Hi all, I have a laptop in UEFI mode running CentOS 8.2. All works fine but when I enable Secure Boot, login via gdm is no longer possible. Console login is ok. I found some related discussions over on Ubuntu forums, suggesting that this could be related to 3rd-party kernel modules, such as nvidia. This laptop has only Intel builtin graphics, and every single module installed is part of the CentOS distribution. This is from a file /tmp/xses-.XXXXXX (random 6-char string) xrdb: Can't open display '' xmodmap: unable to open display '' Failed to import environment: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1 /usr/bin/xmbind: Can't open display Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused Something is different in the way Xorg is started. In this situation, the first part of the Xorg log file (under ~/.local) is a dump of X command line options. use: X [:<display>] [options] -a # ... -ac ... ...

Missing the old sytle gnome-software in CentOS 8 -- help!

Hello folks -- I recently got a new laptop and installed CentOS8 on it. Yes, it's a learning curve. What I am really upset/disappointed with is the "new" gnome-software application. It doesn't provide nearly the functionaility of the older gnome 3.28 app. Yes, I do know how to list EVERYTHING via the command line but the ease of listing files etc associated with a packages is now gone. Any ideas on a different app, plugins, extensions greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help. -- "DO or DO NOT; there is no try." -- Yoda Kay

Apache HTTPD not picking up environment variables.

I'm trying to install DB2 on a CentOS 7 server. The problem I'm seeing is that the Apache httpd server fails to pick up the db2 environment variables. On an older version running under CentOS 5 this was done by inserting the following lines into the httpd start script in /etc/sysconfig/httpd: if test -f /db2home/db2inst1/sqllib/db2profile; then . /db2home/db2inst1/sqllib/db2profile fi Under CentOS 7's systemctl system this no longer works. I need a clue as to where to start looking for where to put this so it will be sourced when the Apache server starts. I have googled this and can find nothing relevant. I even did a "find / -name httpd -print" and didn't find anything looking promising. Thanks for your help Harold

External harddisk

I have an old external harddisk, Toshiba 320 Gb, with a USB connector that I wanted to check for contents. It did not start up when connected and I could not hear the motor spinning. After leaving it in the freezer overnight the motor spins but it is not recognized by my computer. I disassembled it and could see that the head assembly rests outside the disk but when it is powered on, the head first moves to the center of the disk, then to the periphery and finally back to the resting position. This happens every few seconds and leaving it connected overnight changed nothing. I installed smartmontools but the disk is not even recognized by my system as a /dev/sd* device and therefore not accessible to smartd (at least as far as I know it.) Any suggestions for what I could try? I am running CentOS 7. Thank you.

UID/GID CentOS 6 to CentOS 7

Hi, we are upgrading some servers from C6 to C7 with a lot of user accounts on them (UID>=500). CentOS 7 has MIN_UID/MIN_GID 1000, Centos 6 has 500 in login.defs. Can I change in /etc/login.defs MIN_UID/MIN_GID to 500 for C7? So I could just grep the users out from passwd/shadow/group files and append them to the Centos7 passwd/shadow/group files. Can this do any damage to CentOS7 later on? Thinking about updates.... Thanks, Thomas

NFS Client to Server User Mapping / how to configure for user-IDs

Hallo, we ve a central Cent7 system working as NFS server. Everything works fine with simple configurations like one client is mapping a share and several clients are mapping a share to edit one or more files wotling as root The problem: fpr a projekt we ve 4 elk-nodes sharing one share on this server to use the same files. This doesn t work. My guess is that the reason is that elk is using an own user. What ist the best way to solve the problem. We have no central user-managemnt for linux-logins. Thanks Ralf

system sounds

Hello, I am using 'Centos 7.8.2003 (Core)' and after an update, a week or two ago, all system sounds seemed to have stopped working. Sound in firefox still works, and also rhythmbox seems to play music files, VLC player do too. It seems that just things like notifications etc are not woring anymore. Also, the "test speakers" in the sound setup doesn't seem to produce any sound. any ideas? thanks, Ron

CentOS 8.2 / missing libc++ (libcxx-devel)

Hi community, In CentOS 7 there is such rpm (libcxx-devel - it seems from EPEL repository), but in CentOS 8 it isn't. I see "MANY" of these ::1 - - [13/Oct/2020:10:46:08 -0500] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Apache/2.4.6 (CentOS) OpenSSL/1.0.2k-fips mod_fcgid/2.3.9 (internal dummy connection)" in the log file. This is not me connecting as ::1 is localhost. What is this - how might I stop it ? Thanks Jerry
