Various applications freeze regularly since CentOS 7.5 update

Hi, since we have upgraded to CentOS 7.5 (from CentOS 7.4), we experience frequent, but not reproducible, freezes of various applications: Thunderbird, Firefox, LibreOffice. Usually the application process keeps running with PPID 1 w/o being killable (not even with SIGKILL). Freezes of Thunderbird are usually followed by Firefox crashing a few minutes later. The only possible solution we found is a complete workstation reboot :-(. Other problems are that many Gnome extensions are not working any more and also cannot be installed from extensions.gnome.org any more and logging in via gdm (LDAP, homedirectories on NFS share) is considerably slower than with 7.4. I don't know if these issues are related, if they are symptoms of a more global problem and I am at a loss on how to debug them, as they appear from time to time but not not reproducibly.. Any hints or reports of own experiences are highly appreciated. Cheers frank

Clone a custom CentOS 7 desktop using G4L over FTP

Hi, A couple months ago, I migrated our local school (two servers, 20 desktop clients) from Slackware 14.1 to CentOS 7. The desktop clients are running a customized lightweight desktop based on Xfce: https://blog.microlinux.fr/poste-de-travail-xfce-centos-7/ Home directories are all on the server, and authentication is centralized. Everything works fine so far. With Slackware I had found a neat trick to install the desktop clients. First I installed and configured one single client PC from start to finish. The I zeroed all the unused sectors on the disk, using something like this: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/0bits bs=20M ; rm -f /0bits Then I sent the disk image to a local FTP server using G4L (Ghost4Linux). On all the other desktops PCs, I could then "import" the G4L image, and the system was ready to use. Under Slackware, the only thing I had to make sure was to remove the one bit of hardcoded system information before uploading the image: # rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules Now I tried to do this with CentOS, but I failed miserably. The system wouldn't even start, since GRUB uses UUIDs and not /dev/sdX like Slackware's bone-headed LILO boot manager. So here's my question to the guru admins on this list. On a standard CentOS desktop, what would I have to tweak in order to be able to clone my system bit for bit, as is ? Yum list installed lies to me

Vsftpd vs. iptables firewall script

Hi, I'm currently setting up a local FTP server, to receive disk images sent with G4L (Ghost4Linux). This server has been running Slackware Linux before, and the Vsftpd setup was relatively simple. With CentOS things seem to be slightly different, so I'm currently trying to work things out. For the moment, two things seem to be creating problems, the simple iptables firewall and SELinux. When I disable the firewall and SELinux, Vsftp works as expected. So far so good. Now let's tackle this one dragon at a time. First the firewall. I'm starting with a very simple firewall script that looks somewhat like this. I'm linking to the template, I won't copy/paste the whole thing here. https://github.com/kikinovak/centos-7-server-lan/blob/master/config/firewal… Under Slackware, the iptables rule for a local FTP server looked like this: modprobe ip_conntrack iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -i $IFACE_LAN --dport 21 -j ACCEPT I tried this, but to no avail. Can't connect to my server. I googled a bit, and I found out that there seem to be quite many different answers about the subject of "how do I configure my firewall for Vsftpd". Any suggestions ? Update announcement request

Hi, Can the updated files added to the Centosplus repo be sent to the announcement list please? I can't find them announced in any of the other lists. Related to that, a new kernel was released to the Centosplus repo, kernel-plus-3.10.0-862.2.3.el7.centos.plus, but perf and python-perf were not updated for the new kernel. New mail server slow connecting to web server

Having successfully killed my (Centos 7) mail server I have had to build a new one. Thankfully I had a server build that I was about to start configuring as my new web server. I appear to have set everything up okay, Exim, SpamAssassin, ClamAv, Dovecot, Postgresql, httpd etc. Everything appears fine apart from when I try to connect to my web server. Whatever tried to connect suffers from a delay, and either times out or works eventually. I started off with problems connecting Exim to Postgresql on the web server. I then found that I couldn't connect using psql, or using Perl DBD-Pg. I then found I couldn't SSH or SCP, dispite them both being on the same subnet. The more I use the new system, better it appears to be, but the delay is still there. name resolution isn't the problem as I can nslookup both ways without problems, and specifying IP addresses makes no difference. For testing I have disabled the firewall and selinux and that made no difference. If I try to connect the other way there is no delay, but I cannot access the Postgresql server on my new mail server from the web server. Anyone got any ideas?

How to build nss-util.i686 on Centos 7 with mock

Hello list, I'm currently trying to build the i686 version of http://vault.centos.org/7.5.1804/os/Source/SPackages/nss-util-3.34.0-2.el7.… The x86_86 version works with mock, but I cannot figure out how to build the i686 version. best regards, Martin

CentOS 7 system unsable after "yum update" (with some errors on the way)

God dag, I've been trying to run a "yum update" (without additional arguments) to install the latest system updates on my CentOS 7 machine. It's no going so well. What happens is this: 1. The process gets stuck a couple of places as a "post" script or similar tries to run "dbus-send"; the problem looks awfully similar to what's described in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1186018. More specifically, this happens on installation of package "setroubleshoot" and "avahi". As a workaround, I'm using a manual kill to get rid of the hung process. 2. There is a similar hang related to "systemctl try-restart". This happens on "wpa_supplicant" clean-up. 3. When I restart the system after the installation is done (with work-arounds), it won't boot properly - I don't get a login screen or console login prompt. I notice two error messages on the boot console: Failed to start login service Failed to start WPA supplicant daemon I've tried the operation twice with the same result. First time was just after the release of CentOS 7.5, I believe. I've done similar upgrades before that, too, and they've completed without problems. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas what I can do to make the system usable again, besides restoring from back-up (as I'm doing now)? There is info on the net that suggests that the problem is related to SELinux and that a relabel operation and/or policy change would help, but I tried all sorts of things related to that the first time around, and nothing seemed to help. (I was working partly in rescue mode booted from an installer USB and partly in single user mode, which does work.) TIA - Toralf
