Fail2ban problem

If there is a serious power failure, eg during an electric storm, and the internet goes down then my CentOS-6.2 server seems to take an inordinate time, maybe forever, to get past fail2ban. It is as though there is an extremely long - maybe an hour - timeout if fail2ban cannot connect to the internet. (I usually stop the machine with the power-button, re-boot into a different OS (Fedora) and chkconfig off fail2ban.) CentOS 5 Testing repo

We were using the CentOS 5 testing repo on dev.centos.org to update our webservers' PHP to 5.2. However, we've just tried building a new machine lately and found that the repo seems to be empty. Is this a temporary fault, or has it gone away now that CentOS 6 is out? If it has gone away, where can I grab PHP 5.2 packages from? CentOS Server Backup Options

What do you guys recommend for backing up a small CentOS server in a business environment. It will have (3) 300gb drives in a raid 5 array but I don't anticipate more than about 25gb of data that needs to be backed up each night. I want a lot of backups with a rotation scheme that included daily, weekly, and monthly copies. I want the daily copies of the data kept until the next week, and the weekly copy being kept for four weeks, and the monthly copies being kept for a year. The vendor is recommending a RD1000 Removable Disk device. This looks like it has great specs. Each cartridge holds 160gb (non-compressed) and the drive costs about $420 but seems that with each removable cartridge costing $128, we may be limited to how many cartridges we could have, thus perhaps not retaining backup instances as long as I like. I asked about a HP DAT160 tape drive. Each tape holds 160gb (non-compressed) and the drive costs about $730, and each tape only costs about $24, so it would be economical to have lots of backup instances saved for a long period of time. I have been using tape and the backup rotation scheme mentioned above for over 20 years. The vendor is telling me they don't recommend tape drives anymore and all of their customers are using removable hard drive for local backups. Am I missing something? My instincts tell me the tape drive is the right solution for a system with a small amount of data, where the system is used only from 8am - 5pm (so backup speed is not critical) and where we want to save backup instances for a long time before overwriting them. Any input would be welcomed.

Kickstart network issues

Hello all - (Please forgive me if I sent this msg twice, first one didn't seem to go through) I searched through the archives and did not see anything about this (along with google), but if I missed something please don't hesitate to send me some links. Basically I have hit a problem that I cannot figure out at this point and seemed to have ran out of ideas via Google or the documentation. I am kickstarting (using cobbler) CentOS 6.2 installs over a private network (can reach the Internet). Part of the installations is to go grab various configuration files, rpm's, etc that are located both internal to the network (different subnet) and externally on the Internet somewhere. This problem seems to be intermittent since it works half of the time, but not the other half. Any of my kickstart scripts I have that use local commands (not wget'ing files) work just fine no problems. However when it comes to getting things from the network, it does not always get those files. Usually this errors out with a cannot resolve hostname error or no route to host. I have tried the following to overcome this: 1) During post-install, add a network start and sleep for 120 seconds to give it time to come up. 2) Made sure that the "network" commands in the kickstart included -activate 3) Tried making the downloads not depend on DNS which still does not work (no route to host). Are there any tricks to ensuring the network comes up during post-install for kickstart? By the way, after the kickstart is done and the VM boots up, there are no changes that need to be made to get the network up and running like normal... DNS, etc work fine immediately. newer smartctl?

If y'all remember the problem I posted a while back, with a 3TB drive for userspace loosing it on a server, and spitting DRDY errors, but which work on everything else. Well, enough research, and conversation, and I may have found the problem: it's a Caviar Green, meant for a desktop, and the controller in the server has issues, because it uses TLER: http://hardforum.com/archive/index.php/t-1285254.html http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=14603.0 In short, if it hits an error, it can take, in extreme cases, up to two min to recover; meanwhile, a RAID or HBA controller has hissy fits if it takes more than 7 or 15 seconds. I'm ready to test this out; the trouble is, either I d/l a DOS utility, or I find what, two years ago, was bleeding edge smartmontools; the one with 6.2, 5.39.1-5, does not allows smartctl -l scterc,70,70 /dev/sdb So, does anyone know a) what version might include that, and b) where I can find it? I have no problem building from a tarball, if I need to. mark

windbind and AD authentication - UPPER CASE usernames?

We're looking at using windbind and AD for our user account details but have run into a small snag. All user accounts in AD are upper case but our linux accounts are lower-case. Is there a simple solution we've overlooked? We really don't want to have to hack this... qemu-kvm for Centos 5 x86

Hey gang, I have been trying my hardest to get KVM running on a 32-bit CentOS 5. I know "upstream doesn't support it", but from what I gather, it *is* possible.
