Kernel 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6 boot fail

Hello All: I installed 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 today and had some boot issues. After rebooting, the system locked immediately after the Asus motherboard logo. I thought at first that it was a hardware issue because it didn't appear that grub even loaded. I wasn't even able to get into the BIOS to change the boot order so it appeared that it was a hardware issue. I reset the MB BIOS and rebooted, which allowed me to get into the BIOS. Everything looked normal. I then tried to boot and the same issue. I repeated the BIOS clear and this time got to grub and let it load the latest kernel (2.6.32-358.14.1.el6). It hung again. I repeated the BIOS clear, go to the grub screen, selected the previous kernel and everything was fine. Once I got to the OS, I removed the "rhgb quiet" from grub.conf from the newest kernel. Rebooted. Hung again immediately after loading. The weird thing is that I couldn't just power down and get back to grub; I had to clear the BIOS again before I could even load grub to select the previous kernel. Anyone else experiencing issues with the latest kernel? Any idea why it seems to even corrupt the BIOS?

howto avoid Samba

Dear All, I'm replacing an older OpenSuse server with a new Centos6.4 server. So far that goes ok, except that the OpenSuse server is also a samba server with ldap connection. Since I replaced all but 2 machines in the building from Windows to Linux, I was hoping not to install Samba on the new server. ( And also because I can't get it to work on Centos. ) I saw a post on the mailinglist some time ago about Windows and Nfs, but find that Nfs is supported on Win7 Ultimate but not on Professional edition. I apologise if another way was mentioned in this post and I missed it. I googled and tried Omni-Nfs, but could not get a connection working. I installed TightVnc on Windows and that connects ok to the Centos server, but shared clipboard does not work. Can anyone point met to a useful solution to enable file sharing to Win7 Pro without Samba? Firewire on Centos-6 ???

Hi all! I'm trying to use my first-ever firewire device, and just OOB I'm not getting very far, so advice would be appreciated. I'm trying to use Kino. when I start it up and click the "capture" tab on the right I get a warning in the bar at the bottom of the Kino window that reads: WARNING: raw1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write /dev/raw/1394! which makes sense since there ins't a /dev/raw/1394. however, according to this: # find /dev -name \*firewire\* -print /dev/.udev/db/firewire:fw1 /dev/.udev/db/firewire:fw0 there are two firewire device nodes. Should Kino be using one of those device nodes instead of /dev/raw/1394? Or if not, does anyone have further advice (preferably helpful advice) ?? thanks! Hi, Following 2 vulnerabilities were detected in VA scan required for PCI compliance: 1. SSL Weak Cipher Suites Supported 2. SSL Medium Strength Cipher Suites Supported I'm using CentOS 5.8 with open ssl version "openssl-0.9.8e-22.el5_8.4". Any idea how to get rid of this? Thanks, Anumeha

Centos media repo

I can't seem to check off the centos media repo from within the add/remove application. Is there a way to do this? I tried to invoke gpk-application from root but it didn't work. Thanks-Patrick

Kernel 3.10 and CentOS 5

I have a Centos 5 machine which I've just compiled the 3.10.4 kernel on (remembering to set CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED) because I needed new rtlwifi drivers for my rtl8192cu device. So far, so good. It seems to work. Except /proc/bus/usb doesn't exist anymore. USB_DEVICEFS has been removed. An older kernel (3.2.9) says Usbfs entries are files and not character devices; usbfs can't handle Access Control Lists (ACL) which are the default way to grant access to USB devices for untrusted users of a desktop system. The usbfs functionality is replaced by real device-nodes managed by udev. These nodes lived in /dev/bus/usb and are used by libusb. Has anyone got udev on C5 working with this new kernel so my USB devices show? (It's not causing me any real issues, other than "lsusb" nor working; just curious!) -- rgds Stephen

looking for a comprehensive list of centos-compatible yum repositories (for gnustep program)

I installed CentOS 6.4 on a partition on my computer a few days ago, and i'm trying to equip it with the software i think i need. For example, i need, or i think i need, a couple of gnustep programs for uploading images from my digital camera (the programs being openapp and Camera.app). I imagine that these are old enough that they must surely exist in rpms somewhere. But i apparently don't know how to google around sufficiently well to locate a repository that contains them, or even that contains packages that i know exist as rpms. For example: i'm certain that an rpm exists for a package called gnustep-make, because its name popped up on http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=279655 But if i try 'sudo yum install gnustep-make' i get 'No package gnustep-make available.' So that clearly means that i don't have enough repositories configured for use. So, i'd be grateful for any pointers to a list of CentOS-compatible repositories that i can put in the yum configuration (/etc/yum.repos.d or elsewhere). (Maybe this is a FAQ, or an RTFM --- i'd appreciate any steering here!) dan

Does anyone know of a DVR that runs Linux that does NOT USE Active-X, and/or allows logging in directly? All I keep running into are crap that ->requires<- IE, and don't allow directly logging in. mark

Centos and percona5.5

Hi I have centos 6.4 and installed percona 5.5... everything works fine, but in phpmyadmin (which is installed on the same box), i get this error: Your PHP MySQL library version 5.1.66 differs from your MySQL server version 5.5.32. This may cause unpredictable behavior. How should handle this? Somewhere exists the correct php-mysql library? Thanks Levi
