Power Fail Protection Update

Many thanks to those that responded to my original posting with information about Network UPS Tools and commercial UPS products. In our planning a path forward to implement UPS-based power fail protection, we have come across what appears to be an issue with the state of the CentOS 6 machines being UPS protected. Most of these machines are desktop/deskside machines that are likely to be idle during non-work hours. It is also likely that they will be hibernating or in a power save mode. In the power save mode, these machines do not respond to keyboard or mouse activity. They also do not respond to network traffic such as a ping from other systems on the network. The method we use to wake them up is a quick push on the power button when the hibernation state is indicated by the button's yellow LED display. This state of hibernation leaves us wondering if these systems will be able to respond to network messages sent by the UPS. We have not yet made it all the way through the NUT and UPS documentation. The hibernation answer may very well be therein, but we have not found it so far. Any help or direction regarding the hibernation issue as it relates to UPS power fail protection will be appreciated. Power Fail Protection

Some of our largest systems run Windows because it supports engineering applications that we use regularly. These applications have unattended runs that often take between ten and fifteen hours to complete. We have taken the recommendation of the application supplier and equipped these Windows machines with UPS protection for 30 minutes at full load. The UPSs are Ethernet connected. A support application on the Windows engineering machine communicates with the UPS to detect and address any facility power failure. The long run engineering application is then suspended at a restart point and the system is shut down. We initiate job completion manually from the suspension restart point after the system has reliable power and is rebooted. If we wanted to protect our CentOS systems from facility power failure in a similar way, is there operating system or other standard support that we might employ? Most of the Linux-based applications are not as critical as the engineering applications on the Windows machines. There is a significant amount of processor idle time on several of the CentOS systems during non-work hours when the systems are unattended. Several CentOS systems are supported currently with UPSs, but they run out and the system loses power if it is unattended.

Custom kickstart post section on usb thumbdrive

Hi All, I am attempting to create a custom USB drive for kickstart install. I found this: 1. get the ISO file of CentOS 7 2. mount -o loop CentOS-7.0*.iso /mnt/ 3. mkdir -p /CentOS-7-ISO-respin/{CentOS-7-unpacked,CentOS-7-iso} 4. rsync -avz /mnt/ /CentOS-7-ISO-respin/RHEL-7-unpacked 5. put your kickstart file into /CentOS-7-ISO-respin/RHEL-7-unpacked 6. add a new line to /CentOS-7-ISO-respin/RHEL-7-unpacked/isolinux/isolinux.cfg (this way you can use the ISO also from a DVD) label linux_ks menu label ^Install CentOS 7 with Kickstart kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img inst.stage2=hd:sdb2:/ ks=hd:sdb1:/ks.cfg 7. create the ISO with: /usr/bin/genisoimage -untranslated-filenames -volid 'CentOS-7.0-KS-x86_64' -J -joliet-long -rational-rock -translation-table -input-charset utf-8 -x ./lost+found -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/ boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table 8. dd if=/CentOS-7-ISO-respin/CentOS-7-CSB-iso/CentOS-7.0-KS-x86_64-DVD.iso of=/dev/XXX (where XXX is the Device Name of your USB drive without the partition number e.g. /dev/sdb) (Careful, that command destroys all data on the Stick) But I would also like to create a custom directory on the ISO and put some files in there for a custom POST section. Centos 7 specific cure for Spamassassin DNS lookup problem

I have the following error message in my /var/log/spamd spf: lookup failed: available_nameservers: No DNS servers available! Having Googled the error message I've found a number of responses which involve patching Perl or Spamassassin or other cures. Before I start changing things I was wondering if there was a Centos 7 specific resolution. Where possible, on production machines I prefer to stay with RPM's rather than amending software directly. Also, many of these responses are over 10 years old, so I'm a little sceptical about their success today. Gary

what is CodeMeter and why is it running on my CentOS box?

I just stumbled over /var/log/CodeMeter, which contains a number of large log files. I know I'm getting old and forgetful, but I can't remember intentionally installing that package. Yum just says "installed" instead of listing a repo. Looking at codemeter.com, it seems to work with something called a "cm stick". I don't have one, don't want one, and never heard of them. Is there any reason I should be leery of just "yum remove"ing the package? thanks! Acroread9 crash in CentOS7

Hello, I'm getting a crash with acroread on my CentOS7 (AdobeReader_enu-9.5.5-1.i486). I install the official rpms from ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/, tried 9.5.5, and former v9, v8, v7. /usr/bin/acroread loads well, but when you click a menu, bang. Same if you start acroread w/ a .pdf filename in parameter, the window opens up then crashes. I modified the acroread script to run the binary from within gdb, I get this: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0xf5437cee in compute_face () from /lib/libcairo.so.2 Unfortunately, the system completely hangs when it happens (acroread from gdb) and I must kill acroread from a tty, so I cannot get a more detailed backtrace for now. There's 1500 to 3000 line changes to Btrfs code per kernel release. There's too much to backport most of it. Serious fixes do get backported by upstream to longterm kernels, but to what degree, you have to check the upstream changelogs to know about it. And right now most backports go to only 4.4 and 4.9. Red Hat are working on a new user space wrapper and volume format based on md, device mapper, LVM, and XFS. http://stratis-storage.github.io/ https://stratis-storage.github.io/StratisSoftwareDesign.pdf It's an aggressive development schedule and as so much of it is journaling and CoW based I have no way to assess whether it ends up with its own set of problems, not dissimilar to Btrfs. We'll just have to see. But if there are underlying guts in the device-mapper that do things better/faster/easier than Btrfs, the Btrfs devs have said they can hook into device-mapper for these things to consolidate code base, in particular for the multiple device handling. By its own vague time table it will be years before it has "rough ZFS features" and again estimating bootloader support, and to what degree other distros pick up on it, it very well could end up being widely adopted, or it could be a Red Hat only thing in practice. Canonical appears to be charging ahead with OpenZFS included by default out of the box (although not for rootfs yet I guess), and that has an open ended and possibly long window before legal issues get tested. But this is by far the most cross platform solution: FreeBSD, Illumos, Linux, macOS. And ZoL has RHEL/CentOS specific packages. But I can't tell you for sure what ZoL's faulty device behavior is either, whether it ejects faulty or flaky devices and when, or if like Btrfs is just tolerates it. The elrepo.org folks can still sanely set CONFIG_BTRFS_FS=m, but I suspect if RHEL unsets that in RHEL 8 kernels, that CentOS will do the same. -- Chris Murphy

Hello there, using CentOS7 with Mate desktop.. when I run gnome apps, the mate look doesn't apply to them. Say that my mate theme is dark. I've even logged in my user in Gnome, set a dark theme too. But back to Mate, Gnome apps are still light-grey (default theme). Is there a gnome-settings daemon to start or what? Tk and Qt apps get the right (dark) theme automagically, BTW. Regards, -- wwp

I am building a new system using an Kingston 240GB SSD drive I pulled from my notebook (when I had to upgrade to a 500GB SSD drive). Centos install went fine and ran for a couple days then got errors on the console. Hello All, these days one of my tasks is connecting some Centos7 laptops to Freeipa, also running on Centos7. After doing that, some users report nog being able to unlock their screens. Only after reboot are they able to login again. Hello list, I'm desperately trying to get the latest Oxalis software (https://github.com/difi/oxalis ) to run in Tomcat on CentOS 6.9 but I'm getting a obscure Java error. Something about a a method not found: Java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: sun.security.provider.certpath.OCSP.check(Ljava/security/cert/X509Certif Has anyone succesfully implemented this on CentOS 6.x ? Tomcat is running fine behind Apache. All software up to date. Tried many things already, also install Oxalis from source but that fails with different problems. I found that OSCP checking is default disabled in Java (true ?) and tried to enable it with by adding the commandline switches: java -Dcom.sun.security.enableCRLDP=true \ -Dcom.sun.net.ssl.checkRevocation=true but no luck I filed a bug report on github, details about the exact error: https://github.com/difi/oxalis/issues/297 Any help appreciated. -- Paul

Hello, I am running httpd-2.4.6-45.el7.centos.x86_64 with php-fpm-7.0.22-1.el7.remi.x86_64 (on CentOS 7). My main problem: On this httpd server I have several vhosts running, but apparently I am facing intermittent problems with php-fpm communication on only one of them. Most of the sites are WordPress or Joomla Applications (running with mysql). Everything seems right: low load, all websites are operating fine, except this one, but only intermittently. What replaces the "grub" command

I recently had a failing disk replaced in my colo server. The server is running Centos 7.3. After the replacement, I was following these instructions to rebuild the RAID array that the disk was part of. https://help.1and1.co.uk/servers-c40665/dedicated-server-linux-c40577/rescu… Everything went fine until I reached the final section ("Grub Setup"). This section talks about running a command line program called "grub" to change the Grub configuration. And that program doesn't seem to be installed on this server. I admit that my knowledge of Grub is somewhat lacking. I know that Centos 7 uses Grub2 rather than the original Grub, but I don't know what replaced the "grub" command (or perhaps nothing replaced it and I just need to install a missing RPM). I am looking at cloud software. On Centos7-armv7hl, of course. I was pointed to Nextcloud, but v11 CAN work with php 5.4 in Centos7, but recommends at least 5.5 for security updates and performance (important on arm), but recommends php 7. Nextcloud 12 has a minimum requirement of php 5.6 (according to their install pages). So. What are others doing for: Cloud Php ??? I could always start with Fedora26, but want to stay with Centos if I can. thank you.

So, I've mentioned that I've got an original netbook, circa 2009, and I'm going to put CentOS on it. 32 bit. Not huge disk, old Atom processor, not tons of memory. Any recommendations for a light-weight window manager? Before I went to KDE, I used fvwm2, and all I'm going to do is use it to read webmail and browse, read news, etc, so I don't need a lot. mark

What RH-like on a Dell XPS 15 (9590)?

Hello there, I've just got a Dell XPS 15 (9590) at work and need to set up a stable GNU/Linux system on it. I thought of CentOS7, but.. obviously its kernel can't run on this hardware. What would you recommend? Waiting for CentOS8 is not an option unless it's a question of few weeks. Are there respins of the CentOS7 DVDs w/ more top-recent kernels? CentOS SDR Support

Several weeks ago, we posted a message seeking information about time sources. There were many helpful and educational responses. An excerpt from one of the responses is included below. We have been following up with regard to how SDR capabilities might be used for obtaining time using SDR dongles as well as using the time source product referenced in that response. Our SDR investigation has yielded many sources of information, but not a source dedicated to CentOS support for SDR products. Is there a CentOS subgroup and mail list directly involved with SDR device or system support? The SDR information resulting from our search has many references to ADS-B and the P3. It is almost like one absolutely must have a P3 to make use of SDR products. One thing that we did not find was any reference at all to SDR products and software for monitoring the frequencies used by recreational Remote Controlled Aircraft. Thanks again for all the helpful system time responses.

claiming unsused space back

Hi, I´m running a CentOS server in a VPS. Backups of the VPS take quite much space if I don´t claim unused space. Currently I´m using dd if=/dev/zero of=/mytempfile and remove that file to claim that unused space. Any automatic way of doing a similar thing in CentOS? I have googled for it but I have only found Debian commands. Thanks in advance! Miguel

list_add corruption problem

Howdy, I've got a CentOS 7 VM that occasionally becomes unresponsive. There's a "list_add corruption" entry in /var/log/messages, included below. This is on VMware. We have lots of other VMs which are running just fine. Only a few are CentOS 7 VMs, though, so I can't rule out some kind of environment issue. It's up-to-date on OS patches, and running kernel 3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64. When it locks up, there isn't any indication on its console, other than it looks like it's waiting at a login prompt. I did some Googling, which suggested similar issues have been around a while, but the results I found tended to be for CentOS 6 and older kernels. Can anyone help me understand what this means? Hello Guys, in the mean while i compiled and tested fallow http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/kernel/ Kernel 4.12.4, feels more stable as 4.12.0 (+ RadeonSI Flags) Drivers Libdrm 2.4.82, added a patch from git (intel and dri2) xorg-x11-drv-intel Added btrfs-progs 4.12. to my driver section, because fedora coopr doesn't compile i686 for centos. By the next release of intel drivers I rename back intel-vaapi-driver to be better backward compatible with other packages. Wine Update to wine-2.13 (Staging), allready tested with steam & WoW Mesa-Test I think that is the second time, when i try release candidate. But Why? Wanne know is is possible as i did it the last time: - Mesa 12.2.0-rc2 - against LLVM 5.0 RC1 And "Yes" :-) it do. After some simple refactoring LLVM 5.0 needs http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/drivers/ http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/llvm/ (because of cmake3.i686) Mesa Needs http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/drivers/ http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/mesa/ to compile, or you take my driver section and mesa-test as it is. Using GIMP on Centos-7, problem

Wondering if anyone here has ever tried installing this https://github.com/bootchk/resynthesizer as a gimp plugin in Centos-7, with gimp 2.8.16?? I find the installation instructions (for the binary tarball) are minimal and whatever I do, it doesn't seem to appear in the gimp menus, as it should. I've used an older version (0.14) from years ago in older versions of gimp, but how does one make this newer one work on C7? I also tried building the source, but even "autoconfig" spewed some errors that are greek to me, so I, for the moment, gave up on that. Advice will be appreciated, thanks in advance! Headphones volume control not working in CentOS 7

Hi all, I hope someone could enlighten me... How could I resolve the fact that the volume controls of all the headphones I try on CentOS 7 are not working, they are OK on CentOS 6 but impossible to make them work on my Thinkpad Laptop with an iPhone headphones or a Marshal Monitor plugged with a jack connector... I am trying to migratean existing RHEL 6 machine to Centos 6. I followed the instructions in https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/MigrationGuide I run into problems: when I run yum upgrade then yum tries to access a repository rhel-6-server-extras-rpms and then fails. What can I do that yum no longer tries to access this repository?

vncserver died

I get back from two weeks on the road, and try to VNC to my server and it fails. I ssh in and see that, yes vncserver is dead. I tried restarting it and see below for the failure messages plus my systemd setup. Actually, with C6, too. We've been fighting a problem with a server with a RAID appliance that's having issues. It's also serving /home/* and project directories for one team. What happens is when the issues happen, NFS on the other servers they use, of course, gags with timeouts. Now, my question is this: if we go to reboot one of the other servers where one or more home directories is being exported to, and is mounted by autofs, it hangs, and will *not* reboot, because it can't let go of the NFS-mounted directory, with the result that we have to physically go into the room and power cycle the box. Is there any way to configure NFS such that if a system is going down, NFS will wait a few minutes while it retries, then time out and let it reboot? mark

qemu-system-x86_64 does not support fw_cfg option

Hi I am trying to run CoreOS (Container Linux) as a guest OS using KVM/QEMU. One of their suggestions is to pass config info into the VM using the "fw_cfg" option . When I try this I get the error "-fw_cfg invalid option". If I run the vm with the help option it does not list the fw_cfg option. However, according to the qemu documentation, see here <https://qemu.weilnetz.de/doc/qemu-doc.html#Debug_002fExpert-options>, they support this option. The command used to run the vm is: /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -name CL-IGN-1 -m 1024 \ -net nic,vlan=0,model=virtio \ -net user,vlan=0,hostfwd=tcp::2222-:22,hostname=CL-IGN-1 \ -drive if=virtio,file=./coreos_production_qemu_image.img \ -fw_cfg name=opt/com.coreos/config,file=./CL-IGN-1.ignconfig qemu-system-x86_64: -fw_cfg: invalid option I also tried using /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm but got the same error. We are seeing high load developing over time on some machines that have dozens of user sessions. One common characteristic is that dbus-daemon uses near 100% cpu. Copying CentOS AMIs for EBS encryption

Hi, I am trying to copy the latest CentOS image to my own AWS account so that I can enable EBS volume encryption. It currently looks like the option when sharing the image is not enabled to allow direct copying of the snapshots, and I am wondering if this could be looked at? I can start an instance with this AMI, then create a new snapshot for the purpose of enabling EBS volume encryption, but I want to keep the image as clean as possible, and am worried if I run the image then some scripts will get ran that will customise the image with keys etc. If there is a better way to do this then happy to discuss. hi all, I have a question about upgrade squid 3.5.26. I was install squid 3.5.20 via yum in Centos 7, but now I need to upgrade squid 3.5.26 to test about the bug in delay_pools. But the least version of squid in Centos7 is 3.5.20. my question ~ Can I just download the package "squid-3.5.26.tar.gz" and config it ? but I'm flesh in linux I don't know how to ./configure. Slow Samba

Hello friends, I have a Gigabit network with few Windows and Centos 7 machines and I noticed that when copying files via Samba from: Windows to Windows I can copy files with speed of +- 120 MBps (I think this is the max speed gigabit network can provide) But when copying files from: Centos to Centos I get only speeds of about 40 MBps Windows to Centos 40 MBps Centos to Windows 40 MBps I tried to add these lines: use sendfile = yes socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY to smb.conf file but got no speed improvement, (so I think they dont need to be there, do they?) Please do you know what could be the issue? Is there some way to get full speed the network can provide? P.S.: I had the same issue on 100 mbps network - Win to Win could copy 12 MBps but Centos only 4 MBps. Thank you very much for your time Have a nice day

Hi, I have a vsftp server and two users for up and download. If user Alice uploads a file, the owner is set to Alice as expected "-rw-r--r-- alice ftpuploadgroup" Now Bob can login to the same folder and is able to rename the uploaded file. Bob can also rename an uploaded folder, but can't rename a file in that folder .... I'm confused, as I don't get why this is possible at all. Some vsftp magic? :) Can someone explain that to me? Hi, I'm currently experimenting with OpenVAS, the vulnerability scanner which was forked from Nessus. I'm reading through various HOWTOs and tutorials, and it seems like I'm stuck very early in my fiddling process. All the CentOS-based tutorials I've found mention a third-party Atomic repo, and here's how the installation usually begins. # wget -q -O - http://www.atomicorp.com/installers/atomic | sh Yet on my servers I have EPEL configured for my third-party needs, and OpenVAS already seems available through EPEL. # yum search openvas ... openvas-cli.x86_64 openvas-gsa.x86_64 openvas-libraries.x86_64 openvas-libraries-devel.x86_64 openvas-libraries-doc.x86_64 openvas-manager.x86_64 openvas-scanner.x86_64 The documentation I've found only mentions a single 'openvas' package, and I'm supposed to run 'openvas-setup' after installation. Now I tried to install the core packages found above, but there's no 'openvas-setup'. Any suggestions? TeX Live on CentOS 7

Hi, I just installed the OpenVAS vulnerability scanner on my CentOS 7 workstation. Everything seems to work fine, except PDF generation. The 'openvas-check-setup' script tells me that PDF generation works fine, but whenever I want to generate a report, the result is unusable and can't open in Evince or Okular. After googling a bit, I found out that several users complained that Tex Live is broken under RHEL/CentOS 7. While I did use LaTeX a long time ago to write documents, I don't use it anymore nowadays (just Markdown or LibreOffice). But I do need a working installation of TeX Live for OpenVAS PDF reports. What can I do now? Perform a manual installation of TeX Live with their provided installer (to /opt) and then blacklist all texlive* packages? I admit I'm a bit surprised that a distribution like RHEL/CentOS that prises quality wouldn't provide a working TeX Live in their package repositories. Any suggestions? getting rid of hp c3180

I have a hp photosmart C3180 all-in-one and am well and truly sick of it. It seems like every time I go on another printing binge, I need yet another print cartridge. hp-clean doesn't help. IIRC this use it or lose it "feature" is common to inkjets. What should I replace it with? If I want a non-cloggging printer, is laser jet the way I need to go? Hello Guys, our cluster runs till 2014 on supermicro board. It is not unusual that still mainboards with mga graphics cards are delivered. So I have then adjusted the mga driver from centos 6 - the specification file - , to be build on CentOS 7. Since then this runs on the headnode without failures. installer with centosplus kernel?

Hi all, Is there any way to get a CentOS 7 ISO with the centosplus kernel? I have some very old hardware I'd like to keep going if easy, but it has old NVidia network cards that need the forcedeth driver. Apparently this driver is now in the centosplus kernel, but if I use the default ISO I won't be able to get on the network to get the centosplus kernel. (Of course I can get the kernel to the machine in other ways, but over the network is by far the most convenient.) See https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=7359 for more details. Cron sending to root after changing MAILTO

I am running CentOS 7 on an outbound gateway server running Postfix. I have a couple of cron jobs I was expecting to see in my email that never showed up. It turns out that they were delivered to root, which is restricted on our exchange server, instead of the address I defined. Thanks to all offers free service to provide Centos. Why? After I had the BIOS for the laptop T440 & docking station had I had immediately after the first installation works, without any failures. Since I know how hard such a work is, I thank everyone in the community to make that possible. Without a stable base I can not perform my Linux tests. Since I often have the time micht Rolling releases like ArchLinux or every half year, I know at the latest after a year, a Fedora update to perform is CentOS exactly the correct. I do not need the GUI support as in OpenSuSE, because who comes times from the shell knows what I mean. Most cluster nodes in my work are computing machines with an average run time of 220 days, usually over a year before they need a reboot. When I think about my virtual Windows 10, which every week requires a restart. I had already more than 30 distros active in my hands, but none read so easily. Of course you can always improve something here and there and yet it comes on a good basis. Furthermore, I find the handling of rpm easily understandable. Small supplement to my repo: - I provide the packages of my work - They are not signed because I do not see you directly as an additional repository for everyone, rather than as an exponential fundus. - Each external repostory changes the basic system. - new dependencies to the packages. - Users also indirectly depend on it. - Repositories in the past have already led to a new split of the basis. Best example: Debian -> Ubuntu -> Linux Mint. I don't like that point at all. - The holder is bound, in a certain way, to the care and demand of the Community. - I definitely miss the time. Still fighting the IPv6 client dying...

Well, we're still fighting it, and one thing I've discovered that I find extremely odd: the IPv6 lease file. On my C7 workstation, if I grep -c lease6, I see 5 leases; on a C6 server, I see 9, and in the last few days, I saw my box - they mass restarted the IPv6 clients everywhere yesterday, because a good number of systems had lost the client. Can someone explain why there would be more than, say, 2 or 3 lease6's in the least file? mark

Installing support for Chinese text in Centos 7

I have just done a minimal installation of Centos7 followed by X Windows and the Mate desktop on a workstation. Although the default language is English, I would like to be able to write Chinese text in various applications. I seem to remember this was very easy to do in Centos 6 and Gnome: possibly only requiring only a simple 'yum groupinstall "Chinese Support"' after which I could use iBus to switch between languages. This does not seem to work in Centos 7. Suggestions? Thank you.

CentOS 7 + KDE: sleep mode?

Hi, One of my clients is running CentOS 7 + KDE 4.14 which I installed for her. Everything is running nicely. She asked me - more out of curiosity - if she could use the "Sleep" mode instead of "Shutdown" like she did when she ran Windows, so the PC would be up and running faster the next time. I didn't know what to answer, since I don't explicitly use this mode. Only on my laptop I simple shut the lid, which puts the laptop into Sleep mode. But on a normal PC, I don't know if this mode is supposed to be used. Any suggestions? Hello guys, recently I update my driver stack - Kernel up to 4.12.1 with additional flags for amd_si http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/kernel/ - Drivers http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/drivers/ xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.99.917-22.20170607 Xorg level 1.19 compiled againt the 1.17 server. rebuilt intel-vaapi-driver-1.8.2-1, because I need it for steam (test suite) https://negativo17.org/steam-for-centos-rhel-7/ http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/other/x86_64/steam-1.0.0.54-10.el7.i686.rpm Changed spec file becasuse of vaapi-intel ... - Mesa Update to 17.1.5 with LLVM (4.0.1) before with llvm 3.9.1 I think no improvements, followed the changelog in llvm. Built againt my drivers http://centos.cms4all.org/repo/7/mesa/ - WineHQ (fat rpm) wine-stage 2.11.2 (wine-stage + galium nine patch + steam network patch) Built against my drivers + mesa Everything tested on Laptop Lenovo T440 and 3770K + Radeon RX480 Packages are not singed. CentOS 7, NM, and IPv6

Hi, folks, I and the other admin here have just been assigned a mission... here's what's happening: only very recently - the last week? our CentOS 7 boxes, or at least some of them, will lose their IPv6 addresses, and not get it back. 1. We're running dibbler on the same box that serves DHCP. 2. It's been working for many months. 3. The lease file remains in place. 4. It appears to try, several times, and then give up - as our manager puts it, "I to renew the lease", "Here it is","Nope, don't like that, try again", and eventually, after 4 or 5 or so tries, gives up. One very show-stopping result of this is that NFS starts timing out. So: has anyone else seen this behaviour recently, and does anyone have some idea of what might be going on here? mark

Postfix fails after reboot

I am running CentOS 7 as an outbound gateway using Postfix, OpenDKIM, and SASLAuthd. The trouble is Postfix fails if OpenDKIM and SASLAuthd aren’t already running and I have to manually restart these services in order. Rsync Error: Centos Mirror

Hi, I have recently been receiving the following errors when using rsync to update my centos local repositories; rsync: send_files failed to open "/7/atomic/x86_64/repo/tmp/tmp.HBjcIF" (in centos): Permission denied (13) rsync: send_files failed to open "/7/atomic/x86_64/repo/tmp/tmp.SWIH0I" (in centos): Permission denied (13) I have checked and the user that runs the rsync script has all permissions to read and write into the destination folder (centos). I have just installed CentOS 6 i386 onto an old rack server (it's gonna be a Bacula storeage server and is a 1U 1/2 depth chassis) I did a minimum netinstall and so far so good. However, I have one problem. The CPU fan is going at full speed constantly. Not a real problem apart from (a) it will affect the fan's lifespan and (b) it's noisy. I've done some Googling and found some help. I've installed lm_sensors and run sensors-detect. After reboot I get the following: [root@harpo ~]# sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +40.0°C (crit = +75.0°C) [root@harpo ~]# which implies that it can read the CPU temp, but the fan is still going at full speed. Can anyone suggest what I need to do next to enable fan speed control? chkconfig madness CentOS 7

I have a couple of in use C7 boxes that were built with ntsysv and chkconfig for some old packages that needed to start using init.d. (The person setting these up didn't know about systemd creating service files for older packages, so we're stuck with these as-is. Here's my problem: Error unpacking rpm package chkconfig-1.7.2-1.el7.x86_64 error: unpacking of archive failed on file /etc/init.d: cpio: rename chkconfig-1.3.61-4.el7.x86_64 was supposed to be removed but is not! I can't update the entire system because of this boondoggle and I can't come up with a way to resolve this safely on a running system. WTH is going on, and why is this a problem? Hello, I was wondering if there is any plan to support an official image for the Microsoft Azure cloud platform? Currently there is a third party publisher "OpenLogic" providing an Centos image but I don't know who they are. Redhat is providing a RHEL 7.3 template and Canonical is providing Ubuntu. Problem with download from local mirror

Hello Dear I have lunched a local mirror but, I have a problem when I want to download package from it , I get this error when I run "yum update" failure: repodata/repomd.xml from base: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. http://centos.local/7/os/i386/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 4 04 - Not Found I do not Find out what is problem? I haved installed centos 7 as Client and want to download package from centos.local server and there is one another , I checked on another PC and get this error http://centos.local/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404 - Not Found Trying other mirror. I've just done a little "study" (well, nothing quite that pretentious) of the traffic hitting my router, that gets DROPped the router's firewall. there is a surprisingly (to me, at least) enormous amount of it. over about the last 3 weeks, it has dropped over 65,000 connection attempts. I finally got around to figuring out how to have the router's logging mechanism connect to the rsyslog on my Centos workstation, so I can collect a large body of log entries to review. previously I could see only a few hundred at a time, since the router doesn't have huge storage. Here's just the first few items from the list, listed as port number ordered by total number of hits: DPT=3343 8859 DPT=23 7872 DPT=3344 5984 DPT=6 4925 DPT=68 4291 DPT=9 2625 DPT=3291 2524 DPT=32915 2523 DPT=143 2467 DPT=1433 2377 DPT=445 2037 DPT=33441 1544 DPT=33442 1522 DPT=33440 1511 DPT=33434 1511 DPT=33435 1487 DPT=33436 1486 DPT=33437 1476 DPT=33439 1458 DPT=33438 1439 DPT=80 1068 DPT=33443 1060 DPT=5060 948 Some of those are ports I've never been aware of, such as 3343, which /etc/services lists as "ms-cluster-net". Obviously something on MS systems, and apparently a lot of mal-dudes think it's a great port to hit on, in case it might just happen to be wide open. then there's port 23 (telnet) which at 7872 hits is ample evidence for why everybody who knows anything says to NEVER put a system on the internet with an open telnet port. sigh. Then, even after all this garbage is filtered out, there is another HUGE pile of things hitting my mail server that get filtered out by a variety of filtering techniques including but not limited to greylisting email. (BTW, greylisting was by far the most effective of all the filtering techniques I've found for dropping spam before it ever gets into my mail system. For mail that does get in, SpamBayes works great, once one figures out how to configure it.) If any of you don't believe that the 'net is populated by evil beings, let this be a lesson to ye! System Start-Up Issue

We run several Intel-based CentOS machines. They are all at 6.9 or 7.x. One of each OS is Oracle VirtualBox hosted on an up to date Windows 7 system. We use these virtual machines for checkout of new applications before they are loaded on native CentOS platforms. Regular weekly updates are run on all of our CentOS machines. I went on vacation right after an update to one of our virtual CentOS 6.9 systems so it was not restarted for a period of time. Now it will not complete boot-up with the gnome display never fully launched. A progress bar at the bottom of the start-up screen never reaches completion. We have not been able to detect a running system on the network. Two options for stopping the CentOS 6.9 virtual machine have been tried. One is to "power off" and the other is to "send the shutdown message". Both of these options appear to work properly. The shutdown output scrolls by very fast but it looks reasonable and the virtual machine eventually closes. We have also tried suspending boot-up and selecting two previous working kernels. This yields the same result of an incomplete start up. Shutdown of these old kernel systems appears the same as shutdown of the newest kernel. However, we have not been able to determine from any of the shutdown sequences exactly how much of the system was actually running. Having very little experience with such start-up issues, we are at a loss to determine how to salvage the CentOS 6.9 virtual machine. Is there a standard way to start up a system without any extras like gnome to see if we can get a running system? Would it be wise to attempt using yum update after we get a running system to see if issues are corrected? Thanks.

Differences in CentOS and RHEL systems

Hi, I was looking at the differences between the CentOS and RHEL systems, found that tuned profile is different for these OSes. I have gone through RHEL 7 Performance Tuning Guide to see if there are more such changes, sysctl settings change which are due to tuned profile and did not find any other differences Also took diff of /etc/* config files on RHEL and CentOS installed systems, there are RHEL subscription and bugzilla references which vary So, are there more such system wide differences on CentOS? CentOS 7.3 and e1000e

Hi All - I have a box running the above. Power was lost long enough that UPS did not work. When power came back on the C7 box boots way faster than the switch and resulted in no network. power cycling the C7 box resulted in network. This even happened a second time. The only way to get the box back was to power cycle. the box is remote and no keyboard and mouse connected. Any thoughts on why the e1000e would not talk to the switch ? The switch is an unmanaged linksys - could not get the model. It auto negotiates to 1G/full. Thanks, for any thoughts. Jerry

Hardening Apache on CentOS 7

Hi, Some time ago one of my public servers (running Slackware64 14.0) got attacked and was misused to send phishing emails. This misadventure made me more concerned about security, so I spent the last few weeks catching up on security, reading docs about SELinux and how to use it, etc. I have a public sandbox server running CentOS 7, and I'm currently experimenting quite a lot with Apache and how to secure it. My approach is very much trial-and-error. performance problems with OpenLDAP and multiple simultaneous clients

Running CentOS7, with openldap-2.4.40-13.el7. The environment consists of two ldap providers, in mirror mode, serving over a shared virtual IP. Client-facing services are provided by 4 consumers, most of which are accessed over a layer 4 load balancer. Periodically, the consumers encounter some sort of client request(s) which consume all available threads, cause backload threads to spike, and cause slapd to go unresponsive for a long period of time. I've no idea what is causing these events, or if there is anything in the configurations that I can tweak to help. Anyone have any ideas?

Apache + mod_evasive : problem with test.pl

Hi, I'm currently experimenting with the mod_evasive module for Apache, to protect the server against potential DoS attacks. Here's what I did so far. # yum install mod_evasive Don't touch mod_evasive's default configuration, just restart Apache. # systemctl restart httpd The package includes a test.pl script supposed to launch a testing DoS attack. Unfortunately this script doesn't seem to work as expected. Here's the only response I get: # perl test.pl HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request ... mdraid doesn't allow creation: device or resource busy

Dear fellow CentOS users, I have never experienced this problem with hard disk management before and cannot explain it to myself on any rational basis. The setup: I have a workstation for testing, running latest CentOS 7.3 AMD64. I am evaluating oVirt and a storage-ha as part of my bachelors thesis. I have already been running a RAID1 (mdraid, lvm2) for the system and some oVirt 4.1 testing. Now I added 6x 500 GB platters from an old server running Debian 8 Jessie with software RAID of a similar fashion as well. That would unexpectably prevent the system from booting past something like (I copied it from the working setup), I ran it over night, so it was actually about 16 hours: "A start job is running for dev-mapper-vg0\x2droot.device (13s / 1min 30s)" Can it be just some kind of a scan, which takes so long? The current throughput based on time (16 h) and capacity (3 TB) would be about 50 MBps. (Those drives can be pretty slow when writing, dd showed about 30 MBps, the write cache is off.) This is actually repeatable. If I unplug those drives and boot again, it all works. I don't know, if it helps but before that I had two screens full of: "dracut-initqueue[331]: Warning: dracut-initqueue timeout - starting timeout scripts" Well, I proceded without this array, and after it booted I connected the array of 6 hard disks again. They were recognized etc. The problem is, I cannot do much. I can dd from and to the harddrives, I can create and delete partitions but I cannot create an md raid array out of them, I cannot create a physical volume or format them with a filesystem. I even tried overwriting all of those harddrives with zeroes, which worked but didn't help at all with the creation of the array afterwards. mdadm --create /dev/md6 --level=5 --raid-devices=6 /dev/sd[cdefgh]1 "mdadm: cannot open /dev/sdc1: Device or resource busy" with pvcreate, it seems as if there was no device, but I clearly see it in /dev/sdc1... "Device /dev/sdc1 not found (or ignored by filtering)." partprobe yields: "device-mapper: remove ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1 failed: Device or resource busy Warning: parted was unable to re-read the partition table on /dev/mapper/ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY (Device or resource busy). This means Linux won't know anything about the modifications you made. device-mapper: create ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1part1-mpath- ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY failed: Device or resource busy device-mapper: remove ioctl on ST3500630NS_9QG0P0PY1 failed: Device or resource busy" In some forums, it was suggested, dmraid (yes, the old) could be the trouble. I eliminated this hypothesis (overwritten all with zeroes, fakeraid was never present with these disks). Also multipathd/ dm_multipath could be the trouble, someone suggested. The problem is, if I was to remove device-mapper-multipath, I would loose oVirt-engine, because it has multipath as dependency for some reason. Do you have any ideas? What logs/ information should I provide if you want to have a look into this. Best regards Adam Kalisz

Extreme frustration with GIMP

I am not a graphics person. Also can't afford to hire one. Trying to follow instructions at https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tutorial-quickie-separate.html I use the "intelligent scissors" just like they say, spend quite a bit of effort doing so. Then click the foreground select tool - just like they say - and suddenly everything I did with the intelligent tool is undone. WTF? Does anyone know of an actual GIMP tutorial for removing background that doesn't cause me to throw a damn brick through my monitor? Photoshop makes it easy, but clearly GIMP developers have a completely different philosophy on how a graphics tool should work and I can't figure out what their philosophy is.

Web server files ownership?

Hi, I have a series of websites hosted on two CentOS 7 servers, using Apache virtual hosts. One of these servers is a "sandbox" machine, to test things and to fiddle around. C7 and spoofed MAC address

Got a problem: a user's workstation froze. He wound up rebooting, without calling me in first, so I dunno. But, and this is a show-stopper, when it came up, it came up with the firmware MAC, not the spoofed one. In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcg-eth0, I've got the spoofed MAC address, and a UUID. In the grub.conf, I've got net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0. But when I logged onto his machine, ip a showed eth0... but with the firmware MAC. And I'm wondering if it went to renew its IP address, and lost the spoofed MAC. That might explain his freezes. Anyway, does anyone have any idea if there's some networkmangler or systemd configuration that would force it to pay attention? Note that my hack to fix it was ifdown eth0/ifup eth0, and it's fine. mark

ntsysv and chkconfig update error

We have a couple of CentOS 7 boxes that were built before I was hired to clean up the kickstart script used for C7 boxes. We had a couple of rpm packages that were pre-C7 that were used and setup the old SysV Init way using ntsysv and chkconfig on these boxes. (I finally fixed that in the newer scripts.) These are out in the field and I'm having to deal with them as they are. My interface settings like this: *for ens33 NIC -> ifcfg-ens33* DEVICE=ens33 BOOTPROTO=none ONBOOT=yes PREFIX=24 IPADDR=192.168.2.151 *and for VIP NIC ens33:2* * -> ifcfg-ens33:2* DEVICE=ens33:2 ONBOOT=no ONPARENT=no PREFIX=24 IPADDR=192.168.2.149 i made up ifcfg-ens33:2 from ifcfg-ens33 by copying it... i dont know where i do wrong?? i am waiting for your help... best regards....

SCL python3 and supervisor

Hi all Is there a possibility to run python3 application (python taken from SCL) under supervisor? I already have one python2 application, and want to add python3 (it's Django app if that matters). A was trying to add LD_LIBRARY_PATH as taken from "enable" script, but it doesn't seems to work (in log i have still python 2.7.5). Is it possible? -- Marcin Trendota
