Does irqbalance actually do anything?

I've got several SMP machines, some running CentOS 4.3 and some running Fedora Core 4. All machine are kept fully updated. A few are Pentium3-based and a few are Pentium4-based. They are all running the irqbalance daemon. The distribution of interrupts across CPUs is indeed kept balanced, yet even after months of uptime ps shows no CPU use whatsoever by irqbalance. This from a program that is supposed to wake up every 10 (?) seconds and examine the interrupt counts. Given that there is an IRQ balancing scheme in the kernel, I have to wonder if irqbalance is actually being used. The man page for this program consists of a single-sentence description of what the program does. Nice. Does irqbalance really do anything on contemporary Red Hat-based systems? Thanks.

Nvidia card fails with new kernel 2.6.9-42.EL

I have a NVIDIA 5200 FX graphics card. After reinstalling the nvidia driver for kernel 2.6.9-42-EL and doing a startx command from lvl 3, the x window software issues a failed to get interupt from graphics driver. I tried to reinstall the graphics driver again and got the same results. I changed back to the previous kernel and reinstalled the nvidia driver and the problem went away. Problem with openvpn and tun interface

I'm scratching my head here a little. And my post to the openvpn mailing list is not getting any attention. I have an openvpn server working with Windows clients and I thought I'd try to get a client config on a CentOS box running. The client is a minimal install of CentOS and I like to use shorewall (3.2.x). I've tried to run the vpn client with the fw off and on with no change. When I start the client I cannot ping anything on the vpn net or the internal net. As near as I can tell no options are being pushed and the tun interface is not being set up. Running an ifconfig does not show the interface (it does show up on the server). Both boxes are configured with ntp and I've checked that the cert was working as far as openssl is concerned. Does anyone here run this configuration successfully? If so, was there anything you needed to do outside of loading the rpm via yum from rpmforge and setting up the keys/config? wep key generator

Dear All, I have this same problem on my ubuntu as in my Centos linux. when i use NetworkManager to connect to my NetGear Access Point with WEP security, the passphrase seems that do not make the correct KEY, so i had to check in the NetGear and enter it manually in EX mode, using iwconfig on CentOS and the networking utility in ubuntu. Ok, after this introduction this is my question. Do you know any WEP Key generator starting from a passphrase? for linux? i have found a lot for windows and on-line wich work really good, http://www.powerdog.com/wepkey.cgi this one generates exactly the same as my NetGear AP. but offcourse if I can't connect to the network I can't use an online tool :( any ideas? thanks Guillermo.

USB Pendrive automounting

My USB Pendrive gets mounted everytime I put it on the USB port (/dev/sda on /media/usbdisk). This behaviour is the desired. Now I want the OS to automaticaly include the mount option iocharset=iso8859-1 everytime it mounts it. Is there a way to tell haldaemon (or other software) do this, instead of hand-editing /etc/fstab ? -- Vilela

Alle, Has anyone gotten Zimbra to work on an installation of CentOS4.3, x86_64 architecture? I have tried to install the RHEL4 3.1.4 32-bit version with the following error: Found zimbra-core Error: attempting to install i386 packages on a x86_64 OS. Exiting... Shouldn't this work with 32-bit compat? I've also tried to install RHEL4_64 4.0.0.RC1 but post installation fails when trying to install zimbra-core with the following error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Dumping a shared archive is not supported on the Server JVM. error: %post(zimbra-core-4.0.0_RC1_272.RHEL4_64-20060814131200.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 1 I've check the CentOS and Zimbra wikis but they don't address this specific problem. perl script part eval help please?

Greetings Im am not a perl programmer yet I am trying to learn and am debugging someone elses perl run script for use on a centos production box I have and I came across this elif [ -z "${SMTP_CDB:-}" ] Can someone please shed some light on what this eval means in English please? im mainly concerned with the stuff between the two " yet I need all the help I can get what does that say? Im trying to figure out if there is a typo or something in the script. Does anyone know if the 3.8 update will fix the long-standing problem with snmp interface counters on 64 bit machines? I think it was mentioned in the RH notes, but they said that a year ago too... (The problem is that the 32 bit counters don't wrap correctly so mrtg/cacti graphs go crazy after 2 gigs of data have gone by). -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Decided for the first time to go look at the forum and see if it looked useful. Can't decide. *Lots* of Qs with few responses. Anyway, signed up. Maybe I can make some time 'cause some of those look low-level enough for me to contribute a small amount. BUT, I have one aggravation that I wonder if it can be changed. I wanted to use the same e-mail there as I use n the lists. It wouldn't let me. And I don't see a way to change it once I'm registered. Did I miss something? Can my desire be accommodated? Problems after performing yum update

I performed the update yesterday that included installing kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL and replacing ethereal with wireshark. First, the trivial... Wireshark would not run from the KDE menu without editing the menu to change the command from "wireshark" to "kdesu wireshark" because dumpcap is at usr/sbin/dumpcap instead of /usr/bin/dumpcap . Making the change causes wireshark to open root password dialog like ethereal, which it replaced. (And which makes sense.) Now, the puzzling. This is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ on an ASUS A7N8X deluxe ver 2.0 m/b. The symptom is that ntpd refuses to sync. Dropping back to kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL restores ntpd to proper operation. My first thought was that the smp code must have been incorporated in the non-smp kernel because the system mis-behaves exactly as it has in the past when Anaconda mistakenly installed the smp kernel. What clouds the picture is that when I checked the updates repository, I found both http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/4/updates/i386/RPMS/kernel-smp-2.6.9-4… and http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/4/updates/i386/RPMS/kernel-2.6.9-42.0.… which then made me wonder if there was a glitch in the build process. Has anyone else seen this?

Fetching Obsoletes list of channel: Centos4-addons

Hi I am trying to update my system and I get the following message:- "Fetching Obsoletes list of channel: Centos4-addons." The last potion of message varies form add on to extras or updates or base depends on the selection of channels. This screen was there since yesterday evening but the system is not hanging since I can cancel this operation. I don't know why this could happen and would appreciate if some one could guide me. 3DLabs Wildcat

Hi all, Has anybody managed to make this board: 3DLabs Wildcat III 6210 work under CentOS 4/Xorg ? I see on their website they had support for it until RHEL3 but no more support for RHEL4... I tried the 'glint' driver but it does not support this particular chipset. I tried the 'vesa' mode and I could get a 640x480 @ 60Hz but it's a little hard to work at that resolution ;) Any thoughts? Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I can't try most of them out until after the long UK bank holiday weekend as I only have ssh access to the server from home and don't want to disable networking! There are three network cards in the server, but I've only got the RealTek connected. Looking at /var/log/messages suggests the new kernel is handling all three NIC's differently from the old kernel. Does anyone know what no GSI means with NICs and the new kernel? Looks like 3.8 is not ready to download

This is just a heads up that 3.8 does not look ready to download. There are 3.8 files at the CentOS mirrors, but the files (including the iso images) are constantly changing or disappearing. It looks like the hard-working diligent CentOS workers are making some last minute changes before getting CentOS 3.8 out the door. I presume that there will be a posting made to this list when 3.8 is ready--I hope this doesn't end up like 3.6, when the files are uploaded but not a peep on the mailing list nor webpage that a new 3.x release of CentOS has been made. I know most people are probably using 4.x, but I prefer 3.x because I know the software on this release is guaranteed to be present in any more modern Linux distro (maybe as an updated version); CentOS 3.x is the oldest codebase being currently maintained for any free Linux distro. - Sam

Hello After updating to the 2.6.9-42 kernel, one of my boxes stall during boot with hdc lost interrupt ide-cd:cmd 0x3 timed out The older 2.6.9-35 kernel boots fine. This is a Compaq Proliant PL360. The odd part is, I have another, identical Proliant that runs the new kernel just fine. Any idea what is happening? Thanks Jamie

Surely this bind, portmap and syslogd packages came from Centos base or update. bind-chroot is not installed. Bind seems to be working fine - as a cache and as a nameserver - even with those errors. Syslog also *seems* to be ok, as it keeps logging things on /var/log/, even in /var/log/messages. I don't use Portmap, but I have left it activated. Anyways, iptables blocks it. file i/o operations...

hi... i'm trying to determine which is the better way/approach to go. should an app do a great deal of file i/o, or should it do a great deal of read/writes to a mysql db... my test app will create a number of spawned child processes, 1000's of simultaneous processes, and each child process will create data. the data will ultimately need to be inserted into a db. Approach 1 ----------- if i have each child app write to a file, i'm going to have a serious hit on the disk, for the file i/o, but i'm pretty sure Centos/RH could handle it. (although, to be honest, i don't know if there's a limit to the number of simultaneous file descriptors that the OS allows to be open at the same time.) i'm assuming that the number is multiples of magnitudes more than the number of simultaneous connections i can have with a db.... i could then have a process/app collect the information from each output file, writing the information to the db, and deleting the output files as required. Approach 2 ---------- i could have each child app write to a local db, with each child app, waiting to get the next open db connection. this is limited, as i'd run into the max connection limit for the db. i'd also have to implement a process to get the information from the local db, to the master db. .. Approach 3 ----------- i could have each child app write directly to the db.. the problem with this approach is that the db has a max regarding the number of simultaneous connections, based on system resources. this would be the cleanest solution.. so... anybody have any thoughts/comments as to how one can essentially accept 1000's-10000's of simultaneous hits with an app... i've been trying to find out if there's any kind of distributed parent/child/tiered kind of app, where information/data is more or less collected and received at the node level... thanks -bruce

Hi Yum has just updated 5 of my Linux boxes running CentOS 4.3 to the 2.6.9-42 kernel. All is well on four of the boxes, but on the fifth the network card (eth0) will not work. I've downgraded the kernel to the previous version and the network card works fine again. I've tried removing and re-installing the new kernel, but the network card won't work with it. The details of the card are as follows: lspci:- 00:0e.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10) /etc/modprobe.conf:- alias eth0 8139too Any suggestions welcomed.. Thanks Clive

Copying files from DOS environment based on archive bit

Hi Folks, I've a Linux server that has a disk on a Windows NT-based machine mounted via samba so that it appears as /share/pd on the Linux box. I am trying to automate a backup procedure that pushes files from the NT disk to another site as a ZIP file using scp. All is working OK, but I'd now like to make the backup 'incremental' so can anyone think of a way I can grab files off the NT server based on whether their archive bit is set (and then clear the bit) - I can't see that the Linux ZIP command supports this and can't see a way of doing it with mtools. I might visit this afresh and host the data files on the Linux server in due course and then have a look at tar/dar/bacula, but for the moment they must stay where they are for various technical reasons. Are they well supported enough such that a "yum update" suffices to keep them synced up with patches without having to hand edit the kernel or build special modules from 3Ware each time? Cheers,

cups configuration question

Using cups web, I configured 2 copies of a Canon color copier and on one of them, I configured it use a black and white only. This works fine for localhost printing. The cups queues are shared with other hosts on the subnet. They automatically see the printers but when they print to the shared queue, the page comes out in color unless they specifically change it and do not consider the cups configuration option. as far as I can tell, the difference is in the ppd file that is saved by the cups web interface... grep DefaultColorModel ppd/Canon_5870* ppd/Canon_5870_bw.ppd:*DefaultColorModel: Gray ppd/Canon_5870.ppd:*DefaultColorModel: Default which I would have thought would have been transmitted to the user printing via a cups shared printer but it isn't. Any thoughts? Craig

No reiserfs support after kernel-update

Hi Folks, I'm using CentOS 4.3 on my desktop. All works well - until today. On my machine are also other 'nixe like Kubuntu with reiserfs - filesystem. Before update no problems with this partitions. But after the update from today(kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL) I get a message "no support for reiserfs is in the current kernel" and mounting these partitons are impossible. Why ??? What can I do to get back my reiserfs-support with this kernel. Booting with the old kernel (2.6.9-34.108.plus.c4 ) brings me now (why????) the same message and same problems. Thx Timothy

Kernel 2.6.9.42 (.0 and .0.2) Wireless Problems

WPA-2 (WPA Enterprise) fails with the new kernel(s) using ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant. I haven't tried other authentication modes because that entails changes in the wireless setup which I am loathe to make right now. (It's a Broadcom mini pci card, so I have to use ndiswrapper with this Dell laptop. Bummer!). Rebuilding the newest wpa_supplicant rpm from the FC5 source rpm's and the latest and greatest ndiswrapper from tarball does not help. The old kernel still connects nicely and the new kernel still refuses to authenticate to the radius. Everything else is happy with the radius. Running the -dd mode on wpa_supplicant gives me a lot of data which seems to point to an inability to process key data with the new kernel. Has anyone gotten the ndiswrapper/wpa_supplicant combination to work on a fully updated RH EL 4.4 system? Anyone with similar issues on the new kernel?

Struggling with javac

I've installed jdk-1_5_0_08-linux-i586.rpm and Tomcat. Working through some initial test install programs, I am finding that I can't seem to compile .java files into classes. For instance... javac -classpath /usr/local/tomcat/common/lib/servlet.jar HelloWorld.java as instructed fails with a gij: unrecognized option -- `-classpath' Try `gij --help' for more information. So then I notice there is no servlet.jar file, but instead a servlet-api.jar.. I change the command and it fails with the same problem. Trying the command without the -class and without the path fails with path errors. So it's sort of like this -classpath switch is either pathed wrong somewhere or is deprecated? This is on a CentOS 3 server. Anybody run into this? Do you have a solution? Thanks, John Hinton

Hi, My Centos 4.3 Server was installed with the english language only. The server hosts several files in spanish and the PHP code that themes the webpages uses the charset "iso-8859-1". If I do an "export" in my system it shows: LANG="en_US.UTF-8" Does apache or the operating system needs to have the charset changed? Where? question on mounting a partition that is in a disk image

How do I mount a partition that is in an image file? I have a file called centos.img that has 3 partitions in the file. I need to copy data to the third partition on that image file. I have seen things about a loop back device (which is fine) but then it talked about an offset parameter and I dont know what that is or more importantly what number to use. I hope I'm on the right track. How do I mount it? THanks, Jerry

Centos 4.3 + KDE + mtrr error

Hello. I'm running Centos 4.3 with KDE from CentOS. There're some "unsupported" packages, like kernel 2.6.9-34.108.plus.c4smp, Picasa and Google Earth. Picasa and Google Earth had never showed critical problems (before), although they're beta versions. Today, I started Picasa and Google Earth at the same time, and the X became a black screen, like it was killed and was just trying to start again, but couldn't. The xdm mouse cursor showed up, but suddenly disappeared again, and this was looping forever. Then I went into another computer, 'ssh'ed into that one, and typed 'dmesg'. The last important lines are these: application Picasa2 uses obsolete OSS audio interface [drm:i915_wait_irq] *ERROR* i915_wait_irq: EBUSY -- rec: 3123 emitted: 3125 mtrr: base(0x80020000) is not aligned on a size(0x300000) boundary (this last line kept repeating many times) 'top' showed almost 100% for process X, that disappeared and appeared again with a different PID. It seems that X got killed for some reason, and xdm was trying to start up again, but got killed every time with that mtrr error. My video is Intel 945 onboard, but I guess it uses Intel 915 driver, so that i915 makes sense. I think this problem has to do with the video card/driver. Could someone explain to me what may have happened ? -- Vilela

Problem with Yum

centos 4.3 on esx server high load early hours carn't connect.

Hi posted this on the forum but then found the mailing list :-) so hope it's ok to post to the list aswell. we have a centos 4.3 server running samba, winbind and squid authenticating by winbind to our NT domain. Once in a while in the early hours it has the below error in /var/log/messages this causes the machine to fail and we carn't connect to it. It's double dutch to me, hopefully someone on here will have a suggestion though. Very slow on I/O?

I seem to be having a problem with CentOS releases 4.2 and 4.3. On a fresh install (on two very different pieces of hardware, one Dell PowerEdge server and one Compaq Presario), the system seems to be extremely slow. It happens primarily during any hard disk I/O. It's slow enough that my mouse skips slowly instead of moving smoothly, and I am unable to type. It seems to freeze for milliseconds at a time, which makes typing difficult because while it is frozen it seems to not accept keystrokes (that is, if I type the letter 'f' twelve times, only four of them may appear, depending on timing). It may be unrelated, but the clock seems to go more slowly during I/O as well (i.e. during times of I/O the clock runs behind more and more). If I were to extract a large tarball, I would have to wait for the while thing to finish before I could interact with the system at all A simple recompile of the kernel from kernel.org sources (which, as you can imagine, takes quite a long time) fixes the problem entirely, though. So is there something that differs wildly regarding the I/O scheduler between the stock CentOS kernel and the stock kernel from kernel.org? It would really be more convenient to be able to keep our kernel up- to-date automatically using the built-in packaging tools, so I hope that someone has seen the problem and has a work-around

CentOSPlus kernel - Request for input

OK, I am building the new CentOSPlus kernel for i386/x86_64. It is based on the 2.6.9-42.EL kernel that will be part of CentOS-4.4. Currently it has all the features of the older plus kernels and all the items turned on by the upstream provider in their main kernel ... except that XFS is being removed from this kernel (and added by a standalone module that has newer sgi code for xfs). I am not going to add patches to the kernel, but I will entertain requests to turn on features that are included and require users to have to recompile their kernels (that don't require adding patches). If you currently have to change the config file and recompile the kernel, tell me the config items you are turning on and I will see if I can roll them into the new CentOSPlus kernel. syslogd/klogd problem on CentOS4.3

Hi all, I have installed a CentOS4.3 box and migrated some application from FC1 to the new box, everything else runs perfectly except syslogd/klogd. /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog starts without any problem, but there is nothing logged into /var/log/messages, even I restart the service. However, I tried to shut the service down and run "syslogd -m 0 &" and "klogd -x &" as root from shell, it works good. I have spent a lot of time, but still can not figure out why it does not work when starts by init as a daemon. Anybody had the same issue before? Any suggestion is highly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff L

Hello, I've been talking with some friends about the Redhat's SRPMs release issue. I've been reading the trademarks and some points of GPL. But get some confusion around the questions: Is redhat forced to release the sources of its product? Is redhat forced, due GPL licence, to make the sources of its product available to others (including those who don't buy the distro), and permit changes whenever the trademark guidelines were respected? There is some legal arguments that force the redhat's sources to be released. Is redhat's sources released by its kindness or because there is some legal document that enforced that. In a past post, I read that even if redhat close the distro, it has to release the sources to the client how buy the distro, so he/she would rebuild it and release a new one based on it as totally free. So, will CentOS have to buy the redhat distro to rebuild it and release it for free to the community in a close case ? Have we some guarantee that redhat will not close the srpms and the rebuilding will be safe ?. What does CentOS mean with: CentOS has no relationship with Red Hat(r), Inc. or RHEL. What happen with those countries that are not allowed to use redhat, can they use CentOS ? does redhat want this ? is this permitted by some legal argument. using windbind to connect to AD

Hello, After a couple of years using Samba as a DC I figured I would start working it the other way around. I'm using CentOS, the latest and tried to use the GUI manager. I am sort of confused as there are acutally 2 windows. I filled out both and supplied the name of the AD administrator. Do I just put the AD domain in there with .realm after it? (eg testdomain.com.realm)? I tried with and without I then tried to login with an AD user, but used his username only (eg user1) but it didn't work. I am assuming that with this type of authentication, I will be able to login with user's from the AD directory... Has anyone worked with this setup before? Thanks, James

I have been asking on the qemu list how to get bridge network mode working under centos 4... To no avail. The following script is what I have tried as my /etc/qemu-ifup. Hi, Is it possible to create one raid volume of 3.3 TB (9550SX-8lp X WD5000YS - 8nos) and create a file system with ext3? (CentOs4.3 64bit) The maximum I am getting is 1.24tb and fdisk returns no more space available. But when I say fdisk /dev/sda it list full size of 3.3 TB. Flash streams sound distorted

Hi gang! I'm hoping for some advice here,... I've been having this problem for a while and have come to the point where I need someone else's guidance/suggestions/help... I'm running a Cenotos-4 system. It was originally a TAO Linux-1 system, that was upgraded to Tao-4, and subsequently switched (via yum, using the procedure created by the Tao maintainer with--I assume--assitance from the Centos maintainers) to Centos-4. Ever since the upgrade from tao-1 to tao-4, Flash audio is horribly distorted. I've reinstalled the flash-7 plugin more than once, most recently today. Today I also went through the entire system making sure there is only a single copy of the files flashplayer.xpt and libflashplayer.so, and that they are the newest ones from today. What brings it to a head today is that my local NPR station appears to have switched to providing their audio stream as flash. At least I am no longer offered any choice (it used to allow us to choose windows media, real, or quicktime, all of which worked with mplayer), flash being what I get. I'm open to suggestions. Updating Kernel with Up2date

Hi, I have installed Centos 4.3 64bit with Kernel 2.6.9-34 using a driver disk for 3ware raid controller. I had partitioned this raid disk with Parted, and made ext3 file system on it. mounted and updated in /etc/fstab. It automatically mounts when I reboot the machine. Now when I do an up2date and update the kernel to 2.6.9-34-0.2 the system doesn't recognize the raid disk. I have checked the /lib/modules/2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/scsi folder and found the files 3w.9xxx.ko and 3w.xxxx.ko. But when the system boots with the new kernel it doesn't detect the 3 ware Raid disk. Any idea why this could happen. ? Thanks Rajeev R Veedu

Interesting thing is that I have VMWare installed on this machine and, if I install the Nokia Suite inside it, it can access the phone without problems. So all hardware related parts are working. Anyway, kernel load the cdc_acm module, and gives me /dev/ttyACM0. Accessing this tty (cu -l, minicom, take your pick), I can issue AT commands and get responses. So far so good. But then I try to access it using some software (gnokii, obex, gammu), it simply won't work. Trying to use usbserial instead of cdc_acm gives exactly the same result. Does anyone has any better experience with this setup ? Tape backup question.

Hello, I want to backup my PE2800 on tape but I'm not sure how to do this. My PE2800 has a RAID5 setup with 2 72GB SCSI disks and a Seagate DAT-2 72GB internal tape-streamer and I'm running Centos 4.3 with the latest yum updates. I'm not sure if this tape-streamer is recognised by the OS properly because it doesn't show up along with my DVD/floppy I also recieved with the server a copy of Galaxy Express software from Dell but from what it looks this seems to be more of a client/server backupprogram and not really functional on a standalone server. So how does one backs up + restores a complete HD (incl. MBR) like a ghost image or something on a tape. Any good software or howto's you can suggest would be much appreciated. kind regards, Geert

Hello friends I've problem with my Centos 4.3. On start some information: 1. serwer HP DL 380 x Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.40GHz 2. RAM 4GB 3. HDD storage FC 4. kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp #1 SMP This serwer is working with another one (that some configuration) in RHEL cluster (locking by DLM), as a file serwer with samba-3.0.22. Samba have about 100 simultaneus sessions. Problem is with load of my system. It's growing up. I disabled/enabled samba processes, disabled backup system, disabled antyvirus for samba, but this didn't help. CPU utilization is 5-10%, ram utilization ~2GB. I don't have any idea what's wrong. Hello all, Just a little info for users of Apache 2 amoung you who use bandwidth limitation, mainly ISPs. I was using mod_bwshare (old: bw_share), one of the only bandwidth limitation by IP available, during one year with big problems for the bandwidth limitation (by IP and maximum amount), on CentOS 4. That introduced a slowness on the apache server and depending on the main DNS used, it did result in pages being stuck for about 5 seconds every so often. It was hard to define where the problem came from (apache, php, mysql, etc..). Now the problem has been found, and this has been solved in mod_bwshare V0.2.0. It did force a double hostname lookup before, which was not needed and slowed down the user's response time of apache. The DNS requests are now also much less frequent, only one per new IP logged, instead of more than 10 per seconds before. I think that now it is very reliable (tested on my production server), and thus it might interest some of you. Hope this helps someone, sorry if it disturbs anybody but I felt this important to tell it here as I had no answer when I posted my requests to find the solution. Greetings, Daniel

hello all, I am trying to expand my /var file system which resides on a logical volume. I successfully issued the lvextend command. However when I try to issue the ext2online command I receive a return code of 3 which the man pages indicates: ext2online /var ext2online v1.1.18 - 2001/03/18 for EXT2FS 0.5b ext2online: group 0, block 7 not reserved ext2online: unable to resize /dev/mapper/root_vg-lv_var echo $? 3 3 Error in pre-resizing (user space) operation Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong. Install mgetty if not already present on your system. Go to /etc/mgetty+sendfax directory. If you have CallerID feature on your phone line (and you should get it if you don't have it yet), edit dialin.config file and add telephone numbers you will be dialing from. At least this will prevent clueless script-kiddies from getting login prompt on your modem line. I know that some of my modems get regullary probed from strange phone numbers (and those are dedicated modem lines -- no voice calls on them, not listed in white pages, too often on too many lines to be the simple case of wrong number). While there, check login.config file. If you don't want PPP on it, make sure /AutoPPP/ is commented (should be default). Make sure "* - - /bin/login @" line is not commented (should be last line in the default config file). That's the line that will give you login prompt. Edit /etc/inittab and add something like this: s0:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -D -n 2 -s 115200 /dev/ttyS0 The "-n 2" tells mgetty to pick up the phone after second ring. You need to wait till second ring because telephone company sends CallerID information between first and second ring. If you configured mgetty to answer after first ring, it would never get CallerID information. Execute "telinit q" as root (this tells init process to reread inittab file). Configure and connect modem and you should be set to go. I do not recommend allowing root to login directly from modem line (could be configured by editing /etc/securetty and /etc/security/access.conf files if needed, but not wise idea). Login as normal user, than su to root. --

I have heard rumblings about the new kernel for 4.4 A change was made to the kernel for disk I/O to make it better/faster. I havnt heard/seen anything about what that really translates to. Any thoughts/opinions on this. jerry

Once it is in auto-answer mode it will answer when you dial it and then you will see what the is transmitted to it via the serial cable. Then follow the instructions for setting up Linux to use the serial port for output/input. If you don't have that information at your fingertips it is as follows: 2.3 Configuring Headless Operation By configuring “headless” operating we will be able to manage the system via a cable plugged into the serial port of the system. This obviates the need to plug a keyboard and monitor into it to perform changes. In order to edit the /etc/secuertty file type: vi /etc/securetty Typing this command will open the /etc/secuertty file for editing. Add the following line to the end of the file: ttyS0 This line sets the Operating System to allow root to log on to the serial port in addition to the console. After you have made these changes to the /etc/securetty file press the colon (: ) key and then type wq to quit vi and save the changes. 2.3.3 Changes to the Boot Loader In order for boot-time messages to be sent to the console, including the boot loader information some changes must be made to the configuration file for it. The boot loader that CentOS uses is GRUB. As such, the configuration file is /etc/grub.conf. The first change that we must make is to add some lines after the timeout line in the GRUB configuration file. In order to edit the /etc/grub.conf file type: vi /etc/grub.conf Typing this command will open the /etc/grub.conf file for editing. Add the following two lines after the timeout line in the configuration file: serial --unit=0 --speed=9600 terminal --timeout=5 serial console Another change that we must make in the GRUB configuration file is to tell the kernel to send out all kernel-level messages to the serial port in addition to the console. That is done by adding the following line to the end of the kernel line: console=tty1 console=ttyS0 After you have made these changes to the /etc/grub.conf file press the colon (: ) key and then type wq to quit vi and save the changes. Tomcat Virtualhost Question

I have tomcat up and running (manager operational) and am serving genuine Apache Tomcat Error Reports from a virtualhost. :) So, it looks like I'm good up to the point of creating a WEB-INF directory inside of the virtual docroot. Can someone tell me how this should be done? Permissions.. contents.. or if I'm just supposed to pull this from somewhere in the Tomcat installation? Hi Mike, It may not be what you did, but rather the sk98lin drivers being horribly broken, especially with the newer Yukon 88E805X gigabit NICs. I just struggled with a backported version of the sky2 driver in the 2.6.9-34.0.2 kernel and the 88E8055 Yukon NIC (as found on the latest Fujitsu T4210 tablet convertible). Unfortunately, the backported drivers I was sent only go back as far as 2.6.7 for compatibility. John Linville at Red Hat has some 2.4.21-44 test kernels that have slightly newer sky2 drivers: http://people.redhat.com/linville/kernels/rhel3/ I used his RHEL4 test kernels and it worked well, but alas other issues kept me from using it, and I had to backport the driver myself.
