Did some more digging this morning. All physical machines are quite okay with the 6.8 upgrade. All virtual machines running on Hyper-V get a kernel panic - if the linux integration services (lis) are installed on the guest. Uninstalling lis, then applying the kernel-2.6.32-642.el6.x86_64 and rebooting works just fine. No kernel panics. Supposedly (according to some forum posts I read) the lis shouldn't care what kernel is actually running, as long as it is compiled with a kernel that is installed and available on the system, in this case the last previous before the 6.8-upgrade. Recommendations for Infiniband with CentOS 6.7

Hi All, We looking for suggestions on dealing with mellanox drivers in CentOS 6.7 We tried installing mellanox drivers (MLNX_OFED_LINUX-3.2-2.0.0.0-rhel6.7-x86_64) on a Quanta Cirrascale server running Centos 6.7 - 2.6.32-573.22.1.el6.x86_64. When we rebooted the machine after installing the drivers, it went into a kernel panic for every installed kernel except for Centos 6.7 2.6.32-573.22.1.el6.x86_64.debug. After we uninstalled the drivers, the machine failed to boot for any installed kernel. Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. centos7 tmpfiles.d deleted outdate files

Hi all, I use centos7 and don't want to use tmpwatch as well as crond. I have a question to use `systemd-tmpfiles-clean.service` with my custom configured file in `tmpfiles.d` to delete outdated files periodically in some log dir. I have a `tmpfiles.d` configured file in `/etc/tmpfiles.d` named `my_log.conf` in following contents. ``` #Type Path Mode UID GID Age Arg r /chenqiang 0775 root root 10s r /chenqiang/test_10s r /chenqiang/test_20s ``` If I run `systemd-tmpfiles --remove` with above configure, all files and dir will be deleted if I set 'r' type for the files and dir. but, I want to only delete some outdated files in the dir. and I use `systemd-tmpfiles --clean` with following configure. ``` #Type Path Mode UID GID Age Arg d /chenqiang 0775 root root 10s f /chenqiang/test_10s 0660 root root 10s f /chenqiang/test_20s 0660 root root 20s ``` It can delete dir if the age > 10s, but can't delete the files in it. In my view, the introduction of a new name was completely unnecessary and the cause of the only (small) complication with the changeover, eg should I look in /etc/yum.repos.d/ or /etc/dnf.repos.d/ ? dnf replacing yum?

I saw mention of dnf in a blog article about installing a package on CentOS. Further investigation revealed that Fedora is replacing yum with dnf, apparently a new and better yum. But it wasn't clear if dnf was a drop-in replacement or if some migration setup was required. Is it supposed to work with CentOS or do we ignore it until some future release? <https://www.linux.com/learn/what-you-need-know-about-fedoras-switch-yum-dnf> I installed dnf with yum and tried installing another package with it and it complains: [root@orifice ~]# dnf install certbot Failed to open: /var/cache/dnf/x86_64/7/x86_64/7/epel/repodata/b3221500eaedf45b7ec0737a410cde7e3f09b49070c729449938b961ccbdf397-updateinfo.xml.bz2. I don't install new packages often, but it does sound like dnf's new dep solver is a Good Thing when that's needed.

CentOS 7 + GUI as KVM guest: fix screen resolution

Hi, I'd like to run CentOS 7 in a KVM guest (host is my Slackware64 14.1 workstation). The main purpose of this installation will be to build custom RPM packages. I've made a few tests, and everything works more or less as expected. I'd like to resolve a small problem that's nagging me though. When I install a GUI, I usually start by installing a minimal system, then I add some command-line tools, then the X Window System, then I add a lightweight window manager like WindowMaker to configure X, and then only I install GNOME, the base desktop and only the applications I need. So far this works quite well. I just made a first installation of CentOS + X11 + WindowMaker in a KVM guest, and I have some small resolution problems. I have a twin-monitor setup, with the left 19" monitor displaying the host system, and the right 19" monitor the guest system. The "ideal" resolution for this type of monitor is 1280x1024. Now when I start WindowMaker in the guest system, I get a weird resolution, something like 1024x600: looks like 1024x768, only it gets squashed down to what looks like 16/9. The top and bottom borders of the screen are black, a bit like a cinemascope movie. Now I tried to make a second "vanilla" installation of CentOS in another KVM guest. This time I installed the default GNOME GUI. After the initial reboot, GDM has the same weird resolution (1024x600 I guess), and GNOME starts up with this same resolution also. BUT: I can go to the Monitor Settings, and define 1280x1024 as resolution, and this works perfectly. Unfortunately this solution only seems to work on a per-user basis, and only in GNOME. So here's my question: - How did GNOME do that (redefine my monitor resolution on the fly)? - Is there a way to achieve this new resolution system-wide, and also for WindowMaker? I tried to fiddle a bit with xorg.conf (X -configure, copy it over, edit it), but to no avail. CentOS 7, container question

Hi, folks, We would like to run a container on a server, the reason being the COST of a Sybase license (it's by core), and what we can afford is a 4-core license. Now, the server's a nice Dell w/ 32 cores, so, ideally, what we want to do is set up containers, then, in one container, *only* have it see 4 cores, while the rest of the server, including (possibly) other containers, can see the other 28. The first try seems to have disabled *all* the cores other than those four. Is it possible to do what we want, and if so, some pointers would be most appreciated. mark
