What I am unable to do is to get any response to any of the questions I have posted respecting the errors I have encountered. I get nothing. It is as if I had never written. So, I am seeking an alternative support venue, if such exists, where I might get some answers. Centos-compatible motherboards

Hi all! I'm toying with the idea of spending some Christmas money on a new MB and CPU to upgrade my desktop. Although I've always been partial to AMD chips, I'm tempted this time to find something Intel-ish, I5, quad core, or so. In looking at mommyboards at New Egg and Amazon, I find so many I am unable to make reasonable determinations regarding suitability, so am hoping some of you who have new(ish) intel-compatible boards could offer some hints. Also, I'd like to keep the cost of MB, CPU and RAM to no more (or little more) than $300-350. (seeing as how apparently mid-range I5 chips cost over 200 each, that may be a vain hope.) I expect that the newest ones may work with something bleeding edge like Fedora (et al), but I like centos for my desktop since it doesn't have the ridiculous churn rate of the more aggressive distros. I can't bring myself to relish the thought of rebuilding my main desktop twice a year (or even once a year). So, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! usb umts stick recommendation for centos 6

Hi, we have a DSL outage in our office, which will last for one week. So I have to use an usb umts stick, can someone recommend a stick / provider for germany? Maybe which works out of the box? I know O2 has explicit Linux support but only Fedora 16 and up.... Thx Rainer

A puzzle with grub-install

I ran into a problem when using grub-install experimentally in what is obviously a foolish way, since I was unable to boot the machine afterwards. I got round the problem, as I shall explain, but I'm still interested to know why the problem arose. Having added a second hard disk to my CentOS-6.5 server, as an experiment I gave the command grub-install /dev/sdb after checking (with fdisk) that the new disk was indeed sdb, while the disk on which CentOS is running remains sda. I assumed that this would leave the MBR on sda unchanged, so that I would be able to boot to the current system as before. But I found that this was not the case; on rebooting the machine hung, with a repeating "-" on the screen. The only way I was able to recover the current system was to use a CentOS Live USB stick I had to install CentOS on a spare partition (sda12). With that system running I was able to mount the old system (on sdb10) as /mnt, and the boot partition (sdb2) as /mnt/boot, and then give the command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda On re-booting the old system came up. (I may say I also tried to run grub-install from the USB stick, but was completely unable to do this so as to re-install the old system. Basically, the old disk had become sdb, while the USB stick was sda. So I mounted /dev/sdb10 as /mnt and /dev/sdb2 as /mnt/boot, and gave the command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb I then removed the USB stick, and tried - unsuccessfully - to re-start the machine.) But I'm puzzled by my experience, which seems to suggest that running grub-install /dev/sdb actually affects the MBR on sda. OT hard disk geometry

My only excuse for asking this question here is that I am running CentOS-6.5 on my HP MicroServer. I recently purchased a 2TB WD hard drive (WD20ESRX), and was surprised to find that the power-connector on this drive did not seem to be in the correct place for the drive-bay. (The drive bay closes, but the disk does not spin.) The power connector on the drive is further from the SATA connectors than on the other 4 drives I have in my two MicroServers - it is about 2/3 of the way across the back of the drive, on the opposite side to the SATA connectors. I'm surprised because I always thought that the positions of the connectors on SATA hard drives was standard. How can I find whether or not a hard drive will connect properly in the drive-bay? bind (named) compromised?

I'm having problems where my upstream bandwidth is being saturated. I've narrowed it down to a DNS issue of some type. If I stop the named service then my bandwidth drops to "normal" according to my untangle firewall. I'm running bind-9.3.6-20.P1.el5_8.6. # ipsec verify ... If you encounter network related SElinux errors, especially when using KLIPS, try disabling SElinux ... Well, it is not running KLIPS but netkey, anyways I feel not comfortable about disabling selinux on a ipsec router. I am not sure how to handle possible probems in this case, too. If I decide not to disable selinux, and I run into problems, should I a) report it to redhat as a bug, because it is b) disable selinux because ipsec is not meant to work with selinux Maybe just the verify script should be fixed? Maybe I should ask RedHat about this, hm. And finally, do you encounter network related SElinux errors with IPSec, both 5 and 6? -- Kind Regards, Markus
