Memory vs. Display Card

Since memory has become quite cheap lately I decided to move from 2 GB to 6. When I installed the memory every thing was fine until I went to run level 5. At that point the screen turned to garbage and the system froze. Is there a way to fix this so I can use the memory I bought? Do I need a new display card? SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. LUKS encypted partition using --key-file can only be decrypted with --key-file

This worked fine, and I can decrypt the LUKS partition via script and manually using --key-file with luksOpen. The odd problem is that I can't decrypt the partition using the prompt. If I manually create a file with the passphrase in it and then point to it with --key-file, it decrypts fine. I used 'cat -A /tmp/foo' to verify that there was no '\n' at the end of the phrase. Is this expected behaviour? That is; If you create an encrypted partition using --key-file, you always decrypt with the same? If so, I can't understand the logic... If not, then I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Hi, all! How to setup own i686 mock for CentOS7? Or, is there any public i686 repo for CentOS7? I found i686 repo available in internal CentOS building environment, from a root.log from a mock build result[1]. whois command in c6

the whois command in c6 references whois.v6nic.net for ip addresses in the 43.0.0.0/8 range (and maybe others). v6nic is no longer a valid whois server, any nets delegated to it should instead be delegated to apnic. i have no upstream connections... this change was made in the generic sources for jwhois some time ago I see this fix was introduced in F20 here, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1121512 -- john r pierce, recycling bits in santa cruz

Mail Merge data to a pdf file by overlaying the data on the image

Everyone, I am looking for a utility that I can use to do a mail merge of data to a pdf image file. The image file does not have any active fields, but will be just an image file. I would like to overlay names addresses etc. We currently do this with a pcl file by just overlaying the data with pcl print positions. However, in order to get the pcl file from an original pdf file we have to use gimp to convert the pdf to pcl file, and we always lose a little resolution. I was wondering if anyone knows of a utility to perform this function without first converting the image to a pcl file. Thanks, -- Greg Ennis

Openssl C6 distro tag different from upstream

Hi, Just noticed that the distro tag used in openssl is different from upstream. Upstream and the last update (openssl-1.0.1e-30.el6_6.7) use "el6_6" where as the latest update (openssl-1.0.1e-30.el6.8) uses "el_6". Any reason for this discrepancy? Cannot remount drive after lost iSCSI connection

Hi all, We've having an issue at the moment where an iSCSI connection was temporarily lost on a few VMs running CentOS 6 on ESXi. The problem is, now that the iSCSI connection has returned, we are not able to remount the drive. At first the drive is read-only, so I tried '*mount -o remount,rw*' which didn't work (still read-only), so then I tried a '*umount*' (which worked), but now I get the following error when trying to mount it again: root@server [~]# mount /backup/ mount: /dev/sdb1 already mounted or /backup busy root@server [~]# mount /dev/sdb1 mount: /dev/sdb1 already mounted or /backup busy I have also tried '*echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/scan*' and checked to see if any processes were using /dev/sdb1 or /backup using ' *fuser*' and '*lsof*'. I know a reboot will solve it, but I'm trying to avoid that as best I can, so I'm wondering if anyone else has any other ideas?
