httpd writes much to /var? How to audit it properly?

Hi All. I currently use: Apache/2.2.21 on: 2.6.32-279.9.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 CentOS release 6.3 (Final) >From time to time (it happenes on different machines) I have a very high load up to 100, and I see that there are up to 300/s writes to /var at the same time. Apache restart solves the problem. I would like to know the reason so I decided to use auditd. I've used: auditctl -w /var -p warx And for example: ausearch -f /var -i -ts 04/29/2013 23:00:00 -te 04/29/2013 23:01:00 -ua 11111 | grep 'syscall=open' | wc -l gives me "5" but in my monitoring I see that there were up to 300 writes per second to /var at the same moment (id 11111 - httpd) (I have verified the writes with command line tools). ausearch -f /var -i -ts 04/29/2013 23:00:00 -te 04/29/2013 23:01:00 | grep 'syscall=open' | wc -l gives: 15 Thanks to auditd I know that the syscalls are performed on /var/tmp but why is there such a difference in auditd output and writes measured in operating system? Apache stops without evident cause

OS = CentOS-6.4 Uptime = 4 days, 1:31, httpd-2.2.15 SELinux=enforcing audit2why -l -a = nil report Since upgrading a public web service host from dedicated hardware running CentOS-5.x to a KVM virtual host running CentOS-6.3 I have experienced intermittent ( one every couple of months) halts by the Apache web service. There is never any trace left in any of the logs, there are no SELinux avc's recorded, and the rest of the system remains up. It is just the httpd service that stops. I have an automatic restart job in place so this is not a show stopper. But I am concerned that this behaviour is pointing to a fundamental problem somewhere. Has anyone else experienced this? Why is my default DISPLAY suddenly :3.0?

I'm on Fedora 6.3. After a reboot, some proprietary software didn't want to run. I found out that the startup script for said software manually sets DISPLAY to :0.0, which I know is not a good idea, and I can fix. Directory Server vs just plain old LDAP server

Hi all, I'm migrating from my Cent 5.x LDAP server to Cent 6.x. But wondering if there are any advantages to the Directory Server package itself? Been using regular old LDAP server for years now. I manage it both via Webmin and command line as well as some tweaks to a Drupal module. The fail over has always sort of bothered me as the secondary LDAP servers pull vs being pushed to, at least that was the case in Centos 5.x At any rate, your opinions would be appreciated. 4 monitors with one graphics card and standard driver

I've just test an ATI FirePro 2460 graphics card on CentOS 6.4. It connects 4 monitors. It worked with the standard radeon driver. I was able to arrange the monitors into my preferred configuration (as a square array, 1 upper left, 2 lower left, 3 lower right, 4 upper right) simply by clicking System -> Preferences -> Display, and then moving the four monitor images. This creates the file ~/.config/monitors.xml . Moving windows among the monitors worked smoothly. I did not install the proprietary ATI driver; I don't need any of its features beyond what the standard driver provides. Some details: Dell Optiplex 9010, Small Form Factor (SFF) case requires SFF cards. CentOS 6.4 fully updated as of today. 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 kernel xorg-x11-drv-ati 6.99.99 1.el6 x86_64 BIOS shows the board in slot 1 (the blue connector) as "VGA Compatible" lspci shows 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cedar [FirePro 2460] Kernel driver in use: radeon No xorg.conf was created or required. 4 Dell 2007FP monitors, each at 1600x1200 connected via DVI. I used to use Matrox M9140 cards, but that requires the Matrox proprietary driver which has not been updated for CentOS 6.4 as of today. I also tested two other cards: ATI FirePro 2450 and NVidia Quadro NVS 420. For each of these cards, the BIOS shows the card in slot 1 as a PCI Bridge. lspci reports two identical video cards at 03:00.0 and 04:00.0. Though it's easy to set up two screens properly, xinerama would probably be required in an xorg.conf to get all four screens working properly. -- Dale Dellutri

centos 6.4 networking problem

On this system I have two nics If I look at the network connection There is nothing there. If I do ifconfig -a the two nics are there If I do ifup eth0 I get device doesn't seem to be present If I do ifup eth1 the system search to determine the IP information for this device. [centos-6.3-desktop] Unable to login

Hello, I have trapped in weird problem. My Setup is CentOS 6.3 Desktop edition x86_64 arch. My login screen is blinking so frequently that I am unable to see and login into it. And also I am unable to reinstall the OS because it will take very long time re-setup everything as per my configuration as well as Data. The problem is as follows: I have several months ago libgcc-4.4.6.i686. Today for installing rsyslog, I updated the package libgcc-4.4.7.i686 and libgcc-4.4.7.x86_64. Then thinking about chances of conflict, I removed libgcc-4.4.7.i686 it has also removed the cups-libs gmp gnutils gtk2 libstdc++ libtiff peazip all are i686 type. Then I installed same packages for 64 bit through yum install <above packages> Message also said successfully installed. Then I try to open another terminal window but it was suddenly closing so I thought restart might solve this problem; so I restart the computer. I am getting normal CentOS login backgroud but getting faster blinking screen. How should I solve this problem (except formatting the CentOS) as CentOS is the only OS on that machine. 1.
