I would like to set up a cron job to automatically check whether my mailserver and webserver are up, and tell me if they're not. This script tells me if my webserver is up: #!/bin/bash wget -q --tries=10 --timeout=20 --spider http://melvilletheatre.com if [[ $? -eq 0 ]]; then echo "Online" else echo "Offline" fi How can I do the something similar with my mailserver? No sound hardware detected for other users

Hey Y'all, This morning my wife complained that she had no sound when she was logged on to my machine. I logged on to her account and brought up System/Preferences/Sound to see if she had inadvertently selected some other sound output device. Hey, it happens. There was no sound hardware detected. I have a USB microphone and an integrated on board sound card. Neither of these sound devices were available on the Hardware, Input, or Output tabs. I have access to all these devices when I log on as myself. This system has been running smoothly since I installed CentOS 6.1 all those many years ago when that was the current point release. Now that 6.6 is out I'm seeing issues with video, fixed already, sound, not fixed already, and my web cam which I have yet to ask for help with. I'm not saying this sound problem has anything to do with 6.6. I seem to recall that in 6.5 one could simply tell the installer to do exactly that. In any case, somehow I experienced the situation that, even though I had 'deleted' each of the old mount points, the CentOS-7 installer would not reuse the original boot partition space but instead created a new one. I am not sure what was going on or what I did that caused this. In the end I rebooted from the liveCD and used the disk utility to manually remove all of the partitions on the HDD and then re-installed from the minimal DVD. updating pandoc and converting to UTF-8

Hi guys, I need to run pandoc. (http://johnmacfarlane.net/pandoc/installing.html) I did this: rpm -ivh http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm yum install -y pandoc This is version 1.9.4.1 They are up to 13.1.1. How can I update to the latest? Yum doesn't have anything more that I can see. Also, is there a tool like 'iconv' on OS X where I can convert between encodings? It seems when moving this from OS X to Linux I am getting a few encoding errors when building my project. Thoughts are appreciated. Jason

Mount iPhone ios-8 on CentOS-7

Yesterday I upgraded my Iphone to ios8 for Redphone/Signal and just now have discovered that I no longer can mount the iPhone as a USB device to effect data transfers from the camera roll. Googling around has not revealed any RHEL/CentOS specific fixes although apparently Ubuntu has done something on the matter. CentOS 7 Manual Install

I am following the instructions from the CentOS website to manually install CentOS 7 (http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/ManualInstall) but the guide seems to have some quality issues. I've partitioned the storage fine and now onto setting up RPM. Unfortunately I am at a loss on how to do this. I am doing this on VMware Workstation 10 and the host OS is Ubuntu 14.04. Thanks Parvez

Samba guest no write access after update to samba -3.6.23-12.el6.x86_64

I have an established server initially created with CentOS 6.5 and updated weekly. Last week there was a massive update that I believe upgraded my server to 6.6. I had a number of issues after the upgrade---like my firewall being turned on and blocking all inbound ports. (I have an external firewall.) I've fixed all the issues created by this upgrade except for one. I have a number of samba shares on this server used by some WinXP boxes on my network and two other linux (Fedora) workstations. Since the upgrade, guest/nobody write access no longer works. The smb.conf file is unchanged. The config file below has been unchanged since my initial installation. Anyone know how I can restore guest write access? Guest can read, but not write to the share.
