Bind - built in root hints?

Over on the bind-users(a)lists.isc.org list, I am in a discussion about building the named.zone file, as Centos 6.3 does not provide it. It DOES provide a named.ca which is already old (wrt AAAA records) compared to the named.zone provided by internic. A few contributors have stated that now the hints are built into bind and you can see this with: strings /usr/local/sbin/named | grep A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET Well it looks like Centos has it at /usr/sbin/named and there are no such strings in there. Oh, these hints come from "lib/dns/rootns.c in the source code tree". So are the hints built in here?

[OT] how does ELF record file scope things?

fred.c: static void sfunc(int *p) { *p=1; } static int x; void fred(void) { ... sfunc(&x); ... } greg.c: static void sfunc(int *p) { *p=2; } static int x; void greg(void) { ... sfunc(&x); ... } Once the object files from fred.c and greg.c are linked, how does ELF distinguish the sfunc's and the x's? Setting up bind - location for includes

I am setting up bind this time around (just rebuilt my test machine via Kickstart) without chroot. I have a fair number of includes for named.conf; I have two views and other odds and ends. My thoughts are to make a directory; /etc/named.d to put all these includes into instead of 'dirtying' up /etc. This way the only files I replace/add to /etc are named.conf and rndc.key (I would like to work the latter around to also be in named.d, but this impacts rndc itself). Thoughts on this? Anyone else have a well segmented named.conf file?

Set an Ethernet Interface Metric

Hello All, I ended up answering my own question, but figured I'd share this and open up for discussion. It is possible to set a metric with 'route' or `ip route`. What I'm wondering is if there's a Red Hat/CentOS way of assigning a metric in the network-scripts? Answer: [0] (from 2008) works. ex: METRIC=10 Deployment Guides: EL5 [1] and EL6 [2] do not mention metrics on the previous interface configuration pages. *** The output from `ifconfig` does NOT show the metric as I set it, but the output from `route` does. I suppose this is the intended behavior? The default gateway route would have the metric and not the interface. add CA to centos clients

hi, I need to deploy an internal CA to our hosts. Fedora is planning something I could use now http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/SharedSystemCertificates but it is not there yet ;-) I already have a deploying infrastructure (cfengine), so my question is: what files do I need to move around for a systemwide installation? The obvious start point will be /etc/PKI/ but in there in a random client I already see some problems: ls -l /etc/pki/ total 28 drwxr-xr-x. 6 root root 4096 Aug 23 06:55 CA drwxr-xr-x. 4 root root 4096 Mar 13 2012 dovecot drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 Mar 11 2012 java drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 Feb 8 10:46 nssdb drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 4096 Oct 25 23:06 rpm-gpg drwx------. 2 root root 4096 Jun 22 2012 rsyslog drwxr-xr-x. 5 root root 4096 Oct 25 23:07 tls For ldap queries, I need to add it in /etc/openldap/certs and run cacertdir_rehash. But there are lots of other apps that have their own configuration. I guess I am not the first to have to do this, but google found little info about this. cheap cloud providors

Hey guys, Apologies in advance if this question is in poor taste. But I've really fallen in love with learning about the cassanrdra database. The only problem is that it doesn't run very well on an t1.micro instance at amazon and the larger sizes are quite expensive. An m1.small can do the trick, while still not optimal. So I was wonder if there was any real value in the cloud or even VPS world where I could setup a small Cassandra ring and go to town learning the ins and outs of how it operates. CentOS Bugtracker: how to give up on an issue?

Every time I go to http://bugs.centos.org/my_view_page.php I am shown, under "Reported by me", three problems with the CentOS Bacula packages which I reported in 2011, complete with proposed fix, but which never got any love (status still "new"): 0005271 missing dependency mt-st bacula - 2011-11-28 12:44 0005261 make_catalog_backup.pl creates .my.cnf with bad mode bacula - 2011-11-24 11:19 0005260 bad symlink /usr/sbin/dbcheck bacula - 2011-11-24 11:08 As I have since switched to Simone Caronni's better maintained Bacula packages I would prefer not to be constantly reminded of that useless effort anymore.
