xfce on CentOS 7: can't lock screen

Ok, trying to bypass the usual flames (I used CDE for years, then KDE until it got dumbed-down too much, and we all know how GNOME has turned out) ... I've decided to try out xfce on CentOS 7. I grabbed xfce from epel by installing the following via yum: epel-release @xfce So far it's pretty good, and is giving me the basic features I'm looking at without getting in my way. However, I can't seem to get the damned screen lock function to work. Leaving the monitor idle doesn't generally do anything. (Although just now, after having left it for a few hours, I got a blank screen with a few vertical narrow white bars that wouldn't respond to any key or mouse movement. Switching to a text console and back to the graphics console, however, brought up the xfce desktop again, but with no screen lock prompt.) If I select the 'Lock Screen' menu item from the top right corner of the screen it does nothing; doesn't lock the screen, provides no feedback that there's a problem, etc. The page <http://xmodulo.com/control-screen-lock-settings-linux-desktop.html> describes (for XFCE) bring up "Settings Manager" => "Screen Saver", but there is no "Screen Saver" option in the Settings Manager. A clue stick would be appreciated. Devin

High Performance graphics virtual environment: VGA Passthough or a VDI solution

Hello Early this summer I made the decision to eliminate my Windows dual boot, I rarely used windows. I have started a new job which will require using a 3d CAD Inventor/Solidworks (Windows software). Inventor starts in vmware workstation. I also switched from OpenSuSE to CentOS after evaluating Ubuntu, RHEL, SLED, and Centos, I wanted a more proven platform, less experimental stuff. For the last several years I have been wanting to build a multi-seat computer. I did configure a mulit-seat using xorg, it work ok but there were issue with the keyboard and the kernel reported many error. I used the dual seat system for play internet content to a tv but I do not think this solution would work well for multiple desktops. VGA Pass-through Redhat blog claims the beta release supports vga pass-through: http://rhelblog.redhat.com/2014/01/29/kvm-virtualization/ Is this true? I hope to find a cheaper video card then the professional NVIDA. Can VGA pass-through be accomplished using the application provide by CentOS 7? Or do I need to apply all the patches and recompile as suggested in the article below? http://www.firewing1.com/howtos/fedora-20/create-gaming-virtual-machine-usi… VDI This solution provides each terminal with it own dedicated devices. Many of the problems with the muli-seat configuration I used in the past was related to sharing usb device on multiple terminals. The thin client resolves all of those problems. I think VDI solution easier for my wife and daughter to use than the VGA pass through. Thin client will located the terminal in a different rooms. Now the fun part Xen or oVirt KVM. I preference for KVM the kernel module seem to work better. I have had problem with Xen. Does anyone have suggestion for a small home deployment. This is not practical but I have this supper fast computer I like to use and I want to postpone purchasing a Apple laptop for as long as possible. The skills developed in this project can be indirectly applied at work. Thank you Aaron

systemd startup on centos 7

Ok I created my script this morning [Unit] Description=Connections After=network.target [Service] Type=notify ExecStart=/home/silentm/bin/mystart [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target I put it in the correct directory, I rebooted and I see that my mystart script runs- programs start up but then they are killed with signal 15... Is there something else that allows them to continue to run? the mystart runs the needed programs then it does exit. I presume that mystart exit is killing the children. Whats the magic to let the children continue.? Thanks Jerry

Text file encoding

I'm working with some people using apple laptops. When we share text files (latex files), I reach in an encoding problem on our CentOS laptops and desktops. In my favorite editor, "é" is "<8e>", "à" is "<88>" etc... Of course, I can change the encoding with iconv: iconv -f MACINTOSH -t ISO8859-15 file.bib.mac >file.bib iconv -f ISO8859-15 -t MACINTOSH file.bib >file.bib.mac But it is a little tedious to work like this... Runing pdflatex (in CentOS) on these files written on apple laptops works fine with \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc} So the main problem is an editor problem. I've tried several ones (nedit, gedit, kate, vim...) none of them seams to support this encoding. But may be it is a configuration problem ? Any idea ? Thanks Patrick

Needs: i686 without pae (nonpae kernel)

Hi folks, just curious about the requirement having a nonpae kernel for i686 hw (el6). Are there any one outside that have the need for such a kernel? It would be great having such kernels in the plus channel (yum). -- Thanks, LF

CentOS Update

Hello. Previously debian, ubuntu, opensuse, I've used. But I'm new to CentOS too. I do not install desktop environment. Servers want to learn. I can not update the system. I could not so I researched. I give the following command . "yum update". I get the error. I'm working on a virtual machine. (I do not know English. Translation I wrote using.) One of the configured repositories failed (hand), and yum does not have enough cached data to continue. At this point the only yum can do is fail safe thing. There are a few ways to work "fix" this: 1 Contact the repository for the upstream and get them to fix the problem. 2 Reconfigure the BaseURL / etc. for the repository, to point to a working upstream. This is most often the Useful if you are using a new release distribution than is supported by the repository (and the for the previous release distribution packages still work). 3 Disable the repository, so yum will not use it by default. When will the Yuma just ignore the repository until you enable it again or use permanently --enablerepo for temporary usage: yum-config-manager --disable hand 4 Configure the repository failing to be skipped, if it is unavailable . Note that yum will try to contact the repo. most commands when it runs, so will have to try and fail each time (and plenty of sunshine. Yum Will be much slower). If it is a very temporary problem, though, this is often a nice compromise: yum-config-manager of --sav --setopt = el.skip_if_unavailabl = true Connot find a valid baseurl for repo: base / 7x86_64 "vi" with CentOS-Base.repo, CentOS-Debuginfo.repo, CentOS-Vault.repo, CentOS -Sources.repo files "enabled = 1" line as I did. But "soft repolist all" command when I type "status = 0" is displayed.

The source code was not modified, but the packages in the build root are the current CentOS-5.10 packages. There is also a set of packages built against the upcoming CentOS-5.11 with a ".el5_11" dist tag that will be an upgrade when 5.11 is released and all the packages in that build root are from the upcoming CentOS-5.11 release. The ".el5_11" announcement and package will be done as a zero-day update to CentOS-5.11. There is a README file on CentOS 7 in /etc/init.d that says Note that traditional init scripts continue to function on a systemd system. An init script /etc/rc.d/init.d/foobar is implicitly mapped into a service unit foobar.service during system initilization So I dropped my file in the above directory, rebooted and my item did not start. doing "systemctl list-unit-files | grep myservice" did now show anything. What piece did I miss? I used to use rc.local and just need a script to run AFTER everything else has ran. no special start/stop/reload is needed... just a simple script. Thanks jerry
