Scp and SFTP speed much difference???

we have CENTOS 5.X on server A and Server B. Both servers have Gigabit network card connect to same switch. I test network speed from Server A to Server B and found speed much difference: SFTP: 42 MB/Sec SCP: 20 MB/sec SCP command: scp -Crp -o CompressionLevel=1 user1@ServerB:/TMP/File1 . Anyone know how to improve SCP speed?

hello , i have to an remote server contact via rescue console. How can i install centos there without any image or cd? with gentoo i untar a stage3 tarball and latest portage , baking kernel - go! (shortversion) but how to do this with centos? i gooled last hour but only find howtos with cd / dvd. the remote server i can only contact via kvm or rescue console. any ideas? marko

Emergency help needed on host network randomly stop working.

Hi, This is a Centos 5.5 host with one xen guest. About 2 weeks ago, the host randomly lost network connection. By this I mean I could not connect to the services on it, or ping it. Also was the status of the guest. From serial console, I connected to the host, trying to see what happened. No clue (any error messages) in messages or dmesg. ifdown/ifup the interface did not help, either. Only rebooting was my only choice. Searching through Google, I got the information that some other guys met similar problem, and resolved by setting stp on with the bridge interface. I set it, too. And the problem still occurs. Mock - Problems building Centos5 package on Centos6 - where can I ask for advice ?

Hi. I am trying to use Mock to rebuild a .src.rpm file I have made for PHP 5.3.8 (for Centos6) I have managed to install deps fine with mock. When I try to rebuild the package though I get. Odd issue with C6 and NIS

I seem to have this very odd issue with CentOS 6 WRT NIS. I have taken the package selection that I used with CentOS 5 and basically plopped it into my C6 kickstart file (see below). On C5 this works just fine and I'm able to log in with NIS credentials just fine. However, it looks like on C6 if you use a package selection like this, you also need to specify the yp-tools package as part of the kickstart *even though* you specify an authentication method of NIS in the kickstart. Deciding when to do system encryption

Hello All, I have read that system encryption slows a computer down. However, I am more interested in when to use it. Consider the following scenarios: 1. You have a server in a secured server room on a rack (is there any need and advantage to having system encryption in this particular case) 2. you have a server sitting in an office that is accessible by everyone 2. You have a desktop 3. You have a laptop So my questions are: What situations/scenarios do you consider before implementing system encryption? CentOS 6 is a bear

Gotta say, centos has been tough to install and get working. The anaconda installer makes large drive setups horridly tedious (especially if reinstalling a lot). Package selection seems a bit off... I did a virtualization package, no custom..did not install qemu, libvirt, and all attempts to do any virtualization failed due to non-installed packages. Then I decided to select all the virtualization packages in custom, but had selected 'web server' as the base package. I was never able to connect to the net here at home...apparently some things with 'modprobe' did not install and the eth devices 'does not exist' or something like that. Then I decided on the entire gnome package, with all the bells and whistles...everything worked, but who wants that? I removed some packages in gnome to see and reboot made machine dead. Did that 4 different times with very few package removals. Did a number of various tries with custom selections, but the dependencies seem to not be grabbing all it needs to work. Never got a non gnome setup to recognize eth devices (well, one time, but it never was able to get the net). I just installed a custom set up, all virtualization packages- virtualization selected as base. I added some gnome stuff and a few other doo dads.....booted up..went right to the command line.... no virt software works, errors everywhere. Display will not come up (x, vnc, or gnome no matter what).. Every installation, in first boot up had major missing or odd problems. One time I booted up with a gnome set up and selinux was stopping 5 differetn gdm programs..at boot...due to security risks... wtf? Any attempt to disable or make selinux permissive results in a dead machine, unable to ever boot again (left one up for 12 hours, never came back up, thought it was relabeling, but no message.) Removing packages with the gnome running only worked about 10% of the time, all others resulted in dead machine at reboot. I am considering, the only way to actually install and use this as a virtualized host is to go full desktop and hope the selinux enforcing will not break the system (with all the programs it will not let run on boot)... I have never, not once, been able to connect to the net in the command line setups...I know how to configure eths, network, dns, etc...not once, not even dhcp..config eth0 up, etc.. Gnome has not a single issue with the same exact file setups.. Many command line setups would not even see the eth devices, something about modprobe this or that not installed.....wth? quite an interesting task. I have now taken the server out of the center and am just going to endlessly install until I get a system that is low resources and actually allows the virtualization to work. My last install, with all virt packages selected...?..... cannot run virt-manager, libvirt, though some virt programs do work...why? something each needed to run was not installed as a dependency....<smacks head> Reinstalling would not be so bad, but the anaconda installer does not quite set up the drives the same on a reinstall forcing a deletion of partitions and redoing the entire setup..quite annoying /rant off

Broadcom NetXtremeII and CentOS 6

Has anyone managed to get CentOS 6 x86_64 running on a server with a Broadcom NetXtremeII BCM5709 network adaptor? If so have you seen any issues with the network freezing? On booting everything works fine then the network will just stop - can't ping anything. If we manually restart the network service it will run again for a few seconds/minutes before hanging again. We have even installed the latest bnx2 drivers (netxtreme2-6.2.23) as supplied by the server manufacturer - problem remains. Any ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Dear All I have installed an announcement application on my centos 6.0 server that calls for putting specific voice announcement files under /usr/local/srf/bin/prompt to be played in response to certain conditions occurred . There are a huge number of files in the announcement directory and it seems that just one of these voice files is corrupt . Can you please let me know how can I trace in real time to see which application is going to use this folder and which of these files will be accessed at the moment ? My goal is to find that corrupted voice file in real time . Thank you

Choosing a CentOS version

This may be a noob question but there is something I have been trying to understand, there are currently three main versions of CentOS 4, 5, and 6. My main question is simply how do I know what version I should deploy? I have searched online and either I did not do a good job of searching or the information I get is inadequate. To better understand why I ask this question, here are some of the build up questions. - Is there an online resource that lists (compare/contrast) the different versions (i.e. 4, 5, and 6) and why you should pick a particular one? - Is a particular version the best for a web server, how do I know this? - Should or does it matter what version I deploy? - Can assume that once a version is decided upon, one should stick to the latest release. i.e. for version 5, go with 5.7 right now? If you can point me to an online resource, that would be awesome as well. B.I.

I finally deleted ifcfg-bro and used the existing ifcfg-eth0 and -eth1 scripts to at least get a network connection working. When I start the network service I only saw l0 and eth0 start as eth1 is disabled. However, when I did an ifconfig I saw that br0 is configured as well, but not by me. Looking for br0 in the file system led me to the directories listed above. I do not recall seeing these before and the only difference between this CentOS box and the previous virtual host I installed is that this time I selected the virtual host install option instead of minimal install. Evidently this was a misstep on my part. One that I doubt I shall repeat. CentOS 6.0 CR mdadm-3.2.2 breaks Intel BIOS RAID

I just upgraded my home KVM server to CentOS 6.0 CR to make use of the latest libvirt and now my RAID array with my VM storage is missing. It seems that the upgrade to mdadm-3.2.2 is the culprit. This is the output from mdadm when scanning that array, # mdadm --detail --scan ARRAY /dev/md0 metadata=imsm UUID=734f79cf:22200a5a:73be2b52:3388006b ARRAY /dev/md126 metadata=imsm UUID=3d135942:f0fad0b0:33255f78:29c3f50a mdadm(IMSM): Unsupported attributes : 40000000 mdadm: IMSM metadata loading not allowed due to attributes incompatibility. mdadm(IMSM): Unsupported attributes : 40000000 mdadm: IMSM metadata loading not allowed due to attributes incompatibility. ARRAY /dev/md127 container=/dev/md0 member=0 UUID=734f79cf:22200a5a:73be2b52:3388006b The error about IMSM shows up on google as something that happened to Fedora users during a FC14->FC15 upgrade. The server itself isn't old, it's a Supermicro 2U with Dual Xeon 5400 family of CPU. There are two RAIDs on this one controller...a RAID1 which still functions and a RAID5 which is the one that is unable to be seen. I don't know what IMSM is for, but the only thing strange about that array is it is 2.7TB so the BIOS configured it as two separate arrays, one as 2TB and one as 700GB, but it was showing up to CentOS as a single volume. I downgraded to 3.2.1 , ran mdadm again and bam...it works, # mdadm --detail --scan ARRAY /dev/md0 metadata=imsm UUID=734f79cf:22200a5a:73be2b52:3388006b ARRAY /dev/md126 metadata=imsm UUID=3d135942:f0fad0b0:33255f78:29c3f50a ARRAY /dev/md127 container=/dev/md0 member=0 UUID=691f975d:6beecfd8:67b39886:b7ee7f6e Hopefully this can be fixed before this version makes it to 6.1, though it's likely a problem for upstream RHEL as well. - Trey

hello list, I'm trying to install ganglia-gmetad on centos 5.6. rrdtool is already installed and librrd is there. But for some reason when I go to install this package it doesn't see that it is. CentOS CVE "database"?

Was working on a project tonight to document CVE fixes applied to servers, and noted that RedHat has completely jacked up their website. In the past, I've usually just used their website for links to their CVE list, as well as links to their Errata to look up specifics for CentOS machines. It sure looks like these links are either permanently gone from the public pages to be hidden internally only available to Subscribers, or... RedHat's Marketing folks have completely destroyed what was once a valuable information-filled website. Either way... the question now becomes... Is there something similar to RedHat's CVE listings by year and number hosted by anyone in the CentOS community or by CentOS itself for CentOS? I haven't had much luck with my GoogleFu tonight. CentOS-6.0 Continuous Release ( CR ) repository

I don't really understand the function of this repository, or rather why the RPMs in it are not in the standard repository? I read the outline at <http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/CR>, and added the repository on two CentOS machines. On yum-updating some 450MB of updates were installed. Installing Ruby gems on RPM-based systems

When I first got involved with Red Hat (back with 5.2 in the early 90's) I learned the hard way not to use language-specific packaging systems like CPAN for Perl because they'd conflict with RPM's database and make it much harder to manage what was installed on my system. If I now need a package for which no RPM is available, I'll use a utility like cpanspec to repackage it into an RPM and install that. Now I'm starting to work with Ruby and apparently it has its own packages called "gems". How do people deal with making Ruby and RPM get along? I'm trying to build Diaspora, an open source alternative to Facebook, and it wants me to install a ton of gems. I'm working on a "disposable" machine that I can re-image at will, so I let it use Ruby's "bundle install" command to dump all the gems from the Ruby repositories into their system location. But in a "real" installation I'd want to do this with RPM, repackaging gems as needed. [C6] Some typical apps missing?

Hi everyone! :-) I just installed CentOS 6 on one of my desktop machines, and yum now tells me that some of my favorite apps are not present in any of the repositories I configured. To name a few: ktorrent, kile, krusader, pavucontrol, mplayerplug-in (or is it now gecko-mediaplayer), xine, xmms, and so on... All these apps were readily available for C5, and I used them happily. I am mostly surprised with the absence of *any* torrent client, bar the rtorrent (which doesn't have a man page and I have no idea how to use it). Also kile, krusader and pavucontrol are quite basic and common apps... The configured repositories are: base, updates, extras, rpmforge, elrepo, as reported by yum. What am I missing? I would also be grateful if anyone has a suggestion for a reasonable (and available) substitute for any of these apps. I usually prefer KDE4 apps, but will use anything that works. I found some (rtorrent, mozilla-vlc, gnome-volume-control), but I am not exactly thrilled with their quality, so I'm hoping someone has a better suggestion. Google didn't want to be my friend this time, all hits were related to C5... ;-) TIA, :-) Marko

BIND and a second server resolving itself

I am installing my second server in the datacenter but having problems getting to the net with it. I am going to use it as a KVMvirt host and do not want to run bind on its base OS. My thought was to just refer to it in the bind zones as an additional record (main.example.com is the working server now, main2.example.com is the new one). I cannot get the new one to reach out to the net, is there something I have to do on the new server to make it resolve correctly (I have listed my nameservers and hosts file and all that)? I think I have to allow my original server, the one hosting the nameservers, to allow the new server access to query, is that right? or do I just need to add the IN A record with the ip, main2.example.com. IN A xxx.x..x...x..? this is the first time I ever went with two servers and a bit confused as to proper resolution on the second server without having bind on it... any help appreciated. happy friday all

Team CentOS, Just writing to thank you a lot for the CentOS 6.1 packages made available on the 26th of September. I haven't gone through what updates exactly you guys released in the cr repository but I am well impressed with the improvements. Great timing as my RHEL self-support contract was due for renewal and I am so pleased with the refreshed packages, it now works on my ThinkPad X220, that I won't renew my RHEL subscription. Migrating CentOS 5 -> 6: where to put /etc/inittab respawn scripts?

Hello, sorry, for 1 more question on CentOS 5 -> CentOS 6 migration. On my old CentOS 5.7 machine I have the following line: pref:3:respawn:/bin/su -c '/usr/local/pref/pref.pl >/tmp/pref-`date +%a`.txt 2>&1' afarber and this has served me well, I don't want to install anything else like daemontools etc. - to keep my web-server easily reinstallable (or movable to another hoster). But now I have migrated to CentOS 6.0, added that line and the "init q", but nothing happens - as indeed promised by the comments in the new /etc/inittab. Where should I move my line, which docs to read? The pref.pl is a poll()ing TCP-sockets daemon for a game Thank you Alex

Once I had the bridge fixed, the crashing stopped and network has been working on the guest. So it was my bad there. I thought that an incorrect network config would only affect networking, but it was causing a kernel panic.

CentOS 6 and Pyzor

Had anybody been successful in getting Pyzor to run on CentOS 6 64bit? I have it running fine on CentOS 6 32 bit, and I 'think' I did identical installs. Permission question

Hello, We own a CentOS Server which hosts a few domains using Cpanel, however each host or domain has its own user and its own folder under /home, we want a separate user(newuser1) to have read and write privileges in all home's subdirectories so we can do some tasks remotely using WinSCP, that user is already in the sudoers group and the root login is disabled in SSH for security, but I haven't been able to assign the correct privileges and rights to newuser1 using chmod -R owneruser:newuser1 /home/owneruserdir, everytime we login with newuser1 using WinSCP to /home and try to change directory to /home/owneruserdir we receive a permission denied message, so I don't know where else to look. Confgure SAN with Linux

Hi, i'm new to this subject. I try to present a san attachment on my Linux server (OEL 5.5). I'm running a HP server with qlogic 2462 and my SAN Storage is a HP EVA. Zoning is good. I installed HP SanSurfer and i see the vdisk with this utility. But, impossible to see the volume from the os. Fdisk returns me to the local disks, and multipath -l command does not return any info. I installed qlogic drivers, edit multipah.conf, install devicee mapper .... Have you any idea or how to ? I hope I was clear, I started with Linux and I can not put all the necessary information. guest vms crash host systems

I built guest vm's one for Windows 7 and one for Windows XP using the virtual machine manager on a just updated to centos 5.7, and they are both crashing the host machine. They run only for a few minutes, but suddenly freeze, crashing the host. There is no networking. No X. No way to drop out of X. The only way out is a hard reboot. I don't see anything in the logs -- messages or libvirt logs -- immediately before the crash. I haven't found anything like this on the web or on this list. The workstation has two xeon E5410s. I noticed that both the kvm-amd and kvm-intel modules are loaded, but don't know if that would cause a problem. I had an ati firepro graphics card in the machine, but suspected that might be the source of some conflict, and I put in an Nvidia card. The vm's were built with all the defaults. The configuration is just about identical to vms I have running on a smaller machine with a dual core Athalon. Thanks for any suggestions.

CentOS 6 USB changes

Ok, I just managed, after much effort, to rebuild my USB key to install CentOS 6. There are a number of changes. Partition the USB key, but make partition 1, Win 95 (FAT32) (I think that's partition type "b"), bigger. I made it 500M. The rest should be ext3 (or whatever). Format the partitions. Make sure to toggle the bootable flag on partition 1. syslinux /dev/<DOS partition> When you're done, the DOS partition should look like this: ls -laF /mnt /boot/ /ldlinux.sys /syslinux/ Under /boot is /grub, and it's contents. Make sure you create a grub.conf to put in there. If syslinux didn't put it there, mount your .iso, and copy /mnt/iso/isolinux into there, then rename /syslinux/isolinus.cfg to /syslinux/syslinux.cfg. I put a grub.conf here, too: cat /mnt/disk/syslinux/grub.conf #debug --graphics default=0 splashimage=@SPLASHPATH@ timeout 5 hiddenmenu title @PRODUCT@ @VERSION@ kernel @KERNELPATH@ initrd @INITRDPATH@ title Install system with basic video driver kernel @KERNELPATH@ xdriver=vesa nomodeset askmethod initrd @INITRDPATH@ title rescue kernel @KERNELPATH@ rescue askmethod initrd @INITRDPATH@ On the second partition, copy your .iso images. Then copy /mnt/iso/images there. You should be good to go. Firefox 7 on CentOS 5

Anyone have any luck running updated Firefox on CentOS 5? We have CentOS 5 workstations and need to update their Firefox but it dumps core even when using the libstdc++ from Fedora 9. I would like anything stable and secure beyond Firefox 3 but can't find tarballs for anything other than 7.0.1. CentOS 5.5 i386 w/ updates firefox-7.0.1.tar.bz2 libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386.rpm from Fedora 9 Thanks, -- Wade Hampton

Problems with Intel Ethernet and module e1000e

Hi all, I'm facing a serious problem with the e100e kernel module for Intel 82574L gigabit nics on Centos 6. The device eth0 suddenly stops working i.e. no more networking. Expunge Old Email

For those of you running mailservers on CentOS 6, what are the suggestions for programs to expunge old email? For instance, deleting email from a Spam folder that is 2 weeks old or older. I see that Dovecot does have a solution, but was wondering about what others have landed on. My systems are basically Postfix, Dovecot using Maildir. Thanks, John Hinton

CentOS 6: Increase shared memory limits permanently

Hello again, on CentOS 6 / 64 bit what is please the best way to permanently increase the shared memory? I'd like to give shared_buffers = 4096MB to PostgreSQL 8.4 on my machine with 16 GB RAM, but I currently only have: # sysctl -A|grep shm kernel.shmmax = 33554432 kernel.shmall = 2097152 kernel.shmmni = 4096 and this produces the error in /var/lib/pgsql/pgstartup.log: FATAL: could not create shared memory segment: Invalid argument DETAIL: Failed system call was shmget(key=5432001, size=4399202304, 03600). HINT: This error usually means that PostgreSQL's request for a shared memory segment exceeded your kernel's SHMMAX parameter. You can either reduce the request size or reconfigure the kernel with larger SHMMAX. To reduce the request size (currently 4399202304 bytes), reduce PostgreSQL's shared_buffers parameter (currently 524288) and/or its max_connections parameter (currently 103). If the request size is already small, it's possible that it is less than your kernel's SHMMIN parameter, in which case raising the request size or reconfiguring SHMMIN is called for. The PostgreSQL documentation contains more information about shared memory configuration. And I wonder if I should set shmmax or shmall and also if these 2 limits are total for all machine processes or per process? (i.e. should I allow a bit more for processes besides PostgreSQL)? CentOS 6: hostname and timezone

Hello, I've purchased a new dedicated CentOS 6.0 / 64 bit server and have 2 minor problems please: 1) The "hostname" is reported as CentOS-60-64-minimal at CLI - eventhough I've edited /etc/hosts and changed the 2nd line: 127.0.0.1 localhost 176.9.123.123 preferans 2) Why is /etc/localtime a regular file? Should I maybe rm /etc/localtime ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Berlin /etc/localtime Why isn't it done by the CentOS 6.0 install? Thank you Alex

Backup and restore for CentOS 5.5

Hi - I have a NFS/NIS server environment running CentOS 5.5 on a Dell Optiplex 240. I would like to back it up and then move it to a new machine. Couple of questions: 1. This is an older computer Dell Optiplex 240 that I am unable to connect a USB drive to. In the "linux rescue" environment fdisk -l shows only /dev/hda but lsusb shows the three partitions that are on the drive. I would like to know how to connect the USB drive to the system so I can rsync or dd to the drive. 2. I was going to rsync a backup, excluding /proc, /sys, /dev and /tmp, either to a mounted USB drive or to a remote station. I know how to do that but how do I setup the drive up for the restore on the new computer. I have google'd but without success. I would think I need to format the hard drive, then run the LVM tools (<-very ignorant here), and install grub after all the files are in place (maybe mkinitrd too). Is there information avaiable to do this or would some be willing to provide what I would need to accomplish this. Thanks, -- Denis Becker

creating C6 xen VM and virt-install

List, Now that Centos 6 is here, virt-install fails to launch an install for a C6 xen domU. The virt-install script is part of libvirt and is in package: python-virtinst.noarch the script, OSDistro.py, has a path hard-coded for a rhelX or centos VM install. IOW, ./images/xen is appended to the provided mirror URL to get the kernel/initrd.img pair needed for a netboot. Centos 6 repos don't have this subfolder in the images branch, but they have ./images/isolinux. Is there a reason that ./images/xen subfolder can't be created and populated with the boot pair from the ISOLINUX subfolder? I believe another RH clone project does this with good results. Help keep virt-install working with C6 and fix this, please. -- Mark

Another request / idea was to have this CMS under development write user controls to .htaccess files to restrict download access to directories. Typically if I even allow any overrides, I set it so apache can only read .htaccess. My understanding of the more obvious implications is that if the web server can write to .htaccess so can any attacker, and then can easily inject malware or redirect the site to malicious content. Is there ever a case where it's safe to allow write access by apache to .htaccess? Does the below config for .htaccess in httpd.conf protect from this at all if write permissions were given on the file system? <Files ~ "^\.htaccess"> Order allow,deny Deny from all Satisfy All </Files> Personally I think that the CMS should handle authorization, and at then possibly rely on Apache for authentication. Hi all, Due to some reason, I will have to stop using Samba as our fileserver, and instead replace it with SSH access only. Users will be able to use WinSCP for it. The question is, is there any tool to track files (what is new files, deleted files by who, etc)? In Samba I can do that. I don't know how if it's SSH access. Thank you Fajar.

Openvz inside a KVM guest?

Open vz is a container VM....software, not hardware dependent. Is is possible to make a server a centos 6 KVM host, install centos 6 as a guest system... and then install openvz (or something like that) in the guest OS? thus instead of two websites each with its own guest image, you can put both inside the guest and still have them kind of sandboxed? or is that crazy?

add on sata card relabeling drives, installation

Hi all. I have a new server and am playing with the installation. (centos 6). My onboard sata card has 6 drives attached to it, yet the server has 8 bays. I bought a sata controller card (adaptec) and added it to the mix, adding two more drives. Everything works and all is accessible, but there is one annoying issue. When installing with anaconda, the 2 drives located on the add-on sata card are being listed as sda and sdb instead of going to the back of the line. I would rather my a and b drives be the 0 and 1 sata ports of the onboard controller, but it seems the add-on is taking priority. My only thought is to install without the 2 drives connected and then add them afterwords. But again, that makes no sense to have to do it that way. Is this just normal for the add on sata cards? If I add the drives to the system after I install it all, will linux barf on it and change the drive letters? I do not want my raid 1 mirror OS to be on sdc, sdd, and sde....it just looks weird. thanks

CentOS 6 and NIS not working

I am having no luck getting NIS to work on a clean install of CentOS 6. It seems to be an issue with ypbind. I have simple /etc/yp.conf which explicitly sets the server domain myDomain server myServer The service seems to start okay #service ypbind start Starting NIS service: [OK] Binding NIS service: … [OK] But when I try to use any of the yp services, like ypwhich #ypwhich ypwhich: Can't communicate with ypbind This is usually blamed on ypbind not running, but ypbind is confirmed to be running #ps -ef | grep ypbind root 3033 1 0 15:11 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/ypbind ypcat also does not work #ypcat netgroup No such map net group. Reason: Can't bind to the server which serves this domain I have double checked that the server is running #rpcinfo -u myServer ypserv program 100004 version 1 ready and waiting program 100004 version 2 ready and waiting The domain name seems to be set correctly as well #domainname myDomain I have tried disabling iptables and selinux, but that has no effect. I am probably missing something obvious, but NIS has never given me these issues before. Any suggestions on what might be the culprit? Martyn

I had a recent request to improve security on my web servers by having each website use a different user to run the hosting service. So example1.comhas it's own Apache instance running as apache1 and then example2.com has its own instance of Apache as apache2. Is this even possible or realistic? I understand the idea of how that would be secure, much like creating a virtual machine to segregate services. The only way I can think how this is done is to chroot each website. What makes this request even stranger is that each website will be managed by the same CMS and code base. So with that being the case, I don't see how this is possible. ssh -D socks proxy through CentOS-5

Is there anything special in the way of configuration that is required to enable a CentOS box to act as the point of origin for an http request routed to it via a SOCKS ssh link? I have researched this matter and the recommended procedure is to open an SSH connection to the desired host passing the requisite switches so: ssh -f -n -D <port> user(a)host.domain.tld And then reconfigure the desired applications to use the localhost:<port> as the SOCKS proxy. However, I cannot seem to get this to work with my CentOS based desktop to which I am trying to connect through a public wireless network. I connect to the desktop via terminal (on OSX-10.6.8 fine), but setting the browser, Firefox-3.6.23, advanced network config to use localhost:<port> as a SOCKSv5 proxy for http simply results in the browser failing to show anything. I do not get any error, I just get a blank page for whatever url I try. I have tried this with and without the iptables service running on the target and achieved the same results. Therefore I do not consider the firewall configuration on the target to be the immediate problem. Has anyone here tried to do this and succeeded? Firefox 7 vs latest Flash plugin vs CNN

I'm seeing a strange issue on my C-5.7 system. running Firefox 7 with the very latest flash plugin. browse to CNN, I can view any of the videos directly linked on the main page, or directly linked on sub-pages. but if I click on the video link at the top of the page (in the red bar) Firefox displays the page as a list of "thumbnails" for each video with a small viewer in the upper left corner, then hangs. the browser is completely unresponsive at this point. if I wait a minute (or two, or three) eventually a message appears in the area where the video should be showing saying: "The flash plugin has crashed." and a link to send a crash report. So, I cannot play any of the videos on the "video" page. however, I CAN play THE VERY SAME VIDEOS if I find a link to the video from another page on cnn. clearly there's something about the "video" page that confuses the heck out of the "poor" flash plugin. I haven't see anyone pos about this, so maybe I'm the only one having this problem... And it all works fine on my eeepc running Centos-6 with Firefox 7 and the same flash version. passwd problem with new vps

greetings, I am setting up Centos 6 i686 remotely, on a new VPS. A problem I have is that I cannot set password for new users. I have created one with useradd -m new_user but when I type passwd new_user this is the result: [root@vps ~]# passwd new_user Changing password for user new_user New password: Retype new password: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error [root@vps ~]# tail /var/log/secure Sep 27 17:30:30 vps passwd: pam_cracklib(passwd:chauthtok): pam_get_authtok_verify returned error: Failed preliminary check by password service but I have no clue what the check I've failed is, or if it's a console problem (locales, weird control characters) or maybe a selinux thing? For the record, if I enter a weak password on purpose, e.g. "amok", everything works, meaning that I get an explanation like "password refused because it's too short", or something like that. But when I try longer passwords, with or without non alphanumeric characters, I get this error. what else should I check, or fix? TIA, Marco

Hello all, I am going to post videos on a youtube channel showing the steps I am taking in putting together a new server. I am by no means an expert and it is intended for people who just want to get a gist of what it entails. channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/WebserverVideos The first part is done, getting the server and putting it together. Along with my thoughts on the build. Future parts coming in the next few weeks will include comprehensive steps dealing with ipmi, raid 1 arrays, centos 6 as a host, centos 6 as guests...dns servers, webserver guest (mail, apache, etc). Selinux.. and the whole shebang. I will be doing a video of the installation at the datacenter which should be cool for those who have never been in one to do it. Comments open, but moderated. This is just a personal webserver project and will cover the steps I take (and why) in building it. I will be adding a 3550 cisco (as soon as I figure it all out) as a switch for my two servers with a full step by step of updating and configuring it. Feel free to tell me if you see anything completely wrong...or something I might forget. I'll do my best to make it time effective to watch it and learn.

data recovery

Hi, Need help on data recovery. Suddenly my disk device's geometry has been changed to something that doesnot make any sense. Its a 1.8TB in size and had only one single partition. Now I can see 3 partitions sde1, sde2 and sde2 of sizes 130M, 140GB and 10GB. Is there any way to recover data from these newly created disk devices? Thanks Paras.

is there a way to make the kernel see a new ethernet device without rebooting?

I have a VMWare ESX server with virtual machines running CentOS. I want to add an ethernet interface to one of the CentOS virtual machines. VMWare allowed me to add a virtual NIC to the CentOS virtual machine while it was running. However, the CentOS o.s. cannot see the new NIC. Is there a command I can run to make the kernel aware of the new ethernet device? I don't want to reboot the CentOS o.s. if I don't have to Thanks, JD

CentOS 6: corosync and pacemaker won't stop (patch)

Hi, I cannot 'halt' my CentOS 6 servers while running corosync+pacemaker. I believe the runlevels used to stop corosync and pacemaker are not in the correct order and create the infinite "Waiting for corosync services to unload..." loop thing. This is my first time with this cluster technology but apparently pacemaker has to be stopped /before/ corosync. Finding i/o bottleneck

Hi list ! We have a very busy webserver hosted in a clustered environment where the document root and data is on a GFS2 partition off a fiber-attached disk array. Now on busy moments, I can see in htop, nmon that there is a fair percentage of cpu that is waiting for I/O. In nmon, I can spot that the most busy block device correspond to our gfs2 partition where many times, it shows that it's 100% busy and is read all along. Now, I want to know what files are being waited for. With lsof I can get a listing of open files, but it doesn't gives me if a file is just opended in ram or if it's being waited for... What tools besides lsof, nmon, htop, atop can help me find that info ? I am under RHEL/CentOS 6.1. Thanks

Slow DNS lookups on CentOS6

Most of my desktops are still running CentOS5, but I have installed CentOS6 on a few of them. The users on those desktops are reporting that DNS lookups are slow, and from my brief tests, that does appear to be the case. After some googling, I found a suggestion to disable IPv6, but that didn't help. So I tried to figure out where the delay occurs using strace and ltrace, but that didn't help much. How do I get the centos 6 console screen out of high-res mode? I tried a couple things of adding to the grub.conf file vga=ask and vga=769. Neither had any effect. I did not get prompted to ask for what mode or anything.... Whats the correct way to have centos 6 drop into normal old vga text mode and not high res small character hard to read mode. kickstart: gfx vs. txt mode

Hello, I seem to recall from my redhat5/6/7 days that certain installation methods used for kickstarting only invoked text mode install. Now I read that graphical install is default in kickstart on el5/6. However, in my test environment (with older HP DL140G3) I only get text mode install up, even if I specify graphical in kickstart file, with both nfs and http install methods. [OT] Fetchmail and Mutt help

Hi All, I setup Fetchmail and wanted to use Mutt to read e-mail. I used to use Pine and I just am sick of GUI e-mail clients these days. Bloat, complication and unreliable. Pine was my first ever e-mail client. I prefer to use POP still as I want may mail on my machine at all times. I can go into mutt and execute: 'fetchmail -v' and watch it bring down my e-mail. But in mutt i dont see anything. I dont see an inbox. no messages. nada. I set my mail to /Users/jtsm/.mail and if I go to that location I dont see anything there. Can anyone help me get setup? Also, can anyone point me how to make mutt look like this: http://linsec.ca/File:Muttscreen.jpg interms of the columns? IIRC there use to be a patch but that was so long ago I dont know if it even applies anymore. I am reading the Wiki, but who knew Mutt was so extensive... -Todd

CentOS-6 by PXEboot?

Has anyone succeeded in installing CentOS-6.0 by PXEboot. If so, would you say how you did it, please. I tried (on an HP MicroServer), but gave up in the end and used a USB stick installation instead. But I'd be very interested to know how to do it, for the future. I ran yum update on a CentOS 6.0 machine against the CR repository and noticed that the nfs-utils-lib update broke my rcp.idmap settings: rpc.idmapd: libnfsidmap: processing 'Method' list rpc.idmapd: libnfsidmap: Unable to get init function: /usr/lib64/libnfsidmap/umich_ldap.so: undefined symbol: libnfsidmap_plugin_init rpc.idmapd: libnfsidmap: requested translation method, 'umich_ldap', is not available rpc.idmapd: Unable to create name to user id mappings. The /usr/lib64/libnfsidmap/umich_ldap.so library included with the 1.1.5-3.el6 update is noticably smaller than the one included in the standard 6.0 package, v. 1.1.5-1.el6. The rpm checks out correctly via gpg and an rpm2cpio->cpio pipe. Running ldd against the updated library shows the expected links. But the library appears to not work. RTL8111/8168B always 100mbps

Dear All, I have an onboard Realtek RTL8111/8168B NIC. from lspci -vv : 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 02) It is detected, but why the speed is always 100Mbps, already change cable but still no luck. I use ethtool and from the output it seems that system know that this NIC support gigabit speed : Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Full have change the driver r8169 with r8168 and follow the guide on CentOS wiki http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/HardwareList/RealTekRTL8111b but still it only get 100Mbps speed. I user kernel 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5 and 2.6.18-274.3.1.el5-PAE. on another machine with the same specs I use kernel 2.6.18-238.9.1.el5 and the gigabit speed works. Any idea why this happened and how to solve it? Thank you. Hard I/O lockup with EL6

I'm trying to figure out why 2 machines have a "hard I/O lock" on the HDD when running EL6. I have 4 identical machines, all were stable with EL5. 2 work great with EL6, 2 do not. I've checked momtherboard BIOS versions and settings, SAS controller BIOS versions and settings, they are the same between the working and non- working systems. When booting a non-working system, it boots straight up to the boot prompt (runlevel 3) without issue, and everything works fine. When the machine sits idle for a period of time (ranging from 15 minutes or so and up) the HDD becomes unreadable/unwritable and the system is useless for any purpose and must be hard restarted with a full power cycle - it won't even shut down. Since nothing is logged, I've had precious little information to diagnose with. Hacking Issue

Hi, I am having an issue with someone accessing our server via a SIP/VOIP connection. I have changed my iptables rules to drop all UDP traffic from and too this IP address, but this traffic seems to still run through my server. Hello, I need to do some analog video capture and I was wondering what is the status of this in CentOS 6. The last information I could find was here (obviously for CentOS 5): http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2009-September/082521.html Could anybody recommend a not-too-expensive video capture cards (PCI, USB, fireWire, ...) which would be well supported (drivers easily available in base, ElRepo, or not too complicated to build). Perl module installed via CPAN but its is not found

Hello, I am trying to rebuild a zoneminder rpm. It calls for the module perl(Sys::Mmap). I installed via CPAN but when I run rpmbuild --rebuild zoneminder-xxxxxx, it tells me the above module is needed. Seems I ran into this once before and fixed it, but I can't remember what I did. I have searched for two days now and can't find anything of help. TIA Eddie PS If I can get this zoneminder rpm to rebuild, I will post the location for d/l. It is zoneminder 1.24.4

Sort logfiles on common lines?

I have a huge mysql.log file full of errors. I'd like to sort it by the most common line, and work from there. I did go through the manpage for sort, and googled a bit, but I found nothing relevant.
