Centos 5.6 Implications of PGP53 ?

If one stays with Centos 5.x (currently on 5.6) is the problem/enhancement/incompatibility involving PHP53 likely to be resolved by general updates and/or the introduction of Centos 5.7 ? Paul.

Centos 5.6 : Apache bug fix = PHP Exec no longer works

A few days ago I upgraded from the Centos 5 CR repository software including Apache. The Apache on my development server is: Apache/2.2.3 Aug 31 2011 20:18:21 httpd.x86_64 0:2.2.3-53.el5.centos.1 A previously working PHP Exec(...) command on a web page no longer works. After spending 7+ hours Googling, checking file and directory permissions, whether SELinux is on or off and doing numerous tests my once very nice routine will not work because the Shell processing by Apache seems to have altered. The consistent error message always includes: No such file or directory or command not found I have downgraded to httpd.x86_64 0:2.2.3-45.el5.centos.1 and restarted httpd but the problem persists. It appears to me, the PHP EXEC command is being executed in a 'black hole' with no access to the directory structure and that is why the weird error message occur. Helpful comments appreciated. we need to filter out various peoples posts on this list would some kind soul(s) please direct us in locating the best email list reading programs w/ the best features to read the centos and other lists. the CentOS list signal/noise ratio is so bad that we need something better than just outlook like clients or whatever appropriate windows and linux recommendations would be most appreciated thank you in advance - rh

Question on CR

I've been re-reading http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2011-August/017689.html I'm not clear as to when an update would go into the normal updates repository and when it'd go into the cr repository. Please don't take this the wrong way; I'm not attacking; I'm just trying to understand how this works. My best guess is that upstream is now 5.7 and bug fixes would be against 5.7, but since we're at 5.6 those fixes don't specifically apply, and so the cr is a temporary holding place for packages (and their dependencies) which would normally be in 5.7 but that need an earlier release (eg security). In this way cr is an attempt to provide timely security patches while the new release is still being prepared and validated. Is that correct? Are cr packages still validated as strictly as every other package? Are there any potential negative consequences of using cr? (Of course that posting - Aug 15th - hoped 5.7 would be out by 25th :-)) Thanks! -- rgds Stephen

centos rpm package description list?

Dear All Is there any reference link that lists the centos rpm packages by their description? As I know, we have reference sites like rpm.pbone.net and dag.wieers.com etc that we can search for an rpm package by its name. But what we have if we want to find a rpm package by its description rather than its name? Say we want to find how many solutions do we have for Image processing or Speech processing on centos, so if we know the solution is GIMP so we can search for its rpm package on the mentioned sites but what we can do if we just know the rpm package description? Thank you

Centos 5.6 : No YUM Updates ?

Always Used to seeing regular GUI notices of updates, I also noticed the absence of any. Applications System Tools Software Updater produces none. Neither does yum update yet there was on this List a recent warning about about an Apache vulnerability. -- With best regards, Paul. England, EU.

CentOS 6.0 and 3ware 9650SE series RAID Performance

Hello, Does anyone have experience using a 3ware 9650SE series raid controller on CentOS 6.0? I am getting very sporadic throughput with moderately sized files (0.5-2GB) on ext3. I have tried most of the mount time tuning options: * noatime * trying different journal types * setting commit=120 - helped a little Even after these optimizations it doesn't seem like the raid array is working as it should. After a few 1GB writes (dd from /dev/zero to the raid) kjournald runs for an hour and later writes are really slow. Not only that, using tw_cli is very slow ... whereas tw_cli is superfast if kjournald is not churning away. So it goes something like this * write one 1GB file (486 MB/s) * writes another (223 MB/s) * any writes before the 120s commit kicks in, is ~200MB/s * commit kicks in and kjournald starts churning * writes are all over the map - 6-85MB/s Maybe this is just the way it is, but it did not seem to be the case this same hardware was running Fedora (Core) 9 and I have a similar machine where this does not seem to be the case (I can't experiment on it at the moment). The one thing I do not know, since I did not create the RAID or ext3 filesystem is whether the stride and stripe-width were properly selected to match the 64k chunk size of the raid array. I don't know how to tell from tune2fs ... output below ... its either not there or by another name. Any help or suggestions are appreciated. how to install packages via yum using dvd as repo?

Dear All On my centos 6.0 , how can I install packages via yum using DVD as repo? Actually, the file size is large and the Internet connection speed is low so do we have a solution for it? I am using as the following but unsuccessful : #yum --enablerepo=c6-media install gimp
