RHEL/CentOS 8.x, KDE & EPEL

Hi, A question to those familiar with third party repository policy. You think there's a real chance KDE's Plasma 5 desktop will be made available by EPEL or some other third party repository for CentOS 8.x? I'm asking because up until recently one of my desktop configurations was based on CentOS 7 and KDE 4. My users really like the KDE desktop (like myself). I rebased most of my desktop configurations on OpenSUSE Leap when Red Hat announced it would drop KDE, but it would be nice to have something that's a bit less of a moving target. boot issue with latest kernel

Hi all, Has anyone seen this issue before? This afternoon, I tried updating a bare metal CentOS 6 box, and got some odd error messages on the console during booting kernel 2.6.32-754.11.1. (These aren't exact, I forgot to try to get a photo of the console.) sd 0:0:4:0 timed out resetting card 3w-sas timed out resetting card Then the boot would simply hang, with no obvious disk activity on the drives and no other messages on the console. Reverting back to an earlier kernel (2.6.32-431.17.1) was perfectly fine. (Obviously this is quite old hardware, but until today had never had problems.) I noticed in the CentOS 6.10 changelog that 3w-sas has been deprecated, but that it should still be supported. And even if 3w-sas had been removed, I don't think that wouldn't explain timeouts on sd. I have done a bunch of searches on the CentOS forums and on the web, but didn't find anything specific to this issue with various combinations of the error message keywords. How to disable wifi access to CentOS 7

Hello all -- I run a hard wired network connection from my box and I don't want/need any wifi connections trying to get to/from it. I came across this article from the RedHat Bugzilla site -- https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1530391 I would love to just uninstall NetworkManager-wifi as suggested in the last comment on this issue. The problem is when I try to do that, there's about 25 dependencies on this package! Any thoughts on how to get around this? Gnome-tweak-tool-3.28.1 Update Results in Black Screen

Hello all, The most recent update of Gnome-tweak-tool-3.28.1-2el7.2.noarch.rpm is causing a black screen at startup. After clicking on the menu in Grub I get a black screen. I've tried setting the "systemctl set-default multi-user.target" in the kernel parameters but still a black screen. I then tried the Rescue boot in Grub but again a black screen. This issue started after Gnome-tweak-tool was updated an hour ago. I had CentOS 7.6 running fine earlier this morning but after updating Gnome-tweak-tool just a black screen. Has anyone else come across this issue recently, and if so how did you fix it? I don't want to have to re-install CentOS 7.6. Thank you, Brian Bernard

Gantt chart software for CentOS 7 ?

Hi, I'm looking for a Gantt chart software that I can install easily on CentOS 7. I prefer EPEL - or some other third party repo - packages than some obscure installation script for home directories. Any suggestions ? nvidia on 7.6

I have elrepo installed. rpm -qa | grep elrepo gives elrepo-release-7.0.3.el7.elrepo.noarch nvidia detect (which installed) tells me kmod-nvidia-340xx when I do yum install kmod-nvidia-340xx it is saying no package kmod-nvidia-340xx available ? What did I miss? Thanks, Jerry

Testing software on CentOS 7

I need to test a new version of Geany but already have the repo version installed on all my systems. In order not to foul up my current installation, what is the suggested procedure for installing and testing this new version? I tried installing in a docker container which of course went fine but could not run it from there. Suggestions appreciated, thank you.

konqueror vs. centos and mathematics

I'm running centos 7. Firefox spends so much time in th D state that I am trying konqueror. Displaying mathematics on wikipedia, e.g. Remez algorithm seems to be a no go. Wikipedia seems to use tex, so I installed texlive and texlive-* . Firefox hadn't needed it and it did not seem to help konqueror. My guess is that there is a bit somewhere that I need to flip, but I have no idea where it is. PHP 7.x on CentOS 7 : which solution ?

Hi, As you all know, CentOS 7 is shipping PHP 5.4, which is OK in some situations. Unfortunately, some applications like OwnCloud require a more recent version of PHP. Up until recently, I've been using PHP 5.6 packages from the Webtatic repository. Despite the bad press this third party repo seems to have, it has been working perfectly for me for a few years. So I googled "php 7 centos 7" and found quite a wealth of - sometimes contradictory - information. 1. The "recommended" way of doing things seems to be the Red Hat Software Collections. Correct me if I'm wrong. I wonder if this way of doing things will enable me to get all the PHP modules listed above. 2. The use of Webtatic seems to be frowned upon. I still have to figure out why, since this repository has always worked perfectly for me. 3. Then there's another repository managed by Remi Collet. Any thoughts on that? And then there's also the question : which version of PHP 7 should I choose ? On my servers, I'm mainly hosting WordPress, Dolibarr and OwnCloud. Any suggestions ? I'm no lamer for doing a bit of RTFM, so a pointer to documentation will do. The problem is not so much that there is no information on the subject. It's rather : there's too much.
