 GB of ram. Whether the following information is complete or entirely correct or contains redundancies I will leave for others to comment upon. In the end, to completely install a working UTF-8 locale from a customized source file in /usr/share/i18n/locales on both CentOS-5 and CentOS-6 I had to do this: localedef --replace -c -f UTF-8 -i /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_CA@yyyy-mmm-dd en_CA(a)yyyy-mmm-dd.utf8 localedef --no-archive -c -f UTF-8 -i /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_CA@yyyy-mmm-dd en_CA(a)yyyy-mmm-dd.utf-8 localedef --no-archive -c -f UTF-8 -i /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_CA@yyyy-mmm-dd en_CA(a)yyyy-mmm-dd.UTF8 localedef --no-archive -c -f UTF-8 -i /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_CA@yyyy-mmm-dd en_CA(a)yyyy-mmm-dd.UTF-8 localedef --no-archive -c -f UTF-8 -i /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_CA@yyyy-mmm-dd en_CA@yyyy-mmm-dd Evidently, the archived version is expected to have the extension .utf8 but all the other aliased extensions are customarily expected as well. I was unable to find where on the system said locale aliases are kept however. The most likely candidate that I found was /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.alias but I could find no entries therein pertaining to my customized locales. - problem with reboot or shutdown

hi all, I have a problem with my CentOS 6.3 distribution only when I restart or turn off the machine it does not restart properly. remains in both cases black screen and then I do not understand exactly what he's doing. grub after I hit send and then darkness. only after that forcement for a further time the power cycle then it works. the kernel version is 2.6.32-279.14.1.el6.i686 where is the problem? thanks in advance cheers

grub.conf corrupt in boot grub, fine in rescue shell

I'm trying to load CentOS 6.3 on a used server based on a Tyan Tomcat n3400b motherboard. The first 2 drives are configured as a RAID mirror in the BIOS and the remaining 4 drives are not configured but apparently still have RAID metadata on them. I hadn't yet figured out how to fix that but went ahead and loaded the OS on the mirrored set. After pulling out a drive from the unused set, grub stopped at the grub prompt. I can find (hd0,0)/grub/grub.conf but when I cat it I get corruption with recognizable fragments. I can use setup (hd0) without issue but reboots keep dumping me at the grub prompt. I booted into the rescue environment of the minimal install CD and grub.conf looks just fine. It's only corrupt when I look at it from the grub boot environment. What could be going wrong?
