Issues booting centos7 [dracut is failing to enable centos/root, centos/swap LVs]

Hello, I'm having a strange problem booting a new centos7 installation. Below some background on this. [I have attached the tech details at the bottom of this message] I started a new CentOS7 installation on a VM, so far all good, o/s boots fine. Then I decided to increase VM disk size (initially was 10G) to 13G. Powered off the VM, increased the vhd via the hypervisor, booted from CentOS livecd, selected "recover my centos installation". Then I used the following sequence of commands to make the new vhd size "visible" to the o/s ... - ran fdisk /dev/sda and deleted partition 2. (This is the LVM partition where the o/s is stored. The first partition is /boot [xfs] partition *non lvm*.) - created a new partition with same starting sector as before deleting it, but a different ending sector (to reflect to the increased space). - set partition type to 8e (lvm), saved settings and exit. - ran pvresize and lvresize to make new space visible to the o/s.All good, I can see the space increase on 'lvdisplay centos/root'. - ran 'mount /dev/mapper/centos-root /mnt/root' to temporarily mount the o/s partition. - ran 'xfs_growfs /mnt/root' to resize the o/s fs to the new size. It was successful and I could actually chroot to the o/s and verify new disk size. - rebooted and tried to boot from hdd this time. Grub menu shows up and loads default kernel (3.10.0-862.9.1.el7.x86_64). - after initial kernel boot up process, booting continues to initrd and then it's where the problem starts... - looks like dracut has issues locating/enabling /dev/mapper/centos-root (lv) and as a result it cannot boot to the 'real' root fs (/). - while in dracut shell, I execute the following command sequence: 1. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/root 2. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/swap 3. ln -s /dev/mapper/centos-root /dev/root 4. exit ...and the o/s boots fine...so looks like the pv,vg,lv is detected properly while in initrd, but somehow dracut has difficulties enabling the root,swap LVs ? - While in o/s, I rebuild initrd by using: 'dracut -f -v -a lvm' Note, I have to use '-a lvm' as for some reason, if don't, the lvm utils (lvm,lvm_scan) are not being included to the initrd, not sure why this happens. After rebooting, same thing happens, I have to manually boot the system via dracut shell. I'm a bit stuck at this point, any clues what I'm doing wrong in here ? Did you add this host to a Windows NT domain, using "net join ..."?

CentOS 7.6 1810 vs. VirtualBox : bug with keyboard layout selection

Hi, I'm currently working on my next Linux book, which will be an elementary course about CentOS administration. I'm using VirtualBox for all the installer screenshots. Since CentOS has recently been upgraded to version 7.6, I thought I might as well base all book references on this version. So I downloaded the 7.6 1810 minimal ISO and started a fresh installation in VirtualBox. I'm using a Swiss French keyboard layout (ch-fr or fr_CH-latin1), so one of the first things I do in the installer is replace the default French AZERTY keyboard (since I use the french language) by a swiss french QWERTZ layout. Now when I reach this dialog in the installer and try do define my new layout, the slider in the selection window doesn't appear, and clicking on any of the first layouts doesn't do anything, so I'm basically stuck there. I'm running OpenSUSE Leap 15.0 KDE on my workstation, so I tried the same thing with the previous CentOS 7.5 1804 minimal ISO, and the keyboard selection dialog works perfectly. So my intuition would tell me that there's a nasty bug in the CentOS 7.6 installer. Maybe it went unnoticed, since most folks stick to the default keyboard layout selected in their language. Any suggestions ? CentOS 7 as a Fibre Channel SAN Target

For quite some time I’ve been using FreeNAS to provide services as a NAS over ethernet and SAN over Fibre Channel to CentOS 7 servers each using their own export, not sharing the same one. It’s time for me to replace my hardware and I have a new R720XD that I’d like to use in the same capacity but configure CentOS 7 as a Fibre Channel target rather than use FreeNAS any further. I’m doing virtualization and this will allow me to have failover from one node to the other since they’ll all be sharing the same export rather than me simply backing up to the FreeNAS server the way I am now. Does anyone know of any really good current articles that explain how to set up CentOS 7 as the target in such a configuration and also setting up CLVMd so they can all share an export over Fibre Channel from CentOS 7? UEFI and PXE

We have a working PXE setup. I've tried to adapt it to UEFI as per RHEL6 manual, but the client won't boot. Strangely, tcpdump shows that the client tries to download all files via tftp from the dhcp server rather than the tftp server (they are different). next-server is pointing to the tftp server. Any clues?

Centos 7 on Dell Latitude E6500

Hi, I tried to install Centos7 x86_64 minimal 1503-01 from an USB flash drive on my old Dell Latitude E6500 laptop. boots up in text mode, switches text resolution, writes: Started Show Plymouth Boot Screen Reached Target Paths Reached Target Basic System. then hangs for some time, eventually starting dracut emergency shell. log says: multipathd: sdb: spurious uevent, path already in pathvec multipathd: sda: spurious uevent, path already in pathvec interesting: sdb is the internal 240GB kingston SSD drive (existing ntfs bitlocker partition recognized as sdb1) sda is the write protected USB stick, recognised as CDROM drive. 4GB rom intel 45 express chipset mobile intel GMA 4500MHD graphics intel 5100AGN wifi what to try next? any additional infos I can give you? thnx in advance. -- Best regards, Rainer mailto:rfu@oudeis.org

/boot partition too small

First off - let me say I am not an administrator. I need to know if there is an easy way to increase my /boot partition. When I installed CentOS 6 after running 5, it was my oversight not to increase the /boot size. it's too small and I can't do yum updates. if it's not easy to actually increase it, is it safe to take a chunk in my root filesystem (like /new.boot or something) and just mount it as /boot from now on so it uses the space or is that not a good idea? I am sure I could easily copy the rpms/kernel stuff over to it and then unmounts the real /boot and mount this new area as /boot. Can you administrators let me know what you think of all this? Mate on Centos 7

I have been running Mate on Centos 7 for some time but it does not work very well on my HiDPI laptop screen. Today I found that I am running version 1.16 of Mate whereas the current version is 1.22. Undoubtedly many of the issues have been fixed since 1.16 was released in 2016... However, EPEL only provides 1.16 - a release from 2016 - and nothing later. What is the recommended way to upgrade to 1.22?

CentOS 8 partiitioning for reliability

I was just given a Dell R720xd with 160 GB memory and 12x 900 GB drives that I plan to deploy as my home mail/file/backup server to replace an aging Supermicro server running CentOS 7. Yeah, it's gross overkill for that and I expect to tuck most of the drives away for spares. How should I RAID and partition this beast for maximum reliability? My current C7 system is using 1 TB of 2 TB capacity on the root partition (4x 1 TB drives in RAID 10). /boot is 300MB/50GB. Memory and swap is 8GB each.

Installation question?

I've been doing a CentOS 7.6.1810 net-install since last night. The machine seems ok but has been stuck with "performing post-installation setup tasks" for hours. This is an old Dell T5400 box, so it isn't blazing fast but ... Is there a way to pull up its skirt (so to speak) and check/monitor the installation activity while installing it? Having already started the installation? BTW, in the phase of the install process, is it still hitting the net?

Moved a server from the datacenter to our secure room. I've changed the DNS, and our dhcpd... and yet, every time it boots, it comes up with the IP it had in the datacenter. Any idea where it could be caching the IP - maybe in the initramfs? C 7, updated. mark

how to increase DNS reliability?

Hi, how can DNS reliability, as experienced by clients on the LAN who are sending queries, be increased? Would I have to set up some sort of cluster consisting of several servers all providing DNS services which is reachable under a single IP address known to the clients? Just setting up several name servers and making them known to the clients for the clients to automatically switch isn't a good solution because the clients take their timeouts and users lacking even the most basic knowledge inevitably panic when the first name server does not answer queries.

Has anyone used fastboot together with the Google Pixel 3a/3a XL phone? I cannot get it to be recognized and wonder if the version of fastboot available for Centos 7 may not be recent enough? It does work with older phones I have so the setup should be correct.

This is an odd one: I've got a user with a system I built recently, who comes to me to tell me the systems' frozen. I just looked this time, before I did an init 3/init 5, and you can't click on anything... except when I click on the uppermost right, and then I see wired, network and it flashes, over and over. I finally restarted X. Now, in the logs, I see a bunch of Jul 26 11:01:51 <workstation> pkexec[29723]: <username>: Executing command [USER=root] [TTY=unknown] [CWD=/home/<username>] [COMMAND=/usr/libexec/gsd-backlight-helper --set-brightness 89] What little I can find sounds as though acpi_als is for a device that's checking the ambient light... NOT for a real monitor on a workstation. The other thing is that she says she's got screensaver set for five minutes, but it seem to come up much sooner, and then we've got this issue. There were no clues in journalctl, or /var/log/messages. Questions: 1. Anyone ever seen something like this? 2. Any reason I shouldn't blacklist acpi_als? mark

Having a problem trying to complete make && make install of the bcache-tools. After going through all the dependencies and insuring they are installed on Cent 7, I get the following output on make && make install: Package blkid was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `blkid.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'blkid' found Package uuid was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `uuid.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'uuid' found Package libsodium was not found in the pkg-config search path. Failed to start crond

System gagged on bringing it up when I rebooted, until I commented it out of fstab. Now, cryptsetup gives me the same UUID as I have in /etc/mdadm.conf. The entry in /etc/crypttab looks identical to the RAIDs for root and swap, but nope. I was able to d an mdadm --assemble -u $(UUID from mdadm.conf), and then a cryptopen luks... but never got anything in /dev/mapper. I'm still fighting - any thoughts? (No, I can't reboot again, like I did this morning, it's now serving four important home directories from another pair of drives with RAID 1.) mark

Hi, what is the point of running tuned as a daemon when dynamic tuning is disabled? What is the point of enabling dynamic tuning, especially when using the supplied profiles like throughput-performance? I haven't customized those by specifying any thresholds, and I don't see any point in doing things like dynamically changing disk schedulers or CPU governors depending on something recognized by tuned. Why is there no measurable difference in power consumption between using the powersave, throughput-performance and virtual-host profiles but a very noticeable difference in performance? The difference in performance appears to depend mainly on which CPU governor is used. For example, you can make a customized profile from throughput-performance that uses the powersave governor, and performance will be very much as if using the powersave profile. Since there is no measurable difference in power consumption, why would I want to use profiles and/or CPU governors that supposedly save power and decrease performance?

SELinux settings for directory shared via NFS and samba?

Hi, what do I need to do to share the same directory with both NFS and samba? SElinux requires 'samba_share_t' for samba and 'nfs_t' for NFS, and AFAIC I can't set both at the same time on a directory.

cryptsetup

On a just-built C 7 box, I've got this: boot, boot_efi, /, swap, and export. Now, the last three are encrypted. For /, I'm trying to add an escrow key. df -h shows me that / is /dev/dm-1. However, when I use cryptsetup luksAddKey /dev/dm-1, it just comes back, without prompting me for a password. What am I missing? mark

Hi, I'm currently fine-tuning OwnCloud on a CentOS 7 server. To configure transactional locking, I need Redis with the corresponding PHP module. Until recently the server has been running PHP 7.1. I simply installed the 'redis' package as well as 'sclo-php71-php-pecl-redis', started and/or restarted a handful of services, and things worked perfectly. Now I'm upgrading my server to PHP 7.2, and it looks like there's one package missing in the Software collections. See for yourself: $ yum search php | grep sclo | grep redis sclo-php70-php-pecl-redis.x86_64 : ... sclo-php70-php-pecl-redis4.x86_64 : ... sclo-php70-php-phpiredis.x86_64 : ... sclo-php71-php-pecl-redis.x86_64 : ... sclo-php71-php-pecl-redis4.x86_64 : ... sclo-php71-php-phpiredis.x86_64 : ... sclo-php72-php-pecl-redis4.x86_64 : ... sclo-php72-php-phpiredis.x86_64 : ... As you can see, PHP 7.0 and PHP 7.1 both have three Redis-related packages, whereas PHP 7.2 only has two. It looks like I need the sclo-php72-php-pecl-redis package, but it's nowhere to be found. Any suggestions ?
