Files being modified in /bin/

For the binary experts. I have a situation here. Something hideously but continuously is modifying the /bin/ executables as common as coreutils and net-tools. I can verify that from md5sum. First thing I checked was 'ls' and it has a checksum mismatch. So I removed it and reinstalled it. Then I moved the file somewhere else to cross bisect it. I did a hexdump on original ls file and the modified file, and there was some 700 lines of hex code additional in the modified file. Then I set a cron to check and do md5sum on all system files and after half an hour, I go a report back. Files modified. This time when checked the hex dump of newly and earlier modified files, they were the same. Exact same! Because rpm and rpmverify also seemed to have been modified so I cannot trust 'rpm -V' package verification. Already did lsof and process tracing but to no avail. Does anyone have any idea how to find that culprit? -Micky.

Firewalling outbound connections...

Hi, would anyone know a soft to firewall outbound connections (applications phoning home, etc...). It would detect an unknown (to him) app that tries to connect to the outside world and it would popup a allow/deny request...AppArmor might be a bit overkill... Anyone have any experience with Systrace, TuxGuardian or Zorp GPL...? Thx, JD

External Dial-up Modem

I am having an issue with Centos 6 and an external USRobotics modem. We use the modem as part of a last resort SMS paging system. Across multiple Dell servers, different models, I can't not get the modem to respond to simple AT commands while using Minicom. At the same time if I connect the server to a console port on a switch I can successfully access the switches serial console. So I know the serial port itself is working. The modem still works fine if connected to a Centos 5 server. Any thoughts? Just got my Lenovo TS130 with a Xeon E3-1225 Processor, 4GB RAM, blah, blah, blah...... It won't boot CentOS 6.0 64 bit, Scientific Linux 64 bit 6.1, but will boot 32 bit CentOS 6.0. Any ideas? Otherwise, its going back to Amazon Monday and I'm done. Will keep my 5.7 Centos boxes until they rot! TIA

Not receiving root mail

Although I have the alias defined in /etc/aliases and /etc/postfix/aliases, I'm not receiving root mail. Following the previous thread about unreceived logwatch mail, I tested with a manual run of logwatch, and found that my ISP is rejecting the mail because it is seeing an envelope carrying my local address. My suspicion is that the mail is going out via sendmail instead of postfix-sendmail. IIRC there used to be system-switch-mail or a similarly named package. I can't find any such package - and can't remember which file it edited. Can someone please point me to that file? Anne -- New to KDE Software? - get help from http://userbase.kde.org

SSH in and my terminal keystrokes are weird.......

Hi All, I upgraded to OS X 10.7 on my laptop and when I try to ssh into my servers and do edits it seems my backspace is now weird. When I backspace it skips all around, inserts what looks to be special characters, etc. If I save and go back in the file edited right, but due to all the inserted garbage and skipping around of the cursor I cant tell at that time if what I did worked. I dont recall this happening on Snow Leopard at all, but we did also upgrade to CentOS 6 and I honestly have no idea where this issue would be. Can anyone provide any thoughts? Todd

Greetings: I'm planning to set up a test Centos 6.0 box (has CDROM, but no DVD) with these partions: / 10GB ( no separate mount for /usr ) /tmp 1GB /var 10GB /boot 500MB The centos mirrors I have seen do not provide the full distro on CD (this box has no DVD). I'm used to having about 6 CD isos to work with. The livecd install to hard drive works, but apparently does not support custom partitioning (correct me if I'm wrong). What do you suggest I do to get the partitioning I want? I'm leaning towards: booting into single user mode, back up /var to tar file, delete /var, create a new partion for /var and /tmp, update /etc/fstab, mount /var and /tmp, restore /var from tar backup. Is the best way? I have no investment in the current install, so I can start from scratch. -- thanks/regards, Tom

ssh reverse DNS failure

I use dyndns's (free) service to access a remote machine with a dynamic IP address. The machine is running under CentOS-6.0. I can ssh into the address given me by dyndns (*.homelinux.com), but when I do this I get the warning "reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for" * "failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT!" This doesn't really matter, as I normally use OpenVPN for accessing this site - the dyndns method is a safety precaution in case openvpn doesn't work. But I'm wondering if it is possible to stop the warning? Ekiga - camera

dear All, when first installing CentOs some 6 months ago, I noticed this strange thing called Ekiga. Now, some guys at work use Skype and I heard that's owned by Microsoft. So enter James. I bought a webcam, actualy 2, to test Ekiga. Logitech Webcam c210. On a Centos-5.7 system, this printer works fine using a parallel cable but fails using the USB interface; the following appears on the CUPS page when I try to print a page: Unable to open device "hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_6bc_268_AK11044671_if0_printer_no serial": Permission denied" Any suggestions? On a Fedora 14 system, the USB interface works, so it's not the printer. I've also tried another USB jack. Bob T.

Broadcom Wifi Problem

I have a Broadcom 802.11b/g hardware on my dual-boot laptop. Note first that in the WinXP partition, the wifi makes DHCP connections to my router with no problem. Since this was not working in my new CentOS 6 partition, and remembering that there was a driver problem with the old Fedora partition it replaced, I followed instructions founs at: http://repecka.net/en/2011/04/19/install-broadcom-bcm4311-802-11bg-wlan- drivers-on-centos/ and http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt modifying for that fact that I use wlan0 rather than eth1. The wifi is now dead-in-the-water. The wlan light now remains red, and neither ifconfig nor iwconfig show any sign of wlan0 (contra to the situation before I installed the new driver). It still works in the WinXP partition. Suggestions for my next step in fixing this would be most welcome. Thank, Mike.

Broadcom Failure: Chg CentOS 6.0 to 5.7

After following various advice I received on other threads to get the Broadcom wlan0 on my laptop to work I have still not succeeded. Therefore I am changing from CentOS 6.0 to 5.7 . I think that I'll first try the fix at: http://elrepo.org/tiki/wl-kmod on 5.7 . Anyone have a reason why I should proceed differently? Thanks, Mike.

This is probably "overkill", but_it_just_works :-) Adobe Reader is only a "reader" as I assumed it would be. Some PDF readers can also fill in forms, do editing, etc., however not Adobe Reader. Another solution is to use a free online service, such as http://www.pdfescape.com/ and upload the file, fill in the form and/or edit the file, and then download it again. Building custom installation media

Hi, I'm looking for "the best" way to do a custom installation from CD/DVD media. My company sells hardware appliances with our software pre-loaded. Doing so requires that we ship an ISO installation media to the hardware manufacturer who installs it onto the boxes, then ships them out. We're currently using a solution that will no longer work for us going forward, and we would like to switch to a CentOS based OS with some of our software installed on top, with various configuration changes. What's the best way to do this? I've looked at Kickstart, and it looks pretty good -- probably will work perfectly for us assuming my initial glance-through is correct. Is there another method I should consider? If not -- using Kickstart, how do I add some custom software? Should I create RPMs and add them to the CentOS installation tree? I want everything to be on the media, not downloaded from a yum repository. Thanks! -d

PostgreSQL database design tool

Been thinking about playing with PostgreSQL. When I did my research, on the PostgreSQL site, there were a few tools they "recommended" for design, display of schemas, etc. Open System Architect seemed to fit my demands, but unfortunately, the installation documents do not exist, at least the links go in a circle to nowhere. There's a binary which I assume can be executed, but at least one of the libraries are versioned wrong, and I don't want to play with symlinks just to make this work. Has anyone installed a tool for PostgreSQL that will display logical and physical data maps of a database such as what OSA is supposed to do? Can someone recommend something they feel is worthwhile, regardless of it's purpose, when running PostgreSQL? I'm running 64 bit Centos 5.7 and PostgreSQL 8.1. Hello, Let's say your operating policy is "no patch updates without testing first in the test environment". Let's say it takes you 3 weeks to test. Over the course of the 3 weeks, the repo changes (new packages added, old removed). Is there a way to "freeze" a set of packages so that when I run "yum update" on a Prod server it'll get the same package and patch set as the Test server did 3 weeks ago? It's been suggested to maintain a local mirror, and take rsync snapshots of it daily, so then you can point the end node to a particular repository. What other solutions are there? Best, -at

Centos 6 First Install, gripes - cool things- tips/help

Finally got a new server the other day. You know I had to try out centos 6 with this one. dual quad cores, 24 gb ram (12 for each cpu) 6 working drives bays. My first big surprise was the partition system with anaconda. It is a lot different than the centos 5.x version. I am sure it is a bug that it has options for hot spares but does not allow it to be ungreyed out. I think in the end I will have to manually go into command line and take the third drive of the mirror and turn it into a hot spare. Second issue, which quite shocked me, was the loss of the ability to clone a drive during the install. In 5.x I would make all the raid partitions, LVM/groups, boots, etc. on one drive, then simply hit 'clone' to make the second (and third spare) in the array. This time I had to manually do each and every drive, exactly as the other, partition by partition. Not fun if you are reinstalling a lot to test configs and to get it right. Virtual Machines sound cool and this will be my first attempt. That nasty selinux 'silently' is keeping me from putting the images on the second raid 1 array I have...sigh. Initial install of virt machine stuff popped me right into the command line, even though red hat specifically says the graphic stuff has more options. Second install used all the graphic desktop stuff to make sure I had the option (first time ever saw linux desktop, sweet). Interesting that the initial settings of my host had absolutely no network access at all. I had to manually change the network scripts to enable them...each time I reinstalled to play around. (host needs access for ssh and such). Surprised to find a large (75%?) of packages relating to virtual machines not selected in the packages during install...odd. Some might be dependencies, but some obviously were not installed the first few times until I caught that. qemu not selected during install of virt machine....? Still working on getting the raids to work right (first time adding a second 'non system' raid 1) with the whole 'no hot spare' and 3 drives as one. Sure is hard to tell it all apart in the graphic desktop since all the drives are named exactly the same. Learned to never touch the lvm manager graphically, it just seems to not understand the raid setups and wants to reinitialize or destroy everything. I'll stick to command line for that. Best part...using an ipmi card with kvm so I can sit on my windows and do pics/vids of the process for a nice detailed website how to...all the way from bios to deploy...kvm, web, guests, etc...should be fun...should be. Luckily for me, Kernel based virtual machine guys decided to use the abbreviation KVM instead of KbVM. There are about 10 billion pages on kvm switches and tons of other junk, as well as books. Kbvm? Not so much. If I could read Danish (or dutch or german?) I could buy the single book in existence to help with KbVM. Sigh. Should be an experience. I will be posting a lot of stuff on a private forum (well, open to public, but no registrations) about what worked for a stand alone server, hosting multiple websites in a KVM environment... Will even try to use SElinux all the way also. If you want access to post things in that forum, send me an email and I will gladly add you. Starting maybe ~ 12 hours ago, the proverbial floodgates were thrown open on emails sent to the CentOS-announce mailing list for CentOS 5.x, all on account of individual package releases. RedHat have not done the same. What's up? Are these mistakenly released re-announcements of (previously released) package updates? Or, did the mailman server have a burp or hiccup? Or, have the CentOS dev team been waiting for high tide before opening the flood gates? If so, why?, and how about sending the mother-load of announcements as 1 email instead of 1/package, which would: a) match the reality of the updates being released as a batch, and b) keep my inbox from being flooded. Yes, i could switch my mailman subscription to 'digest' mode, and probably will. Still, I'm wondering why they were batch-released? Regards, Jon

Centos6: how to debug suspend?

I have a desktop installation with Centos 6. A lot works fine, but suspend to ram or disk does not work from the KDE menu. If I choose suspend to RAM, the screen goes dark (black-light on) but nothing further happens. I can give my password to remove the screenlock and continue. But the machine stays on. Obviously the suspend has failed. If I use pm-suspend (as root) all works fine. I've looked in /var/log/messages but there is no hint there. The question is thus, how can I debug this? Could it be a permission issue? Do I need to add myself to a specific group? Thanks, Theo

Hi, I noticed the man update for my CentOS-5 kept popping up a couple of times, so instead of using yum-updatesd from the desktop I tried doing a yum update by hand. The update fails, even after removing the package from the cache: Error unpacking rpm package man-1.6d-2.el5.i386 error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/locale/bg/man: cpio: rename Failed: man.i386 0:1.6d-2.el5 Is this a metadata issue with my cache or is that update bad? Safely Remove Disk on LVM

Dear All, I plan to replace an error disk that is part of an LV. from LVM how-to it could be done with using pvmove to move all PE from old disk to new disk.But the howto also said that pvmove is slow. Anyone has experience using pvmove on 2TB disk? Is it possible to make all PE on the old disk empty so I don't have to do pvmove (assuming that I can make a free space >= 2TB). Hi, after updating one of my systems to 5.7 FTP connections stopped working. After a bit of debugging I found out that the ip_nat_ftp module apparently breaks things in 5.7. Installation of 6.0

Some observations. When I installed 6.0 (base install), the installation interface did not guide me through a network configuration. I do static IP addresses, not DHCP. I ended up manually configuring the various /etc/sysconfig files. I forgot to do the GATEWAY configuration and it took me awhile to figure out why I wasn't able to connect to the server from outside the LAN. I also forgot to do the DNS settings. It's deja-vu all over again, going back to the older Red Hat Linux distros. Anyway, I wasn't able to find a configuration program like "netconfig" to help me out. Seems like a pretty big omission. Any thoughts? Am I missing something? === Al

selinux policy remnant according to /bin/ls on CentOS 6.0 box

I installed CentOS 6.0 on 2 different x86_64 boxen. Both originally had selinux installed and enabled. I never touched selinux other than to remove as much of it as I could via rpm -e. As far as I can tell, here are the remaining packages that have something to do with it: # rpm -qa | grep -iE 'sel|pol' checkpolicy-2.0.22-1.el6.x86_64 libselinux-2.0.94-2.el6.x86_64 libsepol-2.0.41-3.el6.x86_64 polkit-0.96-2.el6_0.1.x86_64 # Both boxen have those packages. However: 1) box1 still has files in /selinux whereas box2's /selinux is empty; 2) ls -l on box1 shows a '.' at the end of file/directory, which means a SELinux security context applies, according to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_11_FAQ#Why_does_ls_show_a_dot_.28..29… Any idea why box1 still seems to have an selinux policy applied, and how to un-apply it? mdadm and drive identification?

I have a server that has 16 drives in it. They are connected to a 3ware 9650SE-16ML SATA RAID card. I have the card set to export all the drives as JBOD because I prefer Linux to do the reporting of drive and RAID health . I'm using mdadm to create a RAID6 with a hot spare. Doing this I can take the disks and put them on a completely different SATA controller/computer and still have the RAID intact. My problem is that I have no "for sure" way of matching a drive assigned to one of the /dev/sd[a-z]. Normally I could use a number of methods to match up what /dev/sd[a-z] is to a drives serial number. smartctl, hdparm, udevinfo, /dev/disk/by-uuid, or /dev/disk/by-id. However, the 3ware card obfuscates the drives from the OS and those methods don't work. The only way I know how to get a drives serial number is via the smartctl command like "smartctl -d 3ware,[0-15] -i /dev/twa0", but that does not tell me which sd[a-z] the drive is assigned to. Here is what I have tried. Creating a single large partition with fdisk on each drive as linux autoraid to get a uuid. for some reason the OS assigns the same uuid and only one uuid to the last drive I partition from the 3ware card. Basically all drives on the 3ware card have the same uuid.. Using the /dev/disk/by-id/. For some reason the 3ware card does not always assign the same id to a drive after a reboot. Is there another easy way I can positively ID a drive by serial number and the /dev/sd[a-z] that mdadm sees? Thanks. David.

eth enumeration order

I have installed Centos 6 on a server with two NICs. It so happens that the NIC with the lower ARP adr is assigned 'eth1' and the NIC with the higher ARP 'eth0'. (Not sure if this a bug but it is at least inconvenient) I have modified the udev rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules by swapping eth0 with eth1 in the NIC's rules. However: the file gets changed on reboot. A third rule is automaticaly added for some reason, for one of the NICs which already has a rule. See below. The system ends up with no network interface set up at all, because the init-script gets confused. So.... How do you specifiy the order in which NICs are enumerated? or at least how to tell centos to stop messing with the 70-persistent-net.rules? PDF Reader/Editor for CentOS 5.7 (32 bit)?

I had, in the past, a .pdf reader that also permitted me to fill in some information, when I received a .pdf file. I have KPDF installed, but that seems to only have Reader capability. Trying to install xpdf, with yum, I get this dependency error from rpmforge: 1:xpdf-3.02-8.el5.rf.i386 from rpmforge has depsolving problems --> Missing Dependency: libXm.so.4 is needed by package 1:xpdf-3.02-8.el5.rf.i386 (rpmforge) Error: Missing Dependency: libXm.so.4 is needed by package 1:xpdf-3.02-8.el5.rf. Then, if I try to yum install libXm.so.4 I get this error: No package libXm.so.4 available. Received a contract via email and I would like to add some information and send it back via email. If someone can recommend a Package that I can install, that will be appreciated. Hopefully, something as easy to use as what I had before. Hi I am trying to use oprofile with centos 6.0. LVM lvresize/lvextend requires some space in /etc to grow a logical volume?

Side note: In CentOS-6, I noticed a new option in lvresize / lvextend: -r, --resizefs Resize underlying filesystem together with the logical volume using fsadm(8). Nice. Two steps (lvresize and resize2fs) can now be combined into one! Works great. But that has nothing to do with my question, just thought I'd share the discovery. == Anyway, here's the real issue with LVM, at least in CentOS-6: [root@jttest ~]# df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vg_main-lv_root 1548144 1548144 0 100% / [root@jttest ~]# lvextend -L 2G /dev/vg_main/lv_root /etc/lvm/archive/.lvm_jttest.pp.local_5523_51321310: write error failed: No space left on device Volume group "vg_main" metadata archive failed. /etc/lvm/cache/.cache.tmp: write error failed: No space left on device So I can't extend a logical volume if there's no space in /etc? Granted, I only need to delete like 2k worth of files in the same logical volume as /etc to make the above work, but I don't recall lvresize or lvextend requiring space in /etc to do a resize. Has this always been the case? I don't have any 5.x servers handy to test this with. Can anyone verify? If this is new, this seems less-than-ideal. /etc itself rarely fills up, so, in theory, I could make it its own LV, but that's even less ideal. For now, I'll stick to deleting just enough to do the extend/resize. johnny

Hi, I am trying to adapt my kickstart usb key to optionally auto-setup mdraid on two disks... But I have one server that keeps attaching the usb key to sda instead of sdc... My kickstart creates the raid devices on sdb and sdc partitions; but then I expect it not to work once the key is unplugged and the disks fall back to sda and sdb... Can I just modify mdadm.conf at the end, just before rebooting? What about grub? Thx, JD

What is the preferred method for submitting patches from upstream projects ? I have two patches for libvirt-0.8.1.el6_0.6. One adds ESX 4.1 support to things like virt-v2v ( http://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2010-July/msg00480.html) and the second fixes the broken "virsh snapshot-create" ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727709) All I did really was get them to work with the CentOS 6 version of libvirt. Dear All I have installed Asterisk on my centos 5.0 and I have two other centos 6.0 and centos 5.6 with ekiga sip client. The centos 6.0 can make successful sip calls but centos 5.6 cannot. Among the Asterisk logs, I found that the centos 6.0 has ekiga 3.2.6 but centos 5.6 has ekiga 2.0.2 . How can I install/upgrade my older ekiga? Thank you

reading vdump files?

I have a lot of data in some vdump files backed up from a Tru64 system that I now need to recover to a Centos server. We no longer have any servers running Tru64, is there any way to extract/convert them on a "standard" linux system? Ideally converting in bulk to a tar would do. Any ideas? Can't boot Centos6 ext4 partition from GAG bootloader

Have just installed Centos-6 from a Linux Format DVD. The install went smoothly, although the installer inisisted that the root partition had to be formatted ext4. When my GAG boot loader tried to boot from that root partition, it was unable do so. Elsewhere I read that GAG cannot boot from an ext4 parititon. I there any way tp persuade Centos-6 to use an ext3 root partition? -- /\/\aurice (Retired in Surrey, UK)

questions about upgrading

I'm pretty new to the task of upgrading CentOS or RedHat o.s.'s. I'm more familiar with upgrading Debian based o.s.'s. Here are my questions: 1) will yum ever upgrade the major version? I understand that there is no upgrade path from v5.x to v6.x, but is that always the case? e.g. was there an upgrade path from v4.x -> v5.x? If yum is capable of doing so, what are the command-line arguments necessary? 2) can I upgrade a minor version to any other greater minor number, or only to the greatest? E.g. if i have a v5.4 box, can i upgrade to v5.5 or v5.6, or only to v5.7 (currently the latest)? 3) if an upgrade delivers a new kernel, am I obligated to run it (i.e. will the old kernel remain installed, or will the upgrade remove the old kernel)? If not, does the upgrade automatically update grub such that the new kernel becomes the default? Will the upgraded box function properly without running the new kernel? 4) aside from when an upgrade includes a new kernel, how can I tell when a reboot is necessary? I gather that a new glibc may require services to be restarted, but is a reboot strictly necessary? 5) is there a way to apply only the updates that were made for the given minor version you're currently at? E.g. if I'm at v5.5, how can I only apply updates that were made prior to v5.6's availability? Thanks, Jon

CentOS and Scientific Linux Cern installations with FAI

I'm very happy to announce, that FAI (Fully automatic Installation) now can install and configure CentOS and Scientific Linux Cern (SLC). You can use a Debian FAI server for installing CentOS version 5 and 6 or SLC 5 and 6. As an example I've also built a FAI multi-distribution CD which installs those three different Linux distributions with different configurations. Get this ISO image from http://fai-project.org/fai-cd/ This installation is very quick. I've done a CentOS 6.0 installation (with graphical desktop) in 199 seconds (in a kvm instance on a quad-core 3.2GHz, hard disk in RAM) and it only needs 490 seconds on the real hardware when installing from CD. Hi List, Before I spend hours chasing this - my initial google search seems to indicate that javaWS and JNLP apps with sound do not work on CentOS systems. The developer's website says they support :- *Linux* *Supported OS’s and recommended versions of Java* * Linux o openSUSE 11 (64 bit with 64 bit JVM) o Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit with 64 bit JVM) * Pentium III 1 GHz processor * Sun Java 1.5.0_17 or Sun Java 1.6.0_12 or greater is recommended I have Oracle's java v1.6.0_26 installed - the java app opens up and appears to be functioning fine, however the wizard for setting up the sound, even though it recognizes my sound card fails to actually play any sound. I have a dedicated server from 1&1 (http://1and1.co.uk/) A 'yum list updates' today showed me that the 5.7 update was available (it's probably been there for a while, I don't check that often). Any suggestion is appreciated, I cannot reinstall those boxes with 6.0 for at least 4/5 months.

CentOS 6.0 Heartbeat missing logd??

Hello list, Working on migrating my existing High-Availability setups from CentOS 5.3 to 6.0, both x86_64. I generally setup a fairly simple 2 node active/passive cluster using DRBD , Heartbeat, and Pacemaker. Use these clusters to run our proprietary Medical software plus a few key services ( openvpn , Digi PortServer Daemon, etc.). I had a procedure in place for doing all of this under 5.3 and was hoping to basically duplicate the same thing on CentOS 6 as an early step in moving all the servers we build to EL6. I expected some hurdles along the way. New versions of the needed software, the new ext4 file system, my move from standard partitioning to LVM , ect . Biggest issue up till now was that the pacemaker package from CentOS base (pacemaker-1.1.2-7.el6.x86_64.rpm) was built with no support for Heartbeat , surprisingly. That was easy to fix with a quick source rpm rebuild, but now I have run into a new wall I am hoping someone can help me with. The latest Heartbeat package from EPEL (heartbeat-3.0.4-1.el6.x86_64.rpm) I thought would be the easy way to go for EL6 (was using v3.0.3 on EL5), but it appears to be missing the logd daemon that it is supposed to include. Heartbeat logd With Heartbeat v3.0.3 I had the daemon installed as expected as: /etc/ init .d/ logd . In CentOS 6, I installed the v3.0.4 from EPEL and there is no logd installed. Of course heartbeat is complaining that logd is not running, but giving me no more info. So I snagged the source rpm and dug around thinking maybe I had to rebuild that myself too, but I find no mention of logd is these sources anywhere. Surely I am not the first to try to run a Heartbeat/Pacemaker cluster in CentOS 6, am I?? Can anyone shed some light on this? Googled around most of the afternoon yesterday but found no answers, or even anyone else having the same issue. Moving to another messaging layer is not something I really want to consider here. We only build a dozen of so HA setups a year so I try to keep them as similar as possible to make supporting them easier on my team. I used to work directly with Linbit on issues like this but last year the higher-ups in my company decided I knew enough about this stuff already and we dropped our support contract with them, doh ! Cons of disabling *.i386 and *.i686 in a 64bit Distribution

Can anybody give me a reason why this would be a bad idea. So the premise for this question is that I setup an exclude=*.i368,*.i686 in my yum.conf. While doing a yum update I come across missing package dependencies for instance mkinitrd for the i386 package. I noticed there is already one for x86_64. I realized during the kickstart install that some of these *.i386 got installed before I could enable the exclude in the yum.conf. So the questions I pose is... why are some of these *.i386 packages getting installed on a 64bit distro? is there any harm is removing them all? I guess I could spin up a virtual and try, but wanted to see what the census already knows about this matter as well. trouble booting install CD on old machine

Hi all, I'm having a bit of an issue booting the full 5.7 install CD on an older machine. I downloaded the ISOs earlier today, checked the sha1sums, and burned the CDs with no reported errors. But when I try to boot, the isolinux banner comes up quickly, but then instead of the boot prompt, I get a completely blank screen. After 30-60 seconds, I get a message in purple, the exact wording I don't recall, but something like "can't boot, please restart". Many years ago I put CentOS 4 on this machine, so I know it can boot CD media, and earlier today I booted an older UBCD, so I know that it can successfully boot from CD at the present time. (I didn't have time to test the CD I burned in another box; I will do that next time I have the CD.) What other options do I have for getting 5.7 on this box? I have a few ideas: --do some troubleshooting with the 5.7 CD. I don't really know how to go about this, and there's no guarantee it'll end up with being able to boot in the end. --perhaps an older CentOS 5 ISO will work better? Testing this will be fairly quick but is not sure to work. --remove the system disk, put it into another system that is known to boot the 5.7 CD, install there, then put the disk back. This could be somewhat time consuming (the machine is in a rack, and the system drive is buried in the chassis, not hot-swappable), but is pretty sure to work. --try to boot from USB. As I said, it's an old box, so I'm not sure it supports booting over USB media. There were no "boot from USB" options in the BIOS; I could try to flash the firmware, but that seems excessive for this sort of issue. Other thoughts/suggestions? Any ideas why I'd be seeing this particular boot behavior? It's not something I've seen before; either booting fails before even reaching isolinux, or the kernel panics on finding some exotic and/or broken piece of hardware. --keith -- kkeller(a)wombat.san-francisco.ca.us

Yum update to 5.7 unexpected results

I have a couple machines running 5.6 fully updated from cr repo. When I did 'yum update' this morning it found 8 updates: centos-release-5-7.el5 centos-release-notes-5.7-0 ghostscript 8.70-6.el5_7.3 nspr 4.8.8-1.el5_7 nss 3.12.10-4.el5 nss-tools 3.12.10-4.el5 ntp-4.2.2p1-15.el5 initscripts-8.45.38-2.el5 However yum reported 404 on everything but ntp and initscripts. I installed ntp and initscripts individually and yum continued to report 404 on the rest of the updates on both machines. One machine i386, the other x86_64. I did a 'yum clean all' followed by 'yum update' and it installed centos-release and centos-release-notes but not nss, nss-tools, ghostscript or nspr updates. []# cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5.7 (Final) []# rpm -q nss nss-tools ghostscript nspr nss-3.12.8-4.el5_6 nss-tools-3.12.8-4.el5_6 ghostscript-8.70-6.el5 nspr-4.8.6-1.el5_5 Both machines had identical results and appear to be fully updated to 5.7 but with at least four packages not updated. Run commands automatically when bringing up/down network interfaces?

I'm looking for a capability similar to Debian/Ubuntu's pre/post up/down network commands capability. The problem: we've got a colo in which hosts talk directly to the hosting provider's router (through a bridging firewall) and hence our hosts MAC addresses are cached by the router. We should be able to solve this by pinging the router directly when bringing up the interface, rather than waiting (a day) for the router's ARP cache to expire. Yes, this means we're switching which hosts respond to a specific IP address, yes, we have to do this periodically. This works for me on Centos 5.6. It may assist newcomers to the Linux world of Centos. whois 51.51.51.51 produces a normal and conventional display of data. However since ARIN, the North American registrar of IP addresses, "modernised" its WHOIS processing, a query to whois 64.64.64.64 will produce a one line summary of possible matches, which always includes ARIN, but omits the details we used to receive before ARIN implemented its much criticised "improved" service. A one line script solves it for me (but only for ARIN network entries). #!/bin/bash whois -h whois.arin.net n + $1 I call my script .arin .arin 64.64.64.64 produces a normal output. Paul.

how to stop an in-progress fsck that runs at boot?

I can't seem to find the answer to this question via web search... I changed some hardware on a server, and upon powering it back on, got the "/dev/xxx has gone 40 days without being check, check forced" message. Now it's running fsck on a huge (2 TB) ext3 filesystem (5400 RPM drives no less). How can I stop this in-progress check? Ctrl-C doesn't seem to have any effect. Is the only answer to wait it out? Also, as a side question: I always do this---let my servers run for a very long time, power down to change/upgrade hardware, then forget about the forced fsck, then pull my hair out waiting for it to finish (because I can't figure out how to stop it once it starts). I know about tune2fs -c and -i, and also the last (or is it second to last?) column in /etc/fstab. My question is more along the lines of "best practices"---what are most people doing with regards to regular fsck's of ext2/3/4 filesystems? Do you just take the defaults, and let it delay the boot process by however long it takes? Disable it completely? Or do something like taking the filesystem offline on a running system? copying data to CF card

Hi all, under centos 5 x86_64 - I was able to run fdisk to partition a CF card, make the filesystem, copy data to the filesystem, run grub from an x86_64 system to make the CF card bootable with grub. That all worked fine. Now since switching to centos 6 x86_64 I run the exact same script to program the CF card and when I insert that CF card into the end device I get a Grub error 2. I thought maybe a bad CF card... I tried 4 more times with 4 different CF cards. Same result Grub error 2. I then thought to try going back to centos 5 and try it with one of the 4 CF cards that did not work. It works under centos 5. What might be happening here???? I can use fdisk after the script and see the partitions, I can mount the partition all files are there, Running grub gives no errors. Just at boot I get "error 2". Thanks, Jerry

Any reason why 5 is not a symlink to 5.7 whereas 4 is a symlink to 4.8? No MySQL password in ps aux!

I just noticed that some CentOS 4 or 5 machine that I don't admin but have root access to hides MySQL passwords from ps: Console 1: $ mysql -u root -pSECRET mysql > Console2: # ps aux root 32165 0.0 0.1 109408 2204 pts/1 Ss+ 11:19 0:00 mysql -u root -px xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx That is really nice, is it a MySQL feature or a CentOS feature? Hello, OK, getting ready to order a new machine and had some questions about 6.0. It will have a single 500GB HD. When I do the install, do I or should I setup a separate partition for guest OS's? From the redhat docs, it looks like the guest OS's reside at /var/lib/libvirt/images/. I may combine my windoze XP on the CentOS machine so would I need to create a partition and format that at installation? If I decide to wait and go with Windoze 7 can I still create the partition later? I would like a partition scheme that allows for easier upgrades or installs without losing data. Cannot mount NTFS filesystems under Xfce4

I have installed the following 2 packages on Centos 5.6, and used GParted to successfully create an 8GB NTFS partition, on some unused HDD space. Installed Packages Name : ntfsprogs Arch : i386 Version : 1.13.1 Release : 6.el5 Size : 1.1 M Repo : installed Summary : NTFS filesystem libraries and utilities URL : http://www.linux-ntfs.org/ Name : ntfsprogs-gnomevfs Arch : i386 Version : 1.13.1 Release : 6.el5 Size : 20 k Repo : installed Summary : NTFS GNOME virtual filesystem module URL : http://www.linux-ntfs.org/ I'm running Xfce 4, and when I try to mount the NTFS file system, I get an error box with 'ntfs - unknown filetype' I've done a complete reboot of this box. Are there some packages I have missing? i'm a newbie at building rpms. I made a few rpms years ago, but can't now make one on Centos 5. In /usr/local/rpmbuild, there are 5 subdirs: BUILD RPMS SOURCES SPECS SRPMS tmp When I type: rpmbuild -ba /usr/local/rpmbuild/SPECS/centos-release-cr-ihc.spec I get 'file not found' errors, for paths in /usr/local/rpmbuild/tmp: error: File not found: /usr/local/rpmbuild/tmp/centos-release-cr-ihc-buildroot/etc/yum.repos.d error: File not found: /usr/local/rpmbuild/tmp/centos-release-cr-ihc-buildroot/etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-cr.repo RPM build errors: File not found: /usr/local/rpmbuild/tmp/centos-release-cr-ihc-buildroot/etc/yum.repos.d File not found: /usr/local/rpmbuild/tmp/centos-release-cr-ihc-buildroot/etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-cr.repo All i did was to: 1) put a tarball in SOURCES, 2) put a spec file in SPECS, 3) rpmbuild -ba my spec file Did I miss a step?
